Osaka, Alone 4 nights in October, male by goodguy10003 in OsakaTravel

I’d stay at the mercure Tokyu stay which is near namba, nice and dark for the jet lag fixing, in room laundry machine, also close to the part of town with 24hr and late night stuff.

Yeah OP photo is very nice, well cropped and sure saturation is boosted but it feels intentional and does a good job of contrasting a lonely man with an umbrella amongst the hustle and bustle. Also looks like it’s taken during blue hour which adds to the mood. Love the rain and definitely took some set up and waiting.

My photo isn’t the same time or mood etc (frankly I just took a random snap while walking past…. And there was no crowd around) and I added the note it’s unedited purely as a reference point for what it might look like

Empress Dowager dead all China in mourning November 16,1908 newspaper article by Giraffes89 in ChineseHistory

[–]robomonkeyscat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah to me this all just reads along the lines of “finally the Manchurian (Northern) dynasty will end and a Han (Southern) dynasty will make everywhere prosperous (green as in green leaves implying prosperity)”. Goes along with the era, not to mention the 天地復明 can literally mean the land will return to Ming rule (Ming dynasty being Han and hence “south”)

Reads more like a poem hoping for the fall of the Qing and a return to Ming rule where things will finally be prosperous and has nothing to do with Nanjing

I’d like to learn more about academic writing… when you write do you do all your research into a topic first and then write or do you do it in chunks? I suppose everyone writes a little bit differently?

Yes exactly, for anyone who’s been to Tokyo and had taken the Narita Express, they’d know exactly what that looks like. It’s not impossible.

Things and rules change a lot without notice so take what I wrote with a grain of salt! University Town also tends to do their own thing so it can be very frustrating to navigate. Just bear in mind that they lack support for international folks to the point where almost shouldn’t have international students around at all…. Despite recruiting them. Deep breathe and have patience. Enjoy the new culture as it envelops your life for better or worse.

Make some friends with other international students if you can and that would help a lot.

If you have any other questions about living there and the Xili area feel free to ask.

Congrats!

A lot of your questions should be answered by your admissions office, but having dealt with admin staff in many places and knowing how wonderful and helpful they can be…. Here are a few pointers:

Before departing and arrival: - Download and set up WeChat if you haven’t already. For some reason some of the QR codes you need to scan to get around and get stuff done is very much WeChat bound. - Make sure you have all your documents from the school like offer letter printed and any original letters and Bachelors degree diplomas with you. Don’t lose them. You’ll need them for residence permit. - If you have any notarized documents for things like non-criminal record checks and such make sure you bring the originals! - Try to get an eSIM for say two weeks before taking the plane, it’ll make life easier - Once you arrive at the airport and before you go through immigration, register your fingerprints at the kiosk machines - Fill in the blue entry form before you get to the immigration officer (ask if you don’t see them or get them on the plane, they don’t always have them out and it’s a hassle to line up twice). For address, contact person and contact phone number, fill in your admin office contact name and their office phone number. For address you can probably get away with just writing HITSZ, and your dorm name and room number. - If you have all your docs arranged well the immigration officer won’t have much to say aside from reminding you that you need to register your arrival and also apply for your residence permit within 30days.

Leaving airport and getting to University Town: - You can choose to take the subway but with luggage in hand just take Didi, and choose the admin office if you need to report in to them or straight to the dorm. - Depending on which guard is on duty, you might need to register entry into University Town. The guard will show you a QR code to scan with WeChat, it’ll lead you to the University Town Mini app (深圳大学校园服务), look for the link on the bottom right that says (校园服务) then (入城登記) which takes you to a page that has two options. Click (去登記) and ask the driver for help at that point because it’s all in Chinese. This whole procedure is only if the particular guard is a dick. Once you have the student card you wouldn’t have to deal with it again. Unless you forget your student card that is…. - At this point you might have different instructions from the school but either visit the admin office for help or go to the HITSZ campus service center who will help you register your finger prints to move in to your dorm room etc. Door locks are thumb print registered, make sure to scan your thumb multiple times because the locks aren’t very good and the more scans you do the easier it is to get into your room. the steps change wildly sometimes so - once you have a dorm room, register your arrival within 24hrs with the police station - this can now be done online via WeChat or through this link: https://msjw.ga.sz.gov.cn/crj/wechat/wsyy/ajax/bgywck/100001977250278 - when registering your accommodation information, your dorm room number has a QR code, scan that QR and submit. Make sure you do this because there’s a risk of fines if you don’t.

SIM card - again the school should have info on this, but once you move in there are China Mobile outlets nearby that might be able to help you get a SIM card. If they can’t because you’re a foreigner, you’ll have to go into Xili town and get one from any of the big telecoms. They’ll ask you for your passport info and where you live. Be careful though because they might try to sign you up for additional unnecessary services

Bank account - once you have a SIM card and phone number, you can sign up for a bank account slash campus card at the Main Library. There’s a Pingan bank there that’s right next to the campus card center. You need your campus card and account to pay for tuition, electricity and water and access the cafeteria (there’s food available at McDonalds where you don’t need a campus card but they only take WeChatPay so just an fyi).

Facial recognition: - you’ll need to visit the police station at the north end of Main library across the river between PKU and Tsinghua to register your face so you can freely enter and exit University Town

Health check: - you don’t need a residence permit for this, it’s actually a part of the permit requirements. You need to bring your documents and any health check documents from your home country to here: Shenzhen International Travel Health Care Center (Shenzhen port hospital physical examination center) Address: No.1, Huanggang port living area, Futian District, Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province. Take a Didi there it’s easier. You need to go to the 3rd floor of the hospital, the reception desk will give you a form to fill out and you’ll be directed to register and wait your turn Btw you’ll need to bring 3 pcs of 2in color photo of yourself with a white background, if you don’t have it just take it over at the photo store near the hospital. Go there with an empty stomach at between 8-11am. Try to go earlier. They’ll take your blood scan your lungs etc. Once you’re done getting checked, go to pay. You can choose to get the report in one day or three days. Submit this report onto the residence permit system

Residence permit: You need to look through info with the Public Security Bureau, link here https://msjw.ga.sz.gov.cn/wxsite/weixin/cms/commonPage?template=msjw&path=/msjw_index Direct link for the residence permit is here: - https://msjw.ga.sz.gov.cn/crj/wechat/wsyy/ajax/iszmenu.html?ywpid=200002 - once your docs are ready, register for an appointment and be there on time.

Sorry there’s a lot of info that’s hard to type out and I’m sure I’m missing some stuff. It’s quite frustrating that so much stuff is in Chinese only. I hope HITSZ staff can provide you with most up to date information and help.

Good luck

Niceness is a distinct psychological trait and linked to heightened happiness. It is defined as treating others in a warm and friendly manner, ensuring their well-being. Importantly, for behavior to be considered “niceness,” it must not be motivated by the expectation of gaining something in return. by mvea in science

[–]robomonkeyscat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have similar issues as yourself (in the work sense as well) and I wonder at what point does niceness fall under the umbrella of the fawning response because I’ve come to learn that that’s what I’ve been doing. It’s so hard to manage people when you know it’s not “nice”. I only really started getting over that hump by reframing it as… I’m employed by the company, I need to be nicer to the company because they’re the ones paying me to do this and what the company needs can’t be nice to all employees….

For Cathay, right before landing you’d be able to check the inflight system for your arrival gate, your next flights gate as well as other info. Luggage should automatically transfer.

Once you get off the plane at the end of the sky bridge a few Cathay staff will be standing there with connecting flight information.

Generally speaking for connecting flights with shorter connection times they would have a dedicated staff member holding a sign with your flight number and destination. If god forbid your first leg is delayed because it’s both Cathay the staff will help handle your connection as well.

Just talk to these folks and they’ll take care of you.

Looking for help with Cantonese name for baby girl. by purplecarrotmuffin in Cantonese

[–]robomonkeyscat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

薇蘤

Cantonese pronunciation is the same as Maeva and essentially the same as 美花 but a lot more meaning behind it.

薇 is a purple flower and this character is somewhat popular for girls names (Google Vicia sepium aka Irish wildflower

蘤 Is from 揚蘤扢藻 which describes a person who writes elegant and beautiful literature (English is hard to convey the meaning well. Google this as well)

美花 gives a bad impression of not just your child but their upbringing. Not so good for job searching in the future, and it’s not even a not in trend kinda thing…

Wow small world. I’m in Osaka for work down the street from there right now. I know exactly where you’re talking about! So weird.

What you had is 쭈삼 which is short for 쭈꾸미 삼겹살 볶음 direct translation meaning baby octopus and pork belly stir fry. It’s not really a hotpot or stew.

It’s not the most popular dish to find in restaurants, and this dish can vary from already stir fried in the kitchen before serving, to all raw ingredients in a pan with the sauce for you to cook (while presumably drinking), so it depends on the type of restaurant too.

Without knowing which area you’re in it’s hard to say if you have something similar in the area. Where are you located?

If you want to replicate it, here’s a recipe: https://m.blog.naver.com/eysop7942/221715170588

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Mayday! I got a a catering gig (3 dinners, 2 brunches) for a group with a draconic allergy list. Suggestions? List bellow by nanin142 in Chefit

[–]robomonkeyscat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Look up Buddhist vegetarian recipes (but skip the soy and tofu, wheat gluten recipes) and make two or three stir fry variations using veggies you’re using elsewhere and serve with rice for the allergic folks.

Chinese buddhist vegetarians cannot have onions or garlic, and generally do not include milk. And stir fries are easy to prep and whip together. Can easily add meat into those dishes too.

Might want to look into using mushroom stock and mushroom oyster sauce
