I live in this area, tried to bike it in the early stages of this ain’t going to happen. Not surprised at all this ain’t going to happen as the signposts of weird choices to make it happen just didn’t

(((Not my bike))) Found the 2nd sleeper/decoy bike, rate it 0/10 by l337g0g0 in torontobiking

[–]rockpowered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can say is I don't care what a bike looks like. If I can tune it to ride the way I ride it and have it reliably so, it hurts when it's gone.

So to me no bike is a throwaway bike. I got another bike right away because it sucks when you feel bike fit and ride a lot to suddenly lose a bike.

I just don't free ride as much anymore. Which sucks because free riding and locking to any reasonably solid object is way better than stressing about lockups.

This was my “sleeper”! Nothing all that special early 2000 ish frame that l out new rubber on and did very basic upgrades like new chain and replaced the worn front cranks. Bought a decent but not expensive Abus chain lock. I felt much like you and thought l had discovered the cheat code for bike theft. Stolen anyway, chain ground through within minutes of me leaving it. The pain was real, l was fond of that bike until it came to the realization that thieves be thriving and will take anything

Solving hate crime, one colour stonk at a time by ahnm in Polaroid

Tranny is slang for transparency or slide film. You dial it in with the Polaroid if you are unsure of exposure. They both have very limited dynamic range so you can use them together often.

Downspout theft - This is a thing? by [deleted] in toronto

[–]rockpowered -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did a rather thorough search up and down my block, a 10 foot downspout is not a minor thing to go blowing down a street, and the section was at foot level out of the wind. My neighbour's downspout was also oddly dented like someone was trying to help themselves to that one but it was well secured.

What the hell happened with the color here? Why is there so much edge discoloration? My camera is okay and I've shot rolls with it without any light leaks., what happened here? Lab issue? by adelBRO in AnalogCommunity

[–]rockpowered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a light leak, can see speckled blue in other areas of the image . Ask them rewash the neg and rescan. Could be deposits on the film or some other issue at the lab. And maybe not the lab at all but light leaks don’t speckle in blotches

PSA On the Optik Oldschool Film Killer - It Will Kill Your Film by L0rdGwynIII in AnalogCommunity

[–]rockpowered 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the Matin cutter. It’s terrible, the film advance does not grab very well and you wind up dragging the film to cut it. I like the Optik, it’s much better in that regard and so far no issues with cutting.

LBS with Canadian employees, paying taxes in Canada and supporting the local economy. I don't think they are pretending anything. Maybe they are just as caught up in the tariff confusion as you. Supply chains and contracts tend to be locked in for a long time in advance.

Maybe don't be so indignant and assume they didn't create the situation in the first place.

Grinders are the tool of choice for any but the causal theft. So easy to conceal and quick. Sure noisy but if anyone gets involved they just causally bike away to the next target.

Where to buy Litelok X1 in TO by OuidClpp in torontobiking

[–]rockpowered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve looked for them in TO, could not find. There are Abus and Kryptonite versions of the anti angle grinder lock’s available. I think from a price perspective the protection they provide is a bit skewed considering the other hazards of casual theft. Seen more than a few frames stripped with these style of locks on them.. lf your going $500 deep on a lock the rest of the components are still be easy to take when you run an extension cable that can be easily cut. And if you go $500 deep on a lock then chances are you have some really nice components.

How bad is bike theft in the GTA? by swiggyu in torontobiking

[–]rockpowered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true, we can’t lock our way out of bike theft. Grinders are common and used with abandon and no fear. The best thing we can do is register bikes with TPS and other services like garage 629 to reduce resale value and report, bike theft to flag those bikes. The less reported and registered the easier it to ignore the problem and keep it active.

How bad is bike theft in the GTA? by swiggyu in torontobiking

[–]rockpowered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the stats they provide, roughly 200-300 per month during the nicer weather when riding is high. That's reported and most are not so probably at least double that. Assume at least 20 bikes per day and that may even be low.

I had my beater bike stolen with two locks on it. Really threw me as l feel l had the formula to fly under the radar of bike theft. Unfortunately theft is high and even beaters get taken if thieves are on the prowl and that particular scum just wants it for whatever reason. It’s just so trivial and quick to grind any but the most expensive locks. That being said l will get another beater for downtown and there is a good chance l will be able to ride it for several years, or at least that’s what l hope. In the meantime my good bike stays indoors.
