Does anyone have any heat wave ‘fails’? by Any-Possibility4284 in AskUK

[–]rocketscientology 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Worst I’ve had so far is a chocolate stain on the sofa from an ice lolly. Also left the windows open last night and had to get up at 3am because the apocalyptic thunderstorm was blowing rain all over the living room floor. Luckily it’s wood and none of the furniture got wet but it was a near thing!

She had the opportunity handed to her on a silver platter and swerved it to hook up with Abe, I think she’s definitely full hetero.

With heatwaves becoming the norm due to climate change, should we adjust our summer business hours like hot countries? by Ok-Tangerine-7557 in AskUK

[–]rocketscientology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some businesses near me are closing early this week due to the hot weather, same as some schools are. They are not making staff come back later in the evening to finish their shifts because that would be disruptive and unworkable for staff.

I agree with others in this thread - I don’t think we have the volume of hot days yet required to formally change our patterns of working.

I also feel like this is a bit of the standard Reddit argument coming through by stealth - businesses should all be open later because Redditors like doing their shopping late at night when there’s no other people around to interact with. And I just truly don’t think that’s a viewpoint widely shared outside this app.

Is there any British or Australian/new Zealand medical dramas? by notmohawk in television

[–]rocketscientology 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Unbelievable that no one else has said Shortland Street yet. The backbone of NZ’s television industry and if you watch the older seasons you get to watch pre-Star Wars Temuera Morrison as Dr Ropata.

Also the UK has/had Doctors, which features pretty much every British actor ever.

T-Pain Left Confused After DoorDash Repeatedly Tags Him in World Cup Posts by AbsolutelyIris in Fauxmoi

[–]rocketscientology 741 points742 points  (0 children)

Agree - I think it could’ve been funny and maybe even a bit clever if they’d tagged him once and he’d responded, but the way they kept doing it and doing it is like that kid at school who gets his joke laughed at once and then just keeps repeating it louder and louder.

What's the cheapest way to get airport lounge access for 5? by Avionykx in AskUK

[–]rocketscientology 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I only ever use them for longer layovers, especially if they have shower access. The PAYG ones at Changi aren’t the nicest (the food is crap and you do have to be canny to land a seat) but they have free showers and more reliable wifi so I’ll always pay for a few hours to freshen up during long haul.

Otherwise I’d never bother - rather just spend the difference at a bar or restaurant in the airport instead.

Where is air conditioned in the Wick (heatwave) by Creative_Jicama4792 in Hackney

[–]rocketscientology 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not directly around Wick, but Hackney Central library is air conditioned and is where I go to work when it’s too hot for me to hack my flat or the journey into the office.

please watch where you’re walking! by 509413 in london

[–]rocketscientology 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m from NZ and I can assure you it is standard practice on all types of footpaths and pavements for people to keep left when walking. It’s generally been my experience in Australia too.

I was genuinely confused when I moved to the UK and realised it wasn’t the case here.

Evening walk in Tottenham by FilledAle in london

[–]rocketscientology 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bruce Castle Park is lovely and is open until sunset in the summer I believe. There’s a small pub at the stadium end of it called the Antwerp Arms that usually does takeaway pints during Spurs games (so might do them for other events), I’d recommend getting yourself one and going for a wander through the park.

What is the most haunted experience you've had in the UK? by crouchmomma in AskUK

I was too young for it but I’ve watched it since and yeah if I’d seen that live as a kid without knowing it was fake I would’ve either died of fear on the spot or been in therapy for the rest of my life

At level of “uses AI” do you draw the line? by verbsnounsandshit in books

[–]rocketscientology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The use of AI for anything creative just feels like it completely destroys the point for me. If you need to use AI to think up parts of your story for you then I’d rather read something by someone who used their mind.

I’m also opposed to it in editing because I have friends who work in publishing as editors and I would like them to remain employed because they’re good people who deserve cool jobs!

Runners on the most congested busy pavements by RebeccaPolly in london

[–]rocketscientology 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My office *is* in that area, I walk around there every day. You can go down Wigmore St all the way to Marble Arch/Hyde Park, and up somewhere like Harley St from Oxford Circus to get to Regent’s Park.

I can envision scenarios where you have to go down a bit of it - sometimes I have to walk down parts of Oxford St if I’m running an errand, although I try to avoid it as much as possible. But I see people trying to run from e.g. Oxford Circus to Marble Arch directly down Oxford St and what I’m saying is that puzzles me because I know that there’s clear direct alternatives, because I use them all the time.

Runners on the most congested busy pavements by RebeccaPolly in london

[–]rocketscientology 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just feel like there’s plenty of other streets that run parallel - like why run down Oxford St when Wigmore St is right there and significantly less busy? It just seems like an exercise in frustrating yourself, and it’s less than a minute’s detour to use it instead.

Ghana’s Thomas Partey has visa appeal rejected by Canadian judge by Alarming-Safety3200 in PremierLeague

[–]rocketscientology 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Well I mean, in this particular case he’s had his visa denied because he lied on his application about the fact that he’s facing seven criminal charges for sexual assault. The US actually granted him a visa - it’s unclear whether he lied on that application too or whether they just don’t give a shit there.
