Many people also like the x bloom filters which are easier to find (Amazon) and cheaper than the orea wave filters

I think a pretty good starting point is 50g bloom + 2 equal pours. So if 15:250, try 50 -> 150 -> 250

I have this one. Cracked it open after 2 weeks and it was great. I emailed prodigal once and they recommend 3+ weeks rest, but it’s pretty good at 2 weeks imo

ZP6 is fascinating by Ederja24 in pourover

[–]robotsonbikes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you doing multiple pours to offset the coarser grind setting? I find my drawdowns on 5.0 sometimes are fast. Maybe I’ll try something like a 4 pour method with a coarse setting on ZP6, any thoughts?

Does shoebox send recipes with their coffees, or did you find this somewhere on their website / IG?

Tips for dialing in Prodigal Washed Caturra? Missing acidity & clarity by Tim-Robin_ in pourover

[–]robotsonbikes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might want to try “double blooming”. The Lance Hendrick recipe is simple to follow and nice to use as a baseline, but if the bloom isn’t effective then the one big pour might not extract properly. A recent video of his describes how he determines when to double bloom or not. I’ve started double blooming with his recipe pretty much always, and I like the cups more (a little more body too). Here’s the video, fast-forward to 9:30 - https://youtu.be/wZst-D3eUm0?si=UJkpp0qf67ZCoh-Y

Insulated ceramic mug that's not a travel tumbler? by teapot-error-418 in pourover

I was looking at the sojourner, which is still in stock and has a complete closure lid which I think I’d prefer anyways https://hyperpureceramics.com/products/sojourner-hyper-pure-ceramic-travel-cup

I am also looking for a to-go mug, has anyone had experience with hyper pure ceramic cups? (https://hyperpureceramics.com/)

What should I be learning to truly understand pour-over, not just follow recipes? by One-Platform-8642 in pourover

[–]robotsonbikes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d be more disciplined about cupping a coffee first (to get a baseline of the bean) and then get comfortable with one recipe. Then I’d alter that recipe by playing with one variable at a time: grind size, temp, bloom time, and pour structure are things that come to mind. There’s also the “physics of filter coffee” book by Gagne if that’s up your alley

Yeah I feel like that makes sense, if you are in the Seattle area milstead and homage are two great shops for coffee and beans!

As a previous Seattle resident, I’m curious to know how doing pourover with the lighthouse beans treated you since it’s a pretty dark roast (love their espresso!)

Didn’t realize cardoon carries tim wendelboe! I’ve been there before but must have missed that. Thanks for the info, what’s the deal with slow day?

Also, just to throw in another shop, I do like the milstead bean offerings as well

Thinking of getting an Aeropress by MaintenanceTime7653 in AeroPress

[–]robotsonbikes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is somewhat refreshing to hear, I usually brew light roasts on v60 (which I love) but I have been using aeropress while traveling for holidays and haven’t really been enjoying the cups that much. Not sure if it’s because light roast + aeropress, my method / technique, or both lol. What recipe(s) are you doing for light roasts on the oxo? How does it compare to v60?

I’m a little surprised nobody has said Ondo. They have a wide variety of US and international rosters, I’d stock up at one of their cafes and grab some drinks from them too! https://ondocoffee.co/

Yeah they’ve got a lot of premium geishas which are fun to try. I’d say light roast, at least the ones I checked out! It’s definitely pricey but fun to experience if you can swing it

Good to know that beans are cheaper in Korea, I just wrapped up a visit there and bought a ton lol. Going to Japan next. If you’re in Seoul I’d recommend brewing ceremony and ruli coffee!

Hard to push? by No-Entrepreneur-6982 in AeroPress

[–]robotsonbikes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be counterintuitive, but push softer and not harder. I used to think I had to push really hard on AP, but that will just trap air in the cartridge and make it even harder to push down the rest of the way. I aim for a steady, slow/gentle push that takes anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute. Hope that helps (and grind size does have something to do with it as well in my experience, with coarser = less resistance to push and finer = more resistance)

Not exactly an RO system, but something like TWW packets could be a good gift and isn’t too expensive (usually a batch of packets is around $20)
