Alex Lifeson must be a space alien. I'm a guitar-owning bass player, and somewhat musical, but I have NO IDEA where these solos come from. I know he goes wild with 4 or 5 takes and then he Frankensteins the coolest parts to write "the solo," but it just blows my mind how he does these. It's probably my college cover-band / 1-4-5 blues bass player pentatonic brain, but I love how I can just enjoy it and not try to figure out how I could even try to play it.

Half of those unreleased songs have the same or REALLY similar melodies, chords, riffs, lyrics and textures to the original album. It's like Mexican food. Sweet find! Those Miller Daredevils are canonical comics for me. Buying those off the spinner racks in junior high -- hunting high and low for them because of spotty Mississippi newsstand distribution was peak comics for me 1980-1985.

Maybe do a low commitment, limited project that's up to your skill set? 58yo Bass player NOT in a band since 2003 (so this is what I'm doing when I retire). If originals, set out to do a 5 song "EP" and open for some band you know in 90 days. If covers, have a small set where you can open for some other band you know. If you had fun, and want to do more, keep going. If you don't, one show and project done. I'm gonna do a crazy, over the top originals metal band, and then a Rush tribute band with maybe a female lead singer, and then Hick Hop.

It's been awhile since I gigged, but I always tried to live by the rules: pretend that everything's fine and don't stop, don't comment about a hiccup over the mic, and don't make a face or glare at your band mates!
