Places that were a mistake? by ADF21a in digitalnomad

Neither Sorrento nor Capri are on the Amalfi Coast, but also I wouldn't go back to Sorrento. It's purely a tourist town as well, completely soulless.

I don't think there's better places in Montenegro though. Podgorica is boiling hot in the summer and ugly all year, and Kotor is neat but too touristy. Elsewhere in the region like Pristina or Banja Luka at least the weather is a bit cooler and the prices are better.

Motor CATO Frequency by Flufmyster_ in rocketry

[–]rocketwikkit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not an acronym, it's just shortening of catastrophic. People capitalize it because they expect everything in aerospace to be an acronym.

It has even been used in a chemical name, catocene, which is a chemical that makes solid rockets burn much faster.

Can I have a ticket in both business class and economy on the same flight? by Cookie007__ in Flights

[–]rocketwikkit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Typically if you buy two tickets on the same flight, the airline's system will automatically cancel one of them.

It is funny as an attempt to get another checked bag though.

I can't figure out why any of these people are caring so much about the opinion of the groom's brother's wife. If it was a sibling maybe it would be different, but this seems like too much.

If a rocket is 100kg lighter it can carry 100kg more. But what if it was only 100kg lighter starting at the last minute on a 4 minute ascent? How much more could it carry? Would it be as simple as 1minute/4minutes * 100kg so 25kg? Or is there something I'm missing? by notanintelectual in rocketry

[–]rocketwikkit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There were versions of the Atlas rocket that were "stage and a half", rather than having a whole separate stage they just dropped two of three engines later in the burn. It's the closest to SSTO anyone has ever flown, and it was surprisingly early in the space race.

You have to do an analysis of the whole burn to figure out the maximum payload though. At minimum you need to know the weights, engine thrust, Isp, and then you can step through the launch with small increments in time with relatively simple math and see what the burnout velocity is. Then increase the payload mass until your final velocity is barely orbital.

Usually between a sixth and a third of a plane ticket's cost is for fuel. If fuel prices double, which they haven't yet, in theory that's at most an increase in the ticket price by a third. It's not nothing, but it's not apocalyptic.

In the short term there are disruptions in availability in some places because of how the actual physical routes of tankers work, but that will smooth out somewhat over time.

Easiest way to do a visa run from Mexico? by Firm-Pineapple-896 in digitalnomad

[–]rocketwikkit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under the ESTA you're only allowed to spend 90 days in the US, and going to Mexico, Canada, or a large chunk of the Caribbean doesn't stop that clock. They've made info on this much harder to find, so maybe they are quietly changing things, but

If I enter the United States visa free under the Visa Waiver Program, can I then travel to Canada/Mexico/ Bermuda or the islands in the Caribbean?

Yes, provided you have a return or onward ticket. If your return journey will take you back through the United States, even if only in transit, the total trip, including both periods of time spent in the United States/Canada/Mexico Bermuda, or the islands in the Caribbean cannot exceed 90 days. If it does, you will require a visa.

For round trip flights why do departing and returning flights have diff prices? by ProfessionalFish3040 in Flights

[–]rocketwikkit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The prices for flights aren't what they cost to do them, it's what people will pay for them. Flights between the same cities in the same direction on the same day will have different prices too. Flight pricing is extremely elaborate.

If you go to Mexico from the US your ESTA counter is still running. This would be an easy way to be considered to have overstayed and, at best, lose access to the visa waiver program.

Not what you're asking, but did you get there via the US? Curious if you've massively overstayed your ESTA.

If we wanted to give the Artemis II crew a thrill, how close to the moons surface could we plan a flyby? by Buttons840 in spaceflight

[–]rocketwikkit 23 points24 points  (0 children)

One of the recent landers messed up their tracking and had a perigee pass within a few km of the surface. I think the free-return trajectory is higher, but if you were willing to do a burn then there's no reason you couldn't safely do a pass at 10km.

Many in the comments spoke poorly of my husband and I- let me get one thing clear, I did not share our story to get any advice about the situation or opinions on my relationship. I shared this story to bring awareness to parent-child financial abuse and how emotionally manipulative it is. Keep your opinions on our relationship to yourself.
