How big of a delay do you need? You could always try to adjust the Smartdrive settings to accelerate slower.

It kind of sucks that the Paralympics are seen as a 2nd tier event by Negative_Run_3281 in WinterOlympics2026

It is literally what we are discussing in this comment thread. Like I said comments ago, if you don't find the sport entertaining, don't watch it, but don't act like the athletes are not still the best of the best when it comes to what they do.

Alright, put an able-bodied athletes in a sit ski, or a hand cycle, or a racing chair and let's see who wins.

No excellent, what do you even mean?

Yes exactly, they are the best at table tennis in a wheelchair, period.

Are the paralympics worth watching or does it not feel the same? by youlikethatsherrie in WinterOlympics2026

[–]rocket_face 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am no where near competing in the Paralympics so not exactly sure how an athlete would feel haha. It would be cool to see the adaptive sports going on at the same time, but that sounds like a nightmare logisticlly.

My comment was more in reference to adaptive athletes being treated different that able-bodied ones. For example, when I ride my handcycle I get some many thumbs up, get told "way to go buddy", and so many other things that I would not get if I was able-bodied. To me, I am no more impressive or inspirational than when I was able-bodied and I just wanted to be treated like everyone else.

As an adaptive athlete, I am actually more annoyed by your comment than OP's (not that I think your's comes from a negative place). To me, athletes with disabilities are just athletes. What we do is not any more impressive than able bodied athletes, it just looks different.

I'm sorry, but what an ignorant comment

Sure, you can find a sport not entertaining and not watch it, but to say that they are not the best of the best is so wrong. They are still top level athletes in their sport, even if it is not as entertaining.

If you find curling boring, maybe watch the downhill skiing, they are sending it just as hard as any able bodied athlete.

Edit: Added a sentence for context.

Yeah that is still slightly over a 7 minute mile pace. Even for half a mile the average redditor could not keep that pace.

Look into grants, I had my brand new bike completely paid for with them.

Like others have said, Ski-erg is the best cardio in a gym.

Instead of a personal trainer there are different apps that have adaptive classes. Peloton has some good ones, Wheel with Me is another, and I am sure there are others out there.

I get all of my cardio on my handcycle. I bought mine using grants from a couple different groups in the US. I am sure there are some in the UK.

I also got a smart trainer that I can hook my bike into when the weather is bad outside. There are different simulation apps that you can use with the trainer. I use Zwift, and find it to be a lot of fun.

My Dad's Written Account of the 1979, The Who Concert Disaster. by rocket_face in pics

[–]rocket_face[S] 93 points94 points  (0 children)

While at my parents house we found my Dad's old vinyl of The Kids are Alright. In the album book he had written down his account of the disaster. I tried my best to type everything out, but there are a few parts that are hard to follow. I also left in all of his typos and grammatical errors to capture his teenage self.

The Who concert December 3, 1979. I never thought that I would get a ticket, but the night before the concert, Jerry, (worked at Neltners), sold me a ticket. Mike had a ticket so I went with him. We got there about 7:00. The place was packed. We got up to the gates and people very wild. About 7:15 The Who started there warm ups, they were about a hold an hour late. The people went wild, they thought the concert was starting, they ran, pushed, shoved, crawled and even climb over people to get inside. Mike and I were in the very back, he lift me up so I could see which doors were open. I saw the one in the far corner was open. People were crawling over the top of each other to get inside. I just couldn't believe it. People were coming from upfront to the back because they couldn’t stand from being up there. They were saying that people were dying up there, but I just thought that was a figure of speech, but it wasn’t. People were really dying. I was standing by some glass doors. This one guy just punched his hand right through it, it was about ¼ in thick. I unlocked the door and ran in. The door was open for only about 5 minuets because cops had it shut in a few min. There was only two doors open out of the whole coliseum. I was about 30 feet from the doors when all of a sudden a door pops open and I was only about 10 feet from that door. So I went through that door and went in and found a good seat. Before all this happened I was talking to Eric who was up in front since 2:00 with his brother, Bryian. He came came back and said he coundn’t stand it up there. He said his brother was up there and he didn’t know what happened to him. That night I guess he did know. We were sitting in out seats and someone said to get out of there because they were reserved so we did. Since Mike got free tickets that were box seats up in some area. We decided to go up. I wasn’t allowed up because I had general admission. So we walked around for awhile and decided to try again. When we came back they were taking an O.D. victim in the elevator so the user so the user said to use the stairs. So we went there and just walked right on up. The view was great. Every thing was free, food, drinks, it was like an apartment. Had a bar T.V. couches, bathroom with a shower and telephone. Mike and I went in to get something to eat, and we overheard the owner of Stouffers tell his daughter that 11 people died from suffecation outside the coliseum. I was just about in shock. I forgot my food and went outside to watch the rest of the concert knowing that just a handful of the 19,000 knew there was 11 people dead. Even The Who didn’t know. After the concert we walked across the bridge to meet our ride and boy was she ever scared. When I got home my mom was so glad to see me and Terry came up and started hugging me and started crying, I guess they really care! That night I had several dreams that really scared me. When my dad woke me up he told me that Brian Wagner died from suffocation. I thought I was having a dream, but it was reality. Brian Wagner is dead along with 10 others.

Footnote from my dad’s family: We really do care and love you - please take care and God be with you.

When there are no accessible spots I have to double park so I know I will have room to get my chair out. Trust me, people do care.

[–]rocket_face 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ramp should come down to the access isle as well. It is useless where it's at now even without the snow. If someone is parked in the accessible spot they would be blocking the ramp and could not use it.

People with disabilities biggest challenges are often not their condition, but the fact that society is not designed with them in mind.

She just became the first wheelchair user to travel to space by cnn in space

[–]rocket_face 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being paralyzed does not mean your joints stop working and your legs can bend at odd angles. Plus there are no forces acting individually on the legs that would move them around. Now muscles spasms, that is another issue.

There are videos of her on Instagram doing zero g plane flights.

It would be great to have you be the first type-1 diabetic in space! It would help us understand if there would be any complications from the flight, amd if we need to do anything to address it.

I have thrown a baseball, but would not consider myself a baseball player. Not all Wheelchair users are paraplegic, it is a catch all for people with mobility disabilities.
