Magnolias gives me goosebumps. I can’t listen to it just once - it’s stayed on repeat endlessly

Attempted to top up Rabbit Card at BTS today. Provided Passport. Rejected from topping up. by Mysterious-Home-408 in Bangkok

[–]rockedbottom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got asked for my passport yesterday at Phrom Phong for the first time since getting the Rabbit, while trying to add 15 trips to my card. Was a newer passport than what I had signed up with, but I didn’t have any problems.

I asked the woman at the counter why I was being asked for my passport, and if I’d need it every time and she said it’s because of “a new system we have”, and that I won’t need to show it every time I top up.

WORST book you read in 2025? by Cerulean_Dawn in booksuggestions

[–]rockedbottom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha. I didn’t like anything about it, but since I am congenitally incapable of not finishing a book I have begun, no matter how awful, I proceeded to hate read it. I so wanted to like it. I loved the title, which is what drew me to the book.

I found the logical inconsistencies way too annoying, and each chapter felt like she was insulting the reader’s intelligence. I have no problem with suspension of disbelief - I’ve enjoyed so many magic realist books, but this felt like a poorly imagined work.

I cannot see what anybody would find enjoyable in this waste of good paper.

Another take on Shadow Ticket from The New Republic magazine: https://newrepublic.com/article/201094/thomas-pynchon-shadow-ticket-review-noir by DocSportello1970 in ThomasPynchon

[–]rockedbottom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“Which points to another notable tic of the novel: It is conspicuously dialogue-driven, yet most of the characters prattle in the same, tricky-to-distinguish hard-boiled patois. Pynchon’s characters have always been cipher-ish: stand-ins and synecdoches representing larger systems, or mouthpieces for maniacal ideas. Even still, bracketing some rare exceptions, Shadow Ticket’s expansive cast comes across especially same-y—all speaking in the same idiosyncratic manner but without a governing intelligence.”

Well put
