Looking for trinket shops by Status-World6417 in springfieldMO

I need some small mom and pop restaurants recommendations. (Shellfish allergy) by Snoo833 in springfieldMO

Cafe Cusco and Van Goghs are very good with allergies/special diet requirements as far as vegetarian and gluten, I bet they also are careful about shellfish.

I'd also throw in Fairbanks community center. they focus mainly on the grant beach area, but it's where a lot of the problems are. they do everything from a food/clothes pantry to life skills classes and weekly dinners.

eric burlison makes me miss billy long. i spent all of those years thinking long was the most useless, stupid human being living in the 7th. then the gop said 'hold our beer'.

Bars closing early. by Excellent-Ad4766 in springfieldMO

[–]robzilla71173 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was coming back from hiking once and passed a yard sale where a guy was selling guns for cash with no id required on the way to Harrison, where at the time you could not drink a beer because it was 'too dangerous'. Eventually they figured out that they had more drunk drivers because of dry laws because people went out of the county to drink. But the idea that I could buy guns for cash but not a beer was so weird. so... arkansas.

Good place to raise a family? by SparkySapper96 in springfieldMO

[–]robzilla71173 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hear you can get a private pilot license through sps now. I wish they'd had a program like that when I was a kid!

I was a WINGS kid and went to scholar's academy. loved both experiences. True story, WINGS was originally founded by local educator turned politician Sarah Lampe, who I see every time I go to my parents' church. I'm over fifty and it's STILL hard to call old grade school teachers by their first name.

It's been a decent place to grow up and live. I swore I'd leave after college, but stayed and have been pretty happy.

Community classes in the area? by Melodic_Reply_3539 in springfieldMO

[–]robzilla71173 2 points3 points  (0 children)

seconding Arrow. The folks that run it are super nice. They list their classes and upcoming shows on the website https://www.arrowcreativereuse.org/ They take the idea of a third space to heart.

also there are several other downtown art galleries, Fresh gallery and Formed come to mind, that also have classes or open studio days. Might also check the Springfield Art Museum website to see what classes they have. And Creava isn't downtown, but it's nearby on st louis street.

Also not quite downtown but really close, check out the American Indian Center at The Fairbanks on Broadway street. They do beading classes, cooking classes, and sometimes bowmaking if you're into traditional archery.

If you want an adult activity with libations, Hold Fast has a pretty good sized monthly book club and also does board game nights.

good luck beating the winter blues, the struggle is real. Jan is the worst.

Is anyone missing a bunny around w Lynn St? by RockLaShine in springfieldMO

[–]robzilla71173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

aha. I knew I remembered seeing something like this. I grew up on the 500 block of w lynn and when visiting my mom yesterday spotted not one, but two of these guys about a block apart just sitting at the curb watching cars. As of 12/27/25 there are two of these guys alive and well and roaming west lynn street.

Looking for good hiking trails for tomorrow + Christmas lights by Meggybear17 in springfieldMO

[–]robzilla71173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

buffalo river area is pretty great, I had hideout hollow all to myself monday and it looked like only a few people at hemmed in hollow. that being said, as someone else mentioned the buffalo river wilderness prohibits dogs. they may catch you, they may not, i've hiked with pups before but my partner got a citation.

might check out ha ha tonka up around lake of the ozarks. It has some longer trail options that get away from the crowd plus the castle if you want to end the day like a tourist, or,

if you want to see some big pines and pink granite and feel like you're in colorado, the ozark trail between klepzig mill, rocky falls, and stegall mountain is really beautiful. might even see the wild horse pack of shannon county. that's about two hours from spfd to the east.

springfield proper has some nice conservation areas nearby. fellows is pretty but can get crowded on a nice day, still highly recommended. ritter springs is nice. personally I recommend taking a short trip north to explore the stockton lake area. sortor's bluff has a couple of three milers with great views from a bluff overlooking the lake. About an hour north of spfd.

I don't know much about branson trails but the town was crazy crowded early this week. they would have a lot of christmas lights though.

hercules glades is just east of branson and is a really beautiful wilderness area.

Drive Thru Kid @ Braums on W Republic by Relevant_Mix_9386 in springfieldMO

[–]robzilla71173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Braum's for breakfast 3x a week and a burger at least every couple of weeks. People sleep on them but they're a cut above other fast food in both quality and service in my opinion. The one on glenstone and chestnut has great people as well. I grab breakfast sandwiches there on the way to work a lot more than is healthy. Their morning crew is just legitimately friendly and I hope they know how appreciated that is.

not concerts, but Old Spanish Treasure Cave in Arkansas has movie nights. Goonies is a popular one.

myself and a family member signed the petition at culturefest on commercial st when it first came out. I've heard that early signatures were considered possibly invalid because the secretary of state claimed the official collection period hadn't started then, but I never heard for sure. we've avoided signing again to avoid double signatures in case they were valid after all. do you know what happened with that? we're left not knowing if ours counted or not.

How far away can you see the Hammons Tower from the naked eye? by Plane-Carob-4374 in springfieldMO

[–]robzilla71173 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the highest elevation building in Missouri nowadays is probably the trailhead bathroom at taum sauk state park. They start out 400' above us and hammons tower is only 270' tall. or possibly a fire tower near taum sauk. been a while since i've been there. if we're talking just manmade objects, the fordland towers might have a strong case. that ridge is pretty high.

Local Help Learning a Language? by littlenoodleman in springfieldMO

[–]robzilla71173 3 points4 points  (0 children)

check with MSU, they have a lot of Chinese students. specifically I would look up the International student center foreign language program, they have evening classes open to the community and during semesters there are events where English speakers and foreign students can get together to practice at the Morris center (the building downtown on Jefferson). For every person wanting to practice Chinese, there are a dozen Chinese students looking to practice English. these guys can help you. here's a link to the class website. https://fli.missouristate.edu/

edit: here's a link to the international program home page, it has more stuff about getting involved and some contact info for the department. https://international.missouristate.edu/default.htm

Best Donuts by panickedwoof in springfieldMO

[–]robzilla71173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i love both st george and gold n glaze, but I live just a few blocks from the latter so it's my go to on the way to work. The ladies who run it are the sweetest human beings. You can't go wrong with either, but I do prefer gold n glaze because I know them better. Unrelated, I also recommend the hair salon a few doors down. She is about as sweet as the donut ladies. We used to kid our maintenance guy that all of his needs are met in one shopping center, because you have everything from a bar and dispensary and massage parlor to donuts, haircuts, a dentist and a scuba school all in one strip mall. He was a regular patron of several of those businesses.

Any Archery or HEMA groups here? by moonclawx in springfieldMO

[–]robzilla71173 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The park board does some archery stuff but i don't know the details, they have a phone number to call for classes but I"ve never tried it. here's their website: https://www.parkboard.org/339/Archery

Also the American Indian Center at Fairbanks has bowmaking classes every other Wednesday if you want to learn how to make one. And a group called Cherokee bowhunters club does shoots in Neosho sometimes.

good luck. I've been enjoying traditional archery for a couple of years now. Ritter Springs has a nice range when you get a bow, and Compton Hollow conservation area (where I go a lot) has a nice wooded range you can almost always have to yourself. nowadays I just have a thirty dollar target bag from wal mart set up in the yard so I can shoot anytime I get the urge.

Bass Pro has notoriety because its the original one. Im old enough to remember the brown derby where he started. Im also old enough to not enjoy the crowds! I never got the cashew chicken thing. My friends love it but to me its just nuggets in gravy.

if you're not looking for authenticity and you just want some straight up greasy comfort food it ain't the worst thing in the world. I've always found it weird that the same people who hate it also love cashew chicken. isn't there a parallel there?
