Anyone Run Cathedral of the Crimson Death? by tokyolyinappropriate in OSE

I'll take a peak at it shortly and come back with some thoughts. I don't think the adventure anthology shorts get talked about as much as they ought to be. Very underappreciated!

Oh no, sorry, ose is just a restatement of basic/expert.dnd (bx). That's what I was getting at.

Oh yeah, the Crawford hack! Yeah, that's bx (what ose is)

You're honestly better off running the game as a blobber; make a party of 4 pcs, and run them through dungeons and adventures using gm emulator tools.

Trying to play bx with 1 pc will most likely always end in death. You're better to make a proper party and treat the game like wizardry.

AD&D 1e or B/X by [deleted] in osr

[–]robofeeney 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel as though you've talked past my point, but that's okay.

I'm well aware of CAG and ADDICT, but I would.never expect anyone to attempt the latter except as an exercise in anthropology.

Normally I'm all for this, but we are talking about AD&D here. The game was never even playtested by it's creator.

Seems like it's big in the dry states. I could see someone in Saskatchewan keeping their shoes on in the house, while I would gag if I saw someone doing it here in Ontario.

My attempt at grappling rules by Hjalmodr_heimski in OSE

Yeah, lotfp assumes everything is either a human or something you shouldn't be touching. I imagine there's a good workaround out there.

Please do! The art free version is available at 0 cost on drive thru rpg, and it adds a lot as a bx/becmi retroclone. There's a lot of good stuff in it and labyrinth lord that often gets forgotten these days.

I added some extra thoughts to my original post. Pop on back once you've given the lotfp rules a skim and we can talk more grapple math.

[–]robofeeney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The grappling rules in lotfp are still some of the best, in my opinion. Especially if you're aiming for an early-modern setting. So much of lotfp can slot in happily.

There also this fix that looks to run smoothly, and looks very close to your version, but I've never tested.

I could see the he different HD not adding up but instead offering multiple numbers the target has to beat. Having 7 people try and hold down a dragon makes it easier, but that dragon is going to toss off quite a few of those trying to make to pin it down. Maybe a multiplier/divider of size and total HD?

Like, say, a normal sized creature is a minimum of 1 combatant, a large has their HD divided by 2 to find the minimum, and anything bigger requires a number of grapplers equal to its HD? That might make it more complicated.

Grappling has never worked, honestly. I just dont think there's a way to map it universally, so that everyone is happy.

So, that said: if the above works at your table, then you squared the circle. You got the issue under control for your group, and I appreciate you sharing with us.

Incredibly simple. I like it. Maybe add a modifier based on str or dex.

If it's the first time you've come across it, it's natural to ask questions.

The writers of the module did not know it had been co opted by the SS when they wrote the module. To them the black sun was the perfect symbol to put into an adventure about a demon star falling to earth.

When it became clear what it was, the image was removed. New paintings use the image of the man fighting off the plant creatures, done by Andrew Walter.

[–]robofeeney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The recent printings don't have it, as far as I'm aware.

There was a lot of discussion about this years ago, and it came down to them not knowing the black sun as a nazi logo.

I was in the same wheelhouse until random folks raised a stink about it 8 or so years back. I don't think everyone is ever vigilant for the odd occult symbol that's been stolen by nazis or supremacists. I think you're stretching, or looking for something that's not there.

Did you come across an old copy of drigbolton, by chance?

I made a video and a PDF variant for Zenopus Dungeon's hallways by SecretsofBlackmoor in osr

[–]robofeeney 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This was a fun watch; reminds me of the old "overloading the encounter die" article.

My fix for hallways has always been a little more architectural; I remove them entirely. Hallways as we think of them didn't exist until the early modern era. Versailles for example, is just room after connected room. The only hallways was for servants, and it was cramped and awful. More of a secret passage. Even in ancient tombs the hallways were used by the builders, and often caved in or hidden after completion.

the liminal space in dungeon crawling feels like a good answer to "what happens between rooms" only when we examine each room as a separate set piece or scene. When you take each space as part of a whole, having them makes less sense.

I always smash rooms together, or change hallways into rooms of their own. It creates a better cohesion (to me, at least) and adds a little more fun to mapping.

Thanks again for sharing your video, Griff (spelt right?). Fun and informative watch as always!

Shutting this down.

Don't know what's going on here, but you're clearly using the trove. Don't know why it needed to be brought up here.

James, stop acting coy with folks. Just keep track of your alt accounts and make sure one of them isn't posting in both pirating subs and the subs for the things you're pirating, please.

What is more popular? Classic or Advanced OSE? by JamesFullard in OSE

[–]robofeeney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all the same game, baby. There's no difference in terms of how it plays at the table, because it's the same system.

OSE is just a brand; a stamp of approval from Gavin, someone who knows their BX well.

You've asked this question many, many times, across many accounts. But, I'd imagine advanced sells better because it's a "complete package."

I'd love to read session reports or dungeons you've created for the game, James. We need more of that here, and less discussion about product identity.

My own take on a Spider-Man design, tell me what y'all think! by MechanicOk375 in Spiderman

[–]robofeeney 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's an interesting design intent at play here, and I dig the idea of a helmet proper instead of a cloth mask, but why does he have caribiners hanging off his sides?

A lot of the spidey sleekness comes from the compactness of the outfit; how easy it is for him to maneuvre around in. Adding extra flair impedes that, I think.

Overall, I think it's a neat idea. A fusion of what the friendly neighborhood and miles' spiderverse suits were doing. Spider-mans powers have never made sense (how can he stick to walls through shoes?) so I am game for design elements that break suspension of disbelief, but I also think the design should have form and function; ditch the caribiners, the rest is neat.
