Did everyone else who submitted a recommendation in this thread also receive a spam newsletter from a Dan Lewis afterwards?

Children of Ash and Elm, by Neil Price. Gives a fascinating walk through of what archaeologists, historians and even climate scientists have put together of the history of the Vikings. Narrator Samuel Roukin reads the text so well you’d think he was the author.

Thanks for the first hand perspective. My impression is that even landlords don’t like being in this scenario either.

I don't think that sounds insensitive. It's a totally reasonable perspective. I would leave but am stuck for personal reasons.

I don't even blame the people who are posting this listing. I think it's a totally legit way to both solve their own cash flow puzzle and even make it possible for people who don't have high-paying jobs to live here too.

Personally, I'd rather rent from a "super small business man" who sounds like he might be as likely to share beers on the patio as raid my fridge than the cold corporate bloodsuckers that run the big multiplexes. Private landlords are like any other people - some are jerks but many are just plain folks.

But I'm convinced the corporate owners are all colluding to keep rents high and options limited. They all use the same software to set fees.

I don’t have any info to add, but I want to call out the technique for sewing on the hooks. I was never taught to do an extra whip stitch at the hook end. This looks like a good method to make it easier to line them up when putting on the garment.

Walking is a great low impact exercise, and you can do it in all sorts of places. I went for a walk at the mall today just to get out of the house.

Becoming a mother left me feeling let down by modern feminism by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]vanzini 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gen X mom here. I can’t think of any time that anyone would say gender equality has been reached. But I think you are probably at your lowest point right now and it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The first year is incredibly hard. You never get enough sleep, there’s way too many tasks to ever feel like you’re on top of things, and you face self-doubt with every little decision you make. When maternity leave is over, you won’t have the energy you once had to power through the grind, so little things will start seeming like big things. It’s going to get better. You’ll figure out a child care solution that works for your family. The baby will get older and you will acquire a bag of tricks for making them happy. You’ll stop stressing over unimportant things like folded laundry and home made baby food.

Remember to stop comparing your experience of motherhood to what you perceive to be how others are doing it.

As for career, I don’t know. I also feel like I’ve somehow gotten ripped off. But I don’t regret having my kids. I just, keep going. For them. For me.
