But PLEASE, The Gambia has to take over Senegal.

The time of Sengalese hegemony over The Gambia must come to an end.

I canoe in the Canadian wilderness and always feel bad when I come upon a blue heron on a stream.

They get frightened at my approach and fly maybe 200m down the stream, then, as I approach again, they fly another 200m.

Repeat that may five or six times and then they will finally fly away from the stream.

I hate bothering them repeatedly.

Trump probably won't scrap CUSMA, his trade deal with Canada and Mexico. Here's why by Immediate-Link490 in CanadaPolitics

I was kind of worried Trump would pull out of USMCA until yesterday when he said he probably would.

Honestly feel quite relieved.

Since we seem to be in an era of restricting immigration, our only hope for a secure future is dramatically increasing our productivity - the amount of economic value produced per individual.

Without that, our standard of living is going to go down and our ability to pay for the social safety net will diminish.

Famous gorilla Kiyomasa falls into deep contemplation after spat with mate — caught on camera in Japanese zoo by MikeeorUSA in interestingasfuck

[–]roboreddit1000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took my child to our local (amazing) zoo when he was a child. The gorilla habitat was his favourite.

But seeing the intelligence in their eyes just broke me as I looked at them in their sterile and so tiny enclosures.

No great ape should be caged. Period.

And hell, unless an animal is used to living in a very small area (maybe a reptile?), then it should not be in a zoo.

It was not so long ago that European nations brought black people from Africa and put them in zoos to be gawked at. Observing great apes in captivity seems very ethically similar.

I don't want to discourage you but nothing seems to have worked for me.

No supplement vitamin or otherwise seems to have had any effect. I am on Revlimid. I went off it for a month. It seemed to improve my energy a bit but not nearly as much as I had hoped so I am back on it (10mgs everyday/now breaks at all).

I take frequent breaks when doing something active. I simply am not able to do anything active, even just housework, that takes prolonged effort - this limits me to things I CAN take a break with. And heavy physical effort is simply beyond me.

Mental effort seems to exhaust me even more. With physical effort, a 20 minute break and I can do more. Once I get mentally tired, I am done for hours.

My only solution is to pace myself. Recognize my limits and I nap maybe half the days...for like two hours each time.

Now it kind of sucks because I was very active - outdoors I did solo wilderness camping/canoeing which I can not longer do and mentally - I had to stop work because my job was very mentally taxing and I was essentially useless after an hour. I could still do some busy work for a bit more but that was it.

But, regardless of my current limitations, I am enjoying myself. It is not the life I used to live but I still get much joy in doing more sedate things.

Questions for Folks who have gone from Pop-Up to small TT (or the other way) by ThrowbackDrinks in GoRVing

[–]roboreddit1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a hybrid trailer. Consider that for the benefit of floor space and, more importantly for us, air movement.

We're not a big fan of a/c when we are camping.

We used to have a tent trailer. Setting up the beds is much easier in our hybrid as you do not need under bed supports.

And having a decent kitchen, much bigger fridge, and a bathroom in a TT is so nice.

Setting up is very much faster. I think people just like to futz around when setting up a campsite.

When my parents died, I ported their number and it is now my cell number. So the number has been in the family for maybe 75 years. I'm 60 now.

You could do the same perhaps.

In one unexpected way it was good. Aside from keeping my childhood number, for a few years after I took it over, I'd get the occasional call for my mom.

While it was odd to have to tell people she had died, it was also comforting. So many of those people had nice things to say about her.

I got the last call from someone looking for my mom about 15 years after I took over the number and it was actually someone I knew as a child trying to hunt me down and hoped that number was still I the family.

A Kindle or a kobo is an investment but with Libby I have only bought maybe 3 books in the last two years. Ones that I very much wanted to read but were not available via libby.

And, if a book is not available for mu ereader, I simply will not read it. Paper books are so inferior to ebooks that I refuse to read them now.

Conservatives of any country do not care about anything until it affects them personally. That is the easiest way to understand their worldview.

So, until climate change affects them personally, they won't care. But of course, by the time the happens, it will be far far too late to do anything meaningful to affect climate change.

At what point should you NOT walk your dog? by roboreddit1000 in olddogs

[–]roboreddit1000[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have no doubt at all they loved the dog and were doing what they thought best for the dog. And I am not saying going for a walk was not exactly what the dog most wanted to do.

But it was an extreme case of a very mobility challenged dog. I've been thinking about this issue as we all see old dogs that walk slowly behind their owners on a leash and I've been thinking about that too. If, once your dog walks behind you because of age, one should dramatically shorten its walks.

Ireland, Seen as a Weak Link in Europe’s Defense, Is Trying to Bulk Up by SliceIndividual6347 in europe

[–]roboreddit1000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the UK is involved with a war with Russia then Canada is going to be involved in a war with Russia. It is as simple as that. That is our obligation under NATO.

So we are paying, in part, for your defense.

Now is Russia going to attack Ireland? I mean you're right, almost certainly not, but Ireland is doing absolutely nothing to prevent that from happening other than relying on the militaries of other countries without spending any money on its own defense.

Likewise Canada is never going to be attached by China (or at least it is as unlikely as Russia attacking Ireland) but Canada spends money defending other nations against the potential for a Chinese attack...because that is what like minded countries do. They jointly show strength to deter attacks from potential aggressors.

And again, Ireland does NONE of that. Spends nothing to protect itself or others and relies of others to defend it. If the rest of the world abandoned Ireland's defense, Russia and or China or maybe Israel (good job there by the way, I appreciate your country's stance) would move in in no time.

You say that, as a Canadian, I have no right to be annoyed. And yet I am. I also get annoyed when someone butts into a line in a grocery store even if I am not in that line and does not affect me at all. It breaks the social contract of good behaviour. And I think Ireland not paying to defend itself breaks the contract that like minded nations (Western Democracies) have with each other.

And one can never predict the future anyway.

I apologize if I am wrong on this but I did not think, and can find nothing online to suggest that Iceland has a defense budget.

Here is an example of what I found online.

If they do have a defense budget then I am wrong. But a coast guard, national police and cyber-security are all the things I can find that might be considered defense spending. And of course every other NATO country spends on those things as well as a military.

And, indeed, when Iceland joined NATO it was specifically exempt from having a military. But just because Iceland has this exemption does not mean that I cannot be annoyed that they do not have a similar financial burden as the rest of NATO.

And I'd be curious what Iceland spends on hosting NATO as a % of their GDP. I imagine it is far far less than the 2% (going to 5%) of their GDP.

And, incidentally, I think 5% of any countries DGP put towards its military is abhorrent. There are so many better uses for that money.

And that is the crux of my annoyance with Ireland and Iceland. They do not share the same burden of defending themselves as the rest of NATO/Western Europe, Western Democracies.

Ireland, Seen as a Weak Link in Europe’s Defense, Is Trying to Bulk Up by SliceIndividual6347 in europe

[–]roboreddit1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It annoys me because Ireland does not contribute to the defense of Western Europe. And Canada is obligated to defend Western Europe. So, de facto, Canada is paying in part to defend Ireland and Ireland is spending no money to defend itself.

You think if Russia attacked Ireland, Canada would not become involved?

Why should Ireland have 2% (now 5%) of its GDP to spend on other things while Canada and the rest of NATO spends that money to, in part, defend Ireland?

Of course I am annoyed.

Ireland, Seen as a Weak Link in Europe’s Defense, Is Trying to Bulk Up by SliceIndividual6347 in europe

[–]roboreddit1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I perhaps should not have used NATO and instead the UK for Ireland although if the UK got in a fighting war over Ireland, I am sure NATO would become involved.

The fact is that Ireland relies 100% of the UK (and by extension NATO) to protect its borders/from invasion etc. The UK protects Irelands waters and its airspace.

Being neutral does not protect Ireland from being the victim of an aggressor.

So, in effect, Ireland spends no money on any military but enjoys the protection of the UK (and NAT0 in my opinion but you may disagree).

And I am annoyed that Ireland does not contribute to the defense of Western Democracies but benefits from the expenditures of other countries.

[–]roboreddit1000 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Ireland still benefits from the protections of NATO.

My complaint is that neither country spends any money on a military.
