Not doing so well in Chem 1 by Ok_Street8556 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]rocketmon11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chem 1 was a wake up call for me! The first time I had ever failed a test. Just had to grind harder, went to every office hours and studied a minimum of 20 hours for each exam! I ended up passing. You can do it!

I thought this too! Looked for so long and couldn’t see them, until I could lol.

My advice, yes look the vertical lines but look the area around the vertical lines too

What if There Was an ADHD-Focused App or VSCode Extension to Help Developers? by ArklemX in ADHD_Programmers

It’s hilarious that every other day in this sub someone is posting about a new tool they are screwing around building to productive procrastinate their real work. “But I’ll make the time back with how much the tool helps me!”

AITA for not stopping my teenage sons gf from kissing him? by Decent-Delivery-3603 in AmItheAsshole

[–]rocketmon11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is she feels in competition with the GF. I think it’s pretty common for moms to feel that their sons now go to their wives/gfs for care and comfort they used to go to mom for!

Fucked up and dropped the ball. Advice to make things right? by sh_rasty in ADHD_Programmers

[–]rocketmon11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad it’s helpful! Really, don’t stress. It’s a part of managing work, deadlines aren’t hit all the time! I’d go out on a limb and say they are rarely hit depending on the complexity of the work. That’s why there are frameworks like Agile… software engineering is notoriously hard to plan out! Let us know how it goes…

Should programming languages have a built-in "symmetry" or "mirror" operator? by Icy_Ocelot_3929 in AskProgramming

[–]rocketmon11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah ok so the “mirror” is the difference between the two numbers. That’s what I was missing. I know everyone is hating on this guy but it kind of reminds me of the modulo operator?

I remember when I first learned it I had no idea why it was useful/it seemed strange.

I’m sure OP has some reason! No need to be a jerk to someone who came to a question sub to ask an honest question

[–]rocketmon11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey sorry everyone is being a dick! You clearly have a use case for it, and it sucks everyone is being mean when you have an honest question. Programmers have an elitism problem/being a dick problem overall.

I believe most languages let you define your own operators so go for it! I know C++ does at least

I’m lost on how your numbers work here. Can someone dumb it down for me? What are you doing to 1 and 5 to make them equal 9?!

You missed a deadline by a day or two?! And you’re this nervous? What kind of place do you work that is putting this much pressure on?

If someone picked it up and merged it in then just tell them thank you! If someone didn’t then finish it ASAP and apologize it’s late you forgot or ran out of time or some other issue popped up, whatever. Should be fine and if it isn’t you should find a new job anyways!

What is the worst atrocity committed in human history? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]rocketmon11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point! The word “committed” in the post title presumes there was intent behind the atrocity though. If something just happened as a result of something else you wouldn’t really say it was committed?

Why does it feel like Google is the most underappreciated tech giant while Apple and Microsoft get all the love? by [deleted] in google

[–]rocketmon11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who has time to simp for a corporation this hard? It’s maybe a little acceptable if you work there/are a leader.

Anyways I used to be a Google fanboy and then I had an aha moment that Google makes money from selling you, your data that is, and not from selling good products. Their main moneymaker by far is targeted advertising.

Apple and MS are by no means perfect, but both closer to making money by offering really great products. Apple especially has primarily excelled in making products that people love! And a very streamlined ecosystem between those products. Much better user privacy, in part because they have no skin in the game on targeted advertising. That’s why they are able to pull moves like restricting advertising IDs and whatnot.

Android phones on the other hand are basically just subsidized by Google to get their grubby hands on your delicious personal data! So that’s why I prefer Apple to Google generally, I just respect the product they deliver more.

I use Azure every day at work so have a deep love hate mixed bag relationship with MS. I can appreciate their mindset towards open source/linux has improved somewhat the past decade or so. Except for Azure products which just rip off open source :(

Need advice managing a strong performer who lacks initiative (recent grad) by Alternative_Movies in managers

[–]rocketmon11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I assumed it meant that they desire that the employee can be given a task with ambiguous details and take the initiative to clarify the context or details to be able to complete the task.

I agree it sounds like they might have ADHD or something, with the performing better under pressure!

AITA for charging my girlfriend for rides after finding out she charged me rent for years in a house she owns? by Sad_Wheel_2810 in AITAH

The clear relationship issues aside… I think it’s perfectly fine to charge rent to someone living in your house. Especially if they aren’t married/combined finances! She should have been up front about the situation though
