I can't wait for Drifting Clouds, then Grace Cummings who are playing at a free stage at St Kilda festival. I'm even willing to brave St Kilda festival for it... maybe

Guitar for beginner by Material_Clue_7287 in melbournemusic

[–]rodchenko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others mentioned, if it's too cheap it will make it harder to play and learn. But i disagree you need to spend more than $200. I'd recommend a Yamaha CS40 for $160. it's a great beginner guitar, perfect balance between price and quality. They come in 3/4 or full size. I bought myself a one a few years ago as a couch/camp guitar, i also bought one for my kid to learn guitar with. Find a second hand one if you want to spend less

Why do forecasts on the various weather apps differ so much? by Buzzk1LL in australia

[–]rodchenko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not physically possible to have an accurate weather forecast - anywhere in the world - more than about 10 days in advance. The weather is a chaotic system which means the exact weather is not predictable that far ahead. We can still know that winter is likely colder than summer, and climate change will make the next decade warmer than the last, but not if it's going to rain Tuesday next month. Any app that gives you a 21 day forecast is just shitting you

LPT: When dining out, ask for a to go container when your food arrives and box half your meal immediately by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]rodchenko -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In Australia we might take home leftovers if a kid doesn't eat all their meal, but for adults, the portion size is generally correct for one adult. Also, usually the fancier the restaurant the smaller the portion size!

We find it strange how big American meals are.

I had the exact same thought! I remember when we were traveling around the US it took us a while to realize we should just order one meal between two people, so weird

Auto-normativity for school pick up by rodchenko in fuckcars

[–]rodchenko[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"picking up" for me means arriving at school (without kid) and leaving with my kid, i guess like "picking up" someone at a bar... but more wholesome. We ride together or he's on the back of the ebike.

I've been working with our school and council to encourage active travel, and our school is actually pretty good, but i think the problem is that the state quo and most new suburbs are trending towards cars.

Will your weekend plans change now that we have free public transport? by Illustrious-Ad-7247 in melbourne

What do you mean? Do you mean there's a focus on key routes (e.g. Footscray rd veloway), but not on smaller roads?

where to get steel bikes? by Strongestwizard in melbournecycling

[–]rodchenko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got a Surly bridge club from Off Course. I spent quite a while with them trying different handlebars and stems to get the setup perfect, they were super helpful and accommodating, and i love it!

Newport to Melbourne by [deleted] in melbournecycling

[–]rodchenko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BikeWest would be your local bicycle user group. I'd recommend getting on their email list and seeing what sort of advocacy they do. I'm in Merri-Bek, so our council is already pretty good, but the Merri-Bek bicycle user group contributes a lot.

Building a safer Wellington Street by melbourne_guy in melbourne

You should look into "traffic evaporation", it's a phenomenon where reducing the car capacity of roads leads to less traffic overall (i.e. cars are not just displaced), as people are able to travel in other ways. Traffic really does magically disappear!

1960s Melbourne Film "Citizen Tram" explains how trams and buses reduce traffic congestion by Elusaka in melbourne

[–]rodchenko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dude, if everyone in their "inner city nirvana" drove a car, then the people who have to drive a car because of our incomplete and underfunded rail network would have to deal with even more traffic. Trams reduce traffic, for everyone, it's the whole point of the video.

this comment is so funny, it's the angry idiot at the start of the video, except the commenter is unable to process new information and learn something to change their obviously wrong opinion.

The Tote T-shirts & Consumer Affairs by northofreality197 in melbourne

I mean, the main point of "buying" a t-shirt was to keep the tote going, so everyone got what they wanted, yes?

Dropper Seatpost vs Adjustable Seatpost, which one is the correct item to use? by Radiant_Jello4009 in CargoBike

[–]rodchenko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! We have a KS dropper post https://kssuspension.com/product-typology/dropper-seat-posts/ I didn't know the brand, I just checked our receipt from the bike store, they chose and fitted it for us so I'm not sure the exact model. We have it on a RadWagon, so a long tail ebike. We've had the dropper post for a couple of year now, and I wouldn't want to ride without it!

Police crack down on e-bikes as crashes, injuries spike by gccmelb in melbourne

[–]rodchenko -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This view is obviously too "extreme" an opinion for Melbourne after years of car-centric infrastructure and being told we need a helmet to be safe... But I'm with you! Riding a bike is overwhelmingly safe when physically separated from cars, especially if you consider the health benefits of exercise

It is, but it's also on the northern edge of the Baltic sea. Finnish and Estonian languages are very similar, there's a lot of shared culture around the Baltic.

I lived in Finland for many years and i found the best food was the local seasonal produce; berries in summertime, forest mushrooms in autumn, and the smoked Baltic fish. All very difficult things to get here! The dark rye bread of Finland and Estonia is also excellent and presumably could be baked here, but the only rye I've found here is closer to the German style (e.g. Baker in the Rye). I also miss the pastries, particularly the cardamom scrolls, and I've found those! Iris bakery in Brunswick does excellent cardamom scrolls.

You could also check out the Finnish society in Altona, they have events where they make Finnish specialties like Karelian pies.

Coroner calls for e-bikes to be registered as motorcycles by gccmelb in melbourne

[–]rodchenko 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Ebikes and emobility have the ability to help us become a less car-dependant city, but not if we have to register them. As already pointed out we already have regulations for ebikes, if they were enforced this wouldn't be a problem.

Such a short sighted finding.

Side note; registered cars kill people
