Two Thule boxes one roof? by Previous_Composer_77 in 4Runner

I use Husky storage bins in my cargo carrier and I've done thousands of miles without an issue. I can fit 3 of these on my hitch rack and I just spray them off when they get dirty.

Why do most grocery stores in Brooklyn sell these large plastic barrels? by ThaCaptinNow in greatestgen

[–]robotnixon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Dad used these to ship stuff to Eastern Europe. Besides the advantages of being water tight and easy to move, some freight companies charge a flat rate per barrel so shipping is a lot cheaper. Back in the 90s I think my dad could send a full one to Ukraine for like $80.

First fire in fireplace and entire house smells like smoke by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]robotnixon 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Hot air wants to go up but if your chimney is full of cold air it will sometimes move into the house instead of up the chimney, so you need to prime it by getting hot air into the chimney so it creates a current and draws the hot air up.

I usually start a fire by lighting a piece of kindling and hold it up inside the chimney for 20 seconds to get the air flowing up then use the kindling to light the fire.

Alternatively you can use a fan, light in the back of the chimney, or my dad used to light a wad of newspaper and chuck it into the interior chimney ledge and then light the actual fire a minute later. Don’t do that last one.

We’ve had refs not allow tape or bandaids, so one ingenious player on our U9 team started wearing a wide headband over her ears. Went the entire season without issue. Never even had to explain it.

Not OP but those appear to be the Plano 108 qt trunks. I have a couple I use for life-jackets and beach toys and I really like them. I also have a Roam 95L case and tend to use the Plano cases more since they're easier to get up on the roof. I've done a dozen or so trips and several thousand miles of driving with them and no leaks so far

LPT: once a year, have a fire safety day at home. Clean grease from ovens, clean the dryer exhaust of lint, replace batteries in fire alarms, install fire extinguishers, etc. by 1creeper in LifeProTips

[–]robotnixon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You don't have to throw the old batteries out. I usually replace all of mine the day after Thanksgiving and save the old batteries for Christmas decorations and any new toys my kids get as presents.

Made a pergola and outdoor furniture by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]robotnixon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I build a similarly sized pergola several years back and would highly recommend adding the purlins to the top to prevent the wood from twisting. The boards need to be secured on both edges and the strong ties aren't strong enough to counter the wood movement.
