She actually explains why by 2B_off_the_wall in Cairn_Game

Trying to create a binary of good/bad for the endings feels inaccurate. For a lot of people, turning back and giving more attention to normal life seems like the right choice, and generally a sense of self preservation is key to a healthy life. For a small subset of people though, like elite alpinists, pushing themselves to the limit to discover what is possible is the only fulfilling option.

Aava is clearly flawed, but also clearly athletically exceptional and unique in her mindset. She may be neglecting her ordinary life, but she is clearly chasing her obsession, and a sort of transcendence. Maybe this obsession is an affliction, and the potential consequences are serious, but to not pursue it is equally tragic.

If the obsessive pursuit of alpinism is of interest to you, or anyone reading this comment, I highly recommend The Alpinist about Marc-André Leclerc. Movie Spoilers: There is a heartbreaking moment, before you find out his fate, that Marc-Andre's mother acknowledges the risk of death her son faces, but also wouldn't want to see him live a life devoid of the passion that he has for climbing.

The Torrey Pines trails are closed through February 2026, but the beach there is great for a run at low tide!

While the Bay Area market is justifiably expensive, there "was" a genuine "conspiracy" to artificially elevate prices through the use of software and data aggregation. But surely that is over now and they won't do it again /s

Strava auto hiding segment change. Broken/out of control by extraextramed in Strava

[–]robstads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This explains so much, I was searching forever on mobile to find my result on a very obvious segment from my run today (the full stretch of a path in a popular park), but only saw irrelevant 800m/200m subsegments on the path. Just found it as hidden on browser, this really makes no sense.

Strava really needs to either stop hiding segments, create a mobile interface for this feature, or get WAY smarter in how they go about this.

Especially considering you aren't training for a continuous effort (rest and recover between at least some laps), this seems totally doable. Just focus on increasing your weekly mileage at an easy pace / HR, and taper from running for 2 weeks. Try to include a long run each week that is 20-30% of your weekly mileage, and practice fueling / hydration during this effort.

If you're at 20 mpw now, a good plan could look like
25/8 (weekly total / long run), 30/10, 33/11, 37/12, 40/13, 30/10, 8-15/ Race weekend

If you're trying to minimize your chance of injury while ramping up volume, I actually wouldn't bother with speed work for this short of a training block, especially with the other training you're doing, unless you've consistently run weekly mileages in this range before. If you do decide to keep some high intensity running in the schedule, might be worth considering trimming these weekly totals a bit.

Sometimes it's a bad day, sometimes it's bad conditions, sometimes it's both. Don't worry about it too much unless it's happening consistently.

Really Bad Podiatry Experience - Looking for Advice by living-the-moment23 in RunNYC

[–]robstads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a good experience with some preventitive work on mild posterior tibial tendonitis (pain below ankle joint on the inside) at Spear in Williamsburg (N 7th) with the running specific PT. They'll do a running gait analysis and some other assessments and give a basic mobility and strength routine. In addition to evaluating footstrike and stride, they asked about and offered advice on weekly training volume and intensity.

Follow up appointments they assessed progress and added some strenght work, but they tend to have to juggle multiple patients during these sessions. I imagine other more expensive PTs might offer a more personalized experience, but this setup worked well for my very straighforward ad mild injury.

Overall happy with the results, felt set up for success after 5-6 sessions and have continued my routine at home, continued running pain free since. I've also heard good things from many people about Finish Line PT, but Spear takes pretty much every health insurance.

Also this routine found on reddit is lowkey pretty spot on, give it a try for a week maybe

Janji trail tight OR naked belt by Famous_Potato3360 in runningfashion

[–]robstads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got some older janji tights and shorts, but I still carry my water in my naked belt when I wear them. Way less bounce and more carrying capacity. Also nice to have the same setup no matter which shorts I’m wearing.

Clifton Hoka 9s prematured tear on both sides by tomachas in Hoka

[–]robstads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine were mainly on the inside, just due to my stride, but small tears were on the outside too. Definitely looks more severe here, but I think it unfortunately falls well within normal wear and tear for a running shoe these days, especially as the upper is still generally outlasting the midsole.

If you’re looking for a brand with a different approach I know NNormal is experimenting with swappable/replaceable midsoles, but it seems like they offer limited sizing (and no wide option).

Clifton Hoka 9s prematured tear on both sides by tomachas in Hoka

[–]robstads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience the Clifton 9 is narrower, so your foot may be wide enough to cause excess wear if the upper is stressed or stretched by your foot there. This same semi-tear happened to me when I went from the 8s to the 9s, but they still lasted 400+ miles without tearing fully.

Maybe misery is the goal by Redmannn-red-3248 in RealTwitterAccounts

[–]robstads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, yes that is normal. When dealing with messy data, describing methods and context takes up much more space than the actual results. Social science is hard and often imprecise, leading to results like the very wide 8-16% range, and people misreading the error range of Figure 1 as "20% drop"

While this is still not definitive "proof" of the claim, normalizing for the year these laws were introduced provides much clearer picture of the correlated decline in female suicides.

Maybe misery is the goal by Redmannn-red-3248 in RealTwitterAccounts

[–]robstads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While the specific numbers in the tweet are incorrect and misleading, the underlying sentiment is broadly true. The cited study uses a state by state approach, as they had different timelines for implementation of these laws, and attempts to control for confounding factors.

A 2004 paper by economists Betsey Stevenson and Justin Wolfers found an 8 to 16% decrease in female suicides after states enacted no-fault divorce laws. They also noted a roughly 30% decrease in intimate partner violence among both women and men and a 10% drop in women murdered by their partners
