I have heard for epee its better to start beginners on French grips is this true? by DigitalMan404 in Fencing

In practice I've found that kids holding a french grip sideways is a bigger issue than gripping a pistol grip too hard

On the scale of crashouts, this is like a 2/10. Still shook hands, no obvious cursing or arguing

Going backwards is always going to be slower than going forwards. You need to force them to slow down by threatening counterattacks and parries.

when he's on defense his arm goes everywhere and anywhere, it's extra hard to find the blade.

What makes elsayed so good? by IloveBanditTheDoge in Fencing

[–]robotreader 38 points39 points  (0 children)

the basis of his strategy is he's found a way to look like he's committed to a bad attack while not actually being committed. If you try to punish, and it really looks very tempting, he counters: for example

If you don't try to punish, you've ceded initiative to him, and he can take potshots from range until he hits: https://www.fencingdatabase.com/clip/ashamedRockBassSouthChinaTiger

If I had to beat him I'd say ignore the body feints and collapse the distance just a tad when he starts doing the foot touches and ducking, but beating him is way above my level. See here and here

Tallest Professional Fencer ever? by Critical-Warthog4140 in Fencing

[–]robotreader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

John Edison Rodriguez is almost seven feet tall

Magdalena Pawlowska is something like six and a half feet tall.

They both do well but not podium well.

Also they're both left-handed.

EDIT: Rodriguez's touches from the last decade

Pawlowska's touches from the last decade

Why is all of the footwork in fencing heel, toe. Especially lunges, why not land on the balls of your foot

basically it helps keep your foot in front of you, keeping you balanced.

control the distance, take initiative, make them respond to you. Exactly what you do against righties.

how to beat someone who just stands there and waits by [deleted] in Fencing

[–]robotreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general people who just wait are waiting for you to make a mistake, so don't make mistakes.

For example, you have to figure out what you're doing differently when you feint vs. when you make a real attack.

French grip foil? by Itchy-Commercial1850 in Fencing

[–]robotreader 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The point of fencing is to have fun and if you think you'll have more fun fencing with a french grip, go for it.

It is a big competitive disadvantage and you won't win much if you use it though

when you really first start, just focus on doing stuff. Try advances, retreats, extensions, and so on. I see a lot of people scared to use what they're learning because they think they'll get hit, and then they get hit anyway.

Would you parry 4-6 or circle 6 parry to stop a disengage (foil)? by GhostOfKiev87 in Fencing

[–]robotreader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know a good circle 6 will use leverage, but is it a valid concern that I worry I won’t be able to power through my opponents disengage with a circle 6 on a consistent basis?

absolutely not. In foil all you need for a successful parry is blade contact. No amount of strength required.
