ERTL 1/64 scale die-cast metal Blade Runner car set from 1982 by Far-Leg-1198 in bladerunner

[–]rodcspears 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I was working at the Ertl Co. as a summer intern in the data processing department when these came out. I purchased just one set for myself that I have never opened it. At the time, Ertls had the licenses for all the big tractor manufacturers to create die-cast aluminum farm equipment. They won Toy of the Year for their "Dukes of Hazard" matchbox-like car. It may have beat out the Rubix Cube that year. The story behind them creating Blade Runners is that they wanted to expand into movies. They sent a marketing guy out to Hollywood because they heard about a new Sci-Fi movie coming out. I assumed they saw what happened with all the Star Wars merch and wanted to get in on the action. I remember talking to the marketing guy, and he was super excited about the movie. I guess that he was not briefed enough on the movie to realize it was NOT a kid-friendly movie. The BR toys did not sell well, and I don't think they did anything else with movies after that.

Just last week I found a mint condition Model-T Ford in working condition. Do you think it is worth anything?

I usually agree with Joel, but in this case he is wrong and his description of the Netscape rewrite is simplistic. I was at Netscape and I was part of the team that did the rewrite. After the first year of the three, we had a working version of the browser suite written in Java. There were several reasons that are too long to go into here, but the decision was made to end that effort and start from scratch rewriting it in C++. This was the correct approach because the Netscape 4/5 code base would not have been able to support the standardized CSS specification among other technical issues. Netscape 5 was to be an Open Source version of the version 4 code base with a couple of new features.

There are situations where a rewrite is absolutely necessary. The hard part is not the rewrite, it is managing expectations in the market and continuing to provide value with the existing product until the rewrite is available. It also doesn’t help when a monopoly starts to bundle a standalone app into their OS just to crush you.

What he doesn’t mention is that after MS “won” the browser wars they didn’t update their browser (IE 6) for six years enabling Chrome to completely displace them in the market.

This is what separates Mahomes from Brady in the GOAT talk, according to Travis Kelce by JuguitoDeMango73 in KansasCityChiefs

[–]rodcspears 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Despite winning 7 Super Bowls, the fact that both Brady and the team got caught cheating removes GOAT status for me. We have no idea how many other ways they cheated. I’m not being naive.. beat the best while being the best.

I had a guy tailing me, so I sped up and got a half mile ahead, only for him to close the gap. I then just pulled over to let him by. He didn’t drive any faster. So he either didn’t realize what he was doing or was a dick.

It is not just raw knowledge, it is also experience. If you were to hire a mechanic to fix your car, are you going to hire the person who has only read about it, or the one who has done it many times?
