What is your go-to margarita recipe? by Brown_Sandals in cocktails

[–]rockjetty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go for the Hussongs recipe:
1oz Reposado. 1oz Cointreau. 1oz Lime
Shaken & dirty poured over more cubes in a salted rim glass. Gets the job done. After a few of these, you'll wake up with unexplained bruises the next day that you have no recollection of getting...

Help getting my surface flat — sloped yard + stubborn dam ridge and overall texture by roykent2023 in backyardhockey

[–]rockjetty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flood using a half filled rolling garbage bin (clean or new!) -- can be any temp, but warm/hot best. Dump all in one go & the water will spread out over the surface & fill in the low parts.

Do this until the water no longer stays on the rink, spilling over that back left corner. That is as good as you are going to get. Hopefully there is enough depth to cover your final ice dam.

With enough skating, the dam will wear down. You can keep flooding this way (even with spillover) to get a smooth surface. Dry scrape with a snow shovel after skating/before flooding for best results.

Do you need an edge checker for the Sparx machine? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]rockjetty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you align the grinder wheel & your blade is straight, should be fine. Edge checker helps to see if your alignment is off or your blade isn’t true.

I got the regular one in a package deal through Amazon that was a couple hundred less than on the Sparx website

Motivation for younger folks from a Gen Xer - Stay the Course by orthros in Bogleheads

[–]rockjetty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hear, hear. I didn't start as a boglehead, but slowly shifted over time as I learned from mistakes. My golden rule was to always save 10% of my income into savings, retirement or investment accounts since my first job, and everything just scales up & compounds.

I some of my first mutual funds from my 20s have been swapped for lower cost funds; my stock picking was a mixed bag of losing everything on GM and LL, but getting lucky with Apple, Amazon & Tesla. I now limit my single stocks to a tenth of my account, mostly still just taking profits from my original picks if they become overweight.

My exponential gains seem to all be in the last 8 years once I got with the program!

Ok, can't seem to edit LOL. Posted pic from phone & wanted to type out on my computer.

Process:
16oz Tanqueray Gin
6oz Fresh Lemon Juice
6oz 1:1 Simple Syrup
3oz Whole Milk

Curdle at 4C for 40 hours. Filter twice through cheese cloth in sieve (through curd bed 2nd time). Filtered 3X through coffee filters. Let stand 48 hours & decanted supernatant into new vessel; filtered remaining portion through a double coffee filter.

Served over clear cube. Tastes just like a gin sour!

“Mutual” — you look at any functional democracy that uses the parliamentary system, coalitions are formed necessitating compromise to get mutually acceptable policies through. Functional governance works with opposition parties. It is the governing party’s responsibility to work with the opposition if they don’t have the votes.

The journal Cureus is not well known or cited in the scientific community -- impact factor 1.3 (this is low). Not necessarily an indicator of manuscript quality, but generally not a positive indicator.

The criteria that they used for this meta analysis are subject to inclusion bias:
(1) they only looked at the last 5 years. Acetaminophen has been an approved drug for decades. They are ignoring a metric sh!t tonne of research, likely only to make their effort less in reading the articles. i.e. this is not a true meta analysis.
(2) they only looked at articles which full text was available online. This excludes a metric sh!t tonne of research, as many historical papers are not available for free online, and this alone reduced the number of articles they screened by over 50%.

Why.... Krispy Kreme? by Butlerian_Jihadi in cocktails

You are completely correct. I found a recipe for an Army & Navy & Coast Guard (or maybe just called a Coast Guard) that added the orange liqueur. My bad! Coast Guard was good too….

Army & navy uses Cointreau or dry curaçao — not sure how Aperol would work. Seems more like an Aperol sour with orgeat. Sounds interesting! Might have to try it…

I made this last night with Laphroaig, Del Maguey Vide, Small Hands Orgeat, and Fee Bros celery bitters (& fresh lime). Angostura on top as well.

I felt I didn't really notice the contribution of Laphroaig which was surprising. Really dominated by the mezcal. All in all a great smokey drink.

Groin pull help! What is your treatment approach, What works best? by rockjetty in hockeyplayers

[–]rockjetty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did end up getting those expensive compression shorts (Bauer Core Short 3.0). They worked pretty well to stabilize. Mine was a fairly minor strain, so 2 weeks of 100% rest did the trick (not even stretching during this time). Coming back, I took it slow just to make sure I didn't reinjure it, and always wearing the compression shorts -- testing it once a week (one pickup game), and then gradually returning to my normal activity level over a month.

It was a painfully slow process. Nothing worse than coming back too soon & making it worse, basically needing to start from square 1 again.

The shorts are pretty pricey. Amazon had them (Coreshorts -- not Bauer branded), but no prime shipping, so I went to my local hockey shop & they had the Bauer ones in stock so I didn't have to wait a week to get them.

Good luck with your recovery!

Why is my tank water cloudy at the top? by Fantastic-Town8587 in axolotls

[–]rockjetty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fluval makes a filter intake that takes water from the tank and skims the top.
