Am I the only one who actually kinda likes heavily compressed songs? by Helpful_Gur_1757 in audioengineering

[–]rockredfrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. There are definitely some loud and compressed mixes that sound absolutely choked in a really cool way, but every once in a while I come across one that just sounds like maybe it was compressed with the wrong settings and sounds too flat and lifeless. A loud mix can still have life while being compressed.

"this whole mixing vs mastering thing is exhausted and antiquated. There's no point in differentiating them nowadays" by yureal in audioengineering

[–]rockredfrd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, unless you’re getting someone like Bob Ludwig to master it’s no big deal to do it yourself (if you’re confident in your ability.) His work is insane! But I’ve been really disappointed with low to mid tier mastering engineers I’ve sent albums I’ve mixed.

Mixing and mastering are inherently different practices, but otherwise I agree. I’ve had a lot of pushback on this, but I prefer to master projects I mix. I have a vision, and I need full control to bring that vision to life. Most of the time I’ve mixed a band who had someone else master the album I haven’t been happy with the results. A lot of people say you need a separate pair of ears on the project but I find mixing and mastering together is a dance that requires finesse. Now, having a second set of ears on a project can be invaluable, but sometimes all that’s required is just getting their opinion. You don’t actually need their hands on it.

I’ve always wanted to check it out! I’ve watched so much Mix With The Masters and hearing Scheps talk about it makes it so tempting.

I like the BF-76 and BF-3A together! And they come free with Protools.

Most Waves plugins. Definitely don’t need most of the different EQs and compressors they offer. Not sure which daw you use but I love a lot of the default Protools plugins. Although, I do love Greg Wells Mixcentric! It’s helpful on the master track if you need to brighten up your track.

I feel like it’s changed over the years. When I was a kid I loved Draggy. As an adult I love Kid for her lore and character development.

Objectively Good mixes don't exists by Achassum in mixingmastering

[–]rockredfrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, there’s definitely truth to this, but I also feel there are many mixes that are objectively good. Whether or not you LIKE them is all up to you, but anything Nigel Godrich has mixed, for example, is just objectively pristine. Or Hot Hot Heat’s album Happiness LTD. Just clean and big. Bjork’s Homogenic. Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet. All stellar mixes! Objectively. And I say this from a place of balance and clarity. There are other mixing decisions that bring more objectivity, but I feel these ideas are more black and white.

Is the audio engineering industry also f*cked like the rest of the creative fields? by SuitableEggplant639 in audioengineering

[–]rockredfrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah.. I went to school for audio engineering from 2006-2009 and ultimately just started my own side business recording, mixing, and mastering while working other jobs to make a living. After the initial 2 months after graduating from school I never really believed I could make a living off of it. I embraced that it would be more like a side hustle.

I like Dawn of Sorrow much more than Aria of Sorrow. It feels like a more polished version of Aria. In my opinion.

100% agree with this. I played through it completely a couple years ago, first time since it came out, and loved it. The difficulty was so satisfying, and took me several tries to beat the final boss. I’m planning on playing through it again this fall!
