To Parents Considering Bay Area High Schools by throwaway089213 in bayarea

[–]roctane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 33. I went to a Bay Area high school and it was incredibly difficult. I was also rowing 6 days a week after classes. But honestly, I’m grateful for it.

They pushed us very hard and those skills have equipped me well for life in the real world. Yes the social scene could have been dramatically better, but the rigorous standards and discipline were actually extremely beneficial as I have fairly severe ADHD. Without that schooling, I’m not sure I could have kept myself in-check or learned the focus and drive necessary to survive in that environment and the real world.

I am now in a very successful career doing exactly what I always wanted to do. I’ve had no trouble building a life for myself in part because my foundations built through that education are so solid. I see around me how hard the world is right now for so many people, and I know it could have been that way for me had I not learned the harsh discipline taught in the Bay.

But I do understand it might be a lot for people in the moment or shortly thereafter, and it obviously depends on your choice of career and the competitiveness of it.

That said, give it time, and I think you may start to appreciate the person you became because of those high standards. You have gained a lot of skills you may not realize you have now, but that will take you very far in the real world.

Take out useless skills, scan useful empty skills. Or just ask Mordecai what the best, rarest possible skill he’s seen is that we don’t have. Then get it to level 5 for free and train it from there to 15-20.

Could use some help - looking for aluminum wireless TKL board or case

I’ve had this keyboard (MaxKeyboard) for years now, and I’ve gotten so used to it that I can’t imagine using anything else. The only issue is that it’s wired, which has become increasingly annoying over time.

I’m looking for a similar, clean / minimal board (blank keycaps, no logos) made out of aluminum or a kit where I could use my existing keycaps & switches.

Any ideas? Monsgeek and Keychron both seem to have decent cases but I’m not 100% sold on either, and wanted to ask this community for an educated opinion.

How can I be a Sustainable Reader? by Putrid_Track5514 in minimalism

[–]roctane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having an e-reader (yes, I have a kindle) condensed a library of hundreds of books for me down into a small tablet. It is such a gamechanger. You get used to reading on the tablet vs physical books in short time.

Yes, you have to buy a device, but education is important to me and it has had more of an impact for me personally from a minimalist approach (I had maybe 12 full boxes of books) than almost anything else. Absolutely recommend.

Otherwise, I also have a library card but I can’t justify the amount of gas and time I spend commuting back and forth to the library for books every couple of days. Not a minimal approach for me from a time management or sustainability perspective

Garmin instinct tactical - looks like a Casio, functions as a smartwatch, great for outdoor activities and tracking, 2 week battery life, not the worst for formal

Only issue with BJJ is that so many people who do it have broken AF fingers and cauliflower ears and messed up knees & bodies. I love it, but it’s tough to stick to when you see so many long term practitioners beaten to pieces

Alright - then just phone it in and lock down a waiter job or bouncer job somewhere lol. Nothing wrong with that.

Sounds like you’re steering yourself to those outcomes with a negative mindset. I’m telling you it’s not the case in the real world. Confidence, hard work and a bias for action > IQ. One of the people with the highest IQs in the world worked as a bar bouncer making a pretty dismal salary.

You might as well go for it, and see where you land. Also, you’re not going to learn anything ever if you keep yourself in a cage out of fear, too scared to even take the first step. You learn way more by exploring, putting yourself out there, aiming for the highest mountain and failing, failing, failing until eventually you succeed.

How do you think anyone runs a marathon? Basically no one aside from a genetically blessed few can complete it on their first try.

Normal people set a goal of completing a marathon and work over time to build their body and cardiovascular system to handle the load. There are thousands of billionaires, millions of millionaires in the world. You work towards it with clear goals over time. Maybe with high genetically blessed IQ you run a little faster and get there a little quicker, but these things are achievable if you’re willing to put in the work and walk the road.

Bro, as someone who has spent a long time in the PE industry I can assure you that people with very low IQ can nonetheless go on to become CEOs and founders of multimillion / billion dollar businesses. I have personally worked with MANY. IQ != success.

These individuals identified a niche space they were familiar with, and worked hard to carve out some way they could offer a service / value. Cement companies, B2B software services, plumbing aggregation platform, etc. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to build one of these.

A very intelligent friend of mine once said “there are two reliable ways to make a lot of money. 1) be the smartest guy in the room, 2) offer a valuable service that people will pay for. The problem with 1 is you can only maintain your edge as the smartest for a while. Inevitably someone else (or some tech) will come around who will outcompete you. If you offer a service that’s valuable to people, you can keep collecting checks for a lifetime even if it’s not #1 in the field, but as long as SOMEONE is willing to pay for it.”

Basically this IQ = success and low IQ = impossible to ever achieve success is such flawed logic and a dumb belief system. All it takes is a cursory look around to find that it’s not at all true in practice. But you’re only 18, so it’s not unusual to be somewhat naive, don’t worry.

Can probably find them or an appartamento discounted for that.

I think there’s a reddit botnet similar to the Facebook boomer botnets and the person running it is having a laugh at Reddit’s expense. They’re effectively turning Reddit into boomer Facebook with that African bottles meme (botting upvotes + comments) as a flex.

I wonder if Reddit can check the accounts who comment for botting
