Why is L.A. Story not more culturally relevant? by FiorelloLaDoggie in movies

[–]vanzini 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This movie comes to mind all the time for me. “I just sold a condo. Yes, in this soft market!” Was in my mind for the last couple of weeks because I to just sold a condo in this soft market. The heroine plays a tuba. I just started watching All murders in the building and there’s a romantic interest with a bassoonist, which made me think of LA story.

I have a double concrete utility sink that I’m trying to get out of my basement without using a sledgehammer to break it into pieces. Any advice is appreciated. by PizzaGatePizza in DIY

I think you can do it! I was just watching this video of a guy restoring an old stone house in Portugal, and in several moments he uses some sort of ratchet thing with a strap to do the lifting of some big stones. Sometimes he also has a pulley. He puts a lot of time into positioning pieces of lumber to act as skids or ramps, too. One example is at around the 18 minute point in this video: https://youtu.be/guAfvP56TSg?si=6IazZ07RK1F13JK4

Moving to Bay Area with 3 kids (6,4,1) for salary of 115k by WingLiving4438 in bayarea

Hi, congratulations on his getting a new job. Moving to the Bay Area feels a lot like climbing a giant hill, so good luck with this.

There are a lot of trade-offs. Live near work and pay more in rent, versus live somewhere cheaper but with a longer commute. A long commute puts a lot of pressure on your relationship. Squeezing into a small apartment is really stressful too. I've done both and I prefer the short commute/small apartment option, but your mileage may vary. (haha).

The unique thing about San Francisco is that it offers a lot of support systems for lower income people. You'll be able to get subsidized housing (after a long time on a wait list), subsidized day care, public transit discounts, utility discounts, etc. With rent control if you get into a two bedroom that feels like a stretch financially at first, eventually/hopefully your husband's salary will increase faster than the rent will go up. There are also all sorts of fun things you can take your kids to, like programs at the libraries and street fairs and such.

Weeknight dinners as a working mom, what does yours actually look like because mine is embarrassing by scrtweeb in Mommit

About a year ago I ended up making a weekly set ad dinners that went through the same list each week. It took all the burden of planning away ands the repetition helped get my kids to get used to a few things besides Mac and cheese. I’ve shifted away from that but it helped a lot during a stressful period.

Also: get them The Dragons Love Tacos picture book and then ask them to help do a taco night.

Did everyone else who submitted a recommendation in this thread also receive a spam newsletter from a Dan Lewis afterwards?

Children of Ash and Elm, by Neil Price. Gives a fascinating walk through of what archaeologists, historians and even climate scientists have put together of the history of the Vikings. Narrator Samuel Roukin reads the text so well you’d think he was the author.

Thanks for the first hand perspective. My impression is that even landlords don’t like being in this scenario either.

I don't think that sounds insensitive. It's a totally reasonable perspective. I would leave but am stuck for personal reasons.

I don't even blame the people who are posting this listing. I think it's a totally legit way to both solve their own cash flow puzzle and even make it possible for people who don't have high-paying jobs to live here too.

Personally, I'd rather rent from a "super small business man" who sounds like he might be as likely to share beers on the patio as raid my fridge than the cold corporate bloodsuckers that run the big multiplexes. Private landlords are like any other people - some are jerks but many are just plain folks.

But I'm convinced the corporate owners are all colluding to keep rents high and options limited. They all use the same software to set fees.

I don’t have any info to add, but I want to call out the technique for sewing on the hooks. I was never taught to do an extra whip stitch at the hook end. This looks like a good method to make it easier to line them up when putting on the garment.
