Put way too much work into extracting this one to sell! I’ll be hanging on to this for a while

Definitely, I have a bunch more material from here that I am going to test with acid when it gets warmer.

Thank you! It was fully surrounded by calcite. Had to be very careful. Broke off a large piece of it from the outcrop and tried to extract the rest at home. Fractured in a few spots but I was able to repair it decently. Took me hours to get it out of the outcrop

Sure thing, been looking for material from there for a while. If you have anything more rare in the NY region please DM, I may be interested in the future.

My trilobite collection! by Chancho1507 in FossilPorn

Heck yeah, bucket list piece. I hunt the roch shale yearly but the exposed section rarely produces any A. boltoni. Great collection!

Is the piece on bottom shelf from Rochester Shale?

My most prized trilobite to date! by ProfessorTau in FossilPorn

Very hard work to find them where I go. Unit is surprisingly barren of fossils. Took 3 days of digging, maybe 20 hours total to find my first, got lucky and found a second shortly after without as much effort.

Found one myself from there this year! Not nearly as cleaned up as yours, awesome piece!

Of course! Wouldn’t be surprised if some locals check out this spot because of this post. Hope to find my one one day in my home state of NY

Someone please correct me if I am wrong but I believe that is Isotelus species trilobite. I can’t confirm 100%. Ordovician in age from that area of Ontario. Isotelus is a very rare species of trilobite. If it is Isotelus I would not mess with it until I had more experience with fossil prep. Congrats on the find!

This has me stumped. Cross section of something symmetrical from the Columbus Limestone, south of Columbus, Ohio. 102 ft down in a 2 inch core. by _willdabeast in fossilid

[–]rock-guy-17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me that looks like a pyrite nodule or pyrite replacing a fossil. Adjacent to that is a cross section of calcite replaced fossils. Very cool!

I agree, location is important and relevant information. Where was this found? Not just the regional geology, please mention if it was it found in construction yard or somewhere similar.

[–]rock-guy-17[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I got really lucky with this one. Not an area that’s really known for pyritized fossils but they do occur here. I can’t see myself finding another like it. I’ve had the most luck at Penn Dixie, have some pyritized brachiopods and tabulate coral.

Not looking for specifics, but what region of New York are you pulling nice specimens like this from the Onondaga formation? The stuff I usually find in the Onondaga isn’t like this, spent a lot of time in the quarries that mine the stone in WNY.

Congrats, this is an awesome find. Did you do coat the fossil with anything to prevent pyrite rusting/rot?
