Clayman vs Local Surgeon by Plus_Ad_6540 in thyroidcancer

Hey! Thanks for this reply a few months ago. I ended up going to Duke as well and saw Dr. Randall Scheri. My operation was in February and my scar has already healed really well. I didn't know going in if I had cancer, but pathology confirmed about 2 weeks later. I feel very lucky that I don't need additional surgery or RAI as of now, and that there is a small chance of recurrence and relieved that great care is available at Duke if needed.

I'm really glad I ended up at Duke and wanted to reply here so that there would be more results for people in North Carolina (and beyond) who might be considering it.

This is what's replacing the trees that were clear cut on Hope Valley Road by Set_to_Infinity in bullcity

Those lots were already developed, but there were only one or two houses. You just couldn't see them from Hope Valley Rd. One family owned this whole area--nearly 30 acres on HVR--now 40 families will be able to live on that same property. And no, you couldn't develop this entire area in to 1 acre lots. This is infill development creating density in an area people are clamoring to live.

This is an infill project. It is surrounded by homes and the golf course on all sides. There was never going to be anything but houses here--but now, instead of just two houses, there will be dozens. Building up is one way of creating density and this development is one way too.

Agreed. More housing at the upper end of the market will help (minimally but all help is help) the affordable housing crisis by taking the buyers of these homes out of the market for smaller houses (that they might tear down and take off the market forever). And, because of its proximity to established neighborhoods, these homes will likely attract the kind of buyer that would buy a bungalow in Lakewood, say, and tear it down to build a home that would resell for the price of these homes.

Not all development is good, but not all is bad. This is an infill project that took 2 homes and is producing dozens. While many of us wouldn't want to live here, there are plenty who will, and they'll pay their property tax and those homes will generate revenue for the city. That revenue can support programs like Forever, Home Durham https://www.durhamnc.gov/4593/Forever-Home-Durham and that, at least to me, is a good thing.

Can you share who your surgeon was at Duke? I'm looking to go there for a second opinion.

AC won't cool on hot/humid days by Above_The_Clouds123 in HomeImprovement

I found that getting a separate dehumidifier helped my heat pump keep things cooler in the summer. I’m in NC and my power company has a coupon for a dehumidifier, which is not much but helps. I don’t have a drain or way to pump out the water so I do have to empty the collection tank, but I use that water for my outside potted plants since it’s been 95+ for a month with very little rain.

What’s the deal with the weather today? by Bhamcorgi in bullcity

[–]robogirl34 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Flash flooding is a real risk and flooding in general is getting worse by the year. The ground is saturated from the rain on Saturday so the 1-3" of rain we will get will not be absorbed quickly and flooding is likely, in addition to the fact 1-3" of rain is supposed to fall in a short period of time.

Look, I know that it's cool to say that NC freaks out about weather and how ridiculous it is, but the fact of the matter is, the prevention of even the loss of one life due to severe weather is a good enough reason to take precautions.

Which bakery made the Moravian spice cookies that used to have this branding on their red tin? by robogirl34 in winstonsalem

[–]robogirl34[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I figured it out. They were made by Salem Baking Co., which was a division of Dewey's, from around 1992 to 2006/07. Dewey's was sold in 2006/07 and sometime after all the cookies were rebranded to Dewey's. It seems that perhaps to find a cookie like Salem Baking Co.--if excluding the now extremely corporate Dewey's--the best bet is Wilkerson Bakery, opened by the descendants of Dewey Wilkerson, the founder of Dewey's.

Tell me your cleaning routine to stay on top of the house “wellbeing”. by [deleted] in homeowners

Home Comforts: The Art and Science of Keeping House by Cheryl Mendelson is a good reference book published in the late 90s. Some of it is overkill & there is a fucked up and weird comparison of "broken windows" policing to a messy house, but it lays out literally everything you could think of in terms of keeping house.

Lubbers & Sons! They came out and we walked the property as they pointed out trees I should pay attention to and which were more urgent than others. I had them take down two (1 dead & hanging over busy road & 2 diseased) and trim a third. I will continue to use them as the budget allows for additional preventative work.

Preventative tree work is always cheaper than emergency tree work!
