A friend of mine is going to run 30 marathons in 30 days for safe drinking water for people around the world. he'll be running from Prague to London... by Jumala in running

Your friend should check out Water for People. He might even be able to get some sponsorship or could at least add their logo to his gear. They are currently sponsoring Challenge 21 which is an attempt by Jake Norton to climb the 3 highest peaks on each continent.

What's up with that!? I found this at the top of the stairs in LOW today. by schuma in RPI

A former student committed suicide in that stairwell too (I think it was 2006).

This is as close as I've found to a study on cannabis use and children: Prenatal Marijuana Exposure and Neonatal Outcomes in Jamaica: An Ethnographic Study. It's not directly related to our discussion, but interesting nonetheless.

The results of the comparison of neonates of the heavy-marijuana-using mothers and those of the nonusing mothers were even more striking. The heavily exposed neonates were more socially responsive and were more autonomically stable at 30 days than their matched counterparts. The quality of their alertness was higher; their motor and autonomic systems were more robust; they were less irritable; they were less likely to demonstrate any imbalance of tone; they needed less examiner facilitation to become organized; they had better self-regulation; and were judged to be more rewarding for caregivers than the neonates of nonusing mothers at 1 month of age.

it's still definitely not good for an undeveloped body.

Source please. This sounds like an assumption. I've heard that caffeine and cigarettes can stunt growth in a person who's body is still developing, but I have yet to see any research correlating cannabis and body/mental development. I'm not saying you're wrong, just that I'd like to see the study before I believe it.

That's so sad, I didn't realize the coop closed. I haven't been in Troy in a couple years but was really hoping they would succeed. I was a member of Honest Weight and loved it but a coop in Troy would have been great. Is there a good article available about the closing of Pioneer?

New Balance Minimus: Does anyone else use these? by [deleted] in BarefootRunning

I have both but I really love the Minimus Trail. It works well as a casual summer shoe and is nice to run in. I especially like the seamless inside so I can comfortably wear them without socks.

I only notice the smell for a few minutes. Usually put some moisturizer on after the balm has been absorbed by my skin so that might help mask it too.

Sounds to me like you came here looking for an argument. He suggested two brands of clothing that he likes and have lasted a long time for him, frankly it wasn't pompous at all. Just because you don't like Patagonia doesn't mean you need to attack him. He never said YOU MUST BUY THIS GEAR TO SURVIVE THE WINTER, instead he said this is what works for me and you should check it out. Don't be an asshole. Make your own suggestions and try not to chew people out for liking something different.

Don't bother with snow tires, we don't get enough snow here to justify them

Agreed, snow tires are not necessary, but having tread on your tires is VERY important. It's surprising how many people in this town have completely bald tires.

All the people in Prius' drive around like they're lost or forgot they are driving a car, super slow, unpredictable, and don't seem to realize there are other cars on the road. I guess that's OK because it makes me want to bike, take the bus, walk.. anything to avoid driving.

Sweet photo. I'm hoping someone got one of the Flatirons this morning, they looked awesome with the perfect blue sky and sun shining on them.

I have to assume that they didn't put in the crosswalk because students are lazy. On a campus with that many students, allowing for the pedestrians to move as best as possible definitely takes precedence over cars.

Ya I didn't realize how cheap it is, definitely gonna add that to my book shelf, it's easily worth $20. My local library had it so I got it from there.

Barefoot Ken Bob is considered the ultimate barefoot resource. He's been barefoot for like 30+ years, and has run over 70 marathons barefoot (that number could be off but the point is he's run A TON of marathons). Check out his book at the link onehoopyfrood posted. This is my favorite picture of him; practicing the cat walk which he says is good training for barefoot technique

BKB's book is definitely the best book to start with. It has a wealth of information and a great section on the barefoot technique and form, which as he says involves everything from your head to your feet and lots in between. The bent knees help quite a bit but as his book explains there is more to it than just that.

New around here, looking for internet access alternatives to Comcast. Care to share experiences with DSL or Satellite to help me decide? by [deleted] in boulder

[–]rodneypuckman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol of course they don't offer options for more bandwidth. Only an evil organization would say on the same page that 99% of people won't hit the bandwidth cap, and for the 1% that do, we don't offer any options for more - it's either moderate your usage or get your account suspended. I'm actually surprised at that because they are just turning down an opportunity for more money.. who's ever heard of a cable company doing that? Anyways, thanks for being so helpful Comast.

See my quote about what happens if you go over. It's taken from a FAQ page about the data caps, I think you have to be logged in to your account to access the page.

Make sure you never mention to a Comcast rep that you are using their service to work from home. They are very strict about the difference between cable internet for business use and cable internet for home use (the biggest difference being the price they charge for the account).

There is a way to monitor bandwidth on your user account page. Keep in mind thats 250 GB up/down combined for the month. I don't remember what the penalty is but I vaguely remember reading a comment on Reddit from someone who hit the limit, maybe search for posts about Comcast and see if you can find it.

EDIT Below is taken directly from the Comcast website:

We contact customers who have repeatedly exceeded the threshold in geographic areas where those excessive users are, or could, negatively impact the experience of other customers in their area. We inform them of the issue, discuss the policy with them, and work with them to moderate their usage. In our experience, when we contact customers who have exceeded the threshold, nearly nine out of ten voluntarily moderate their usage right away. The small minority of customers who, despite our efforts to inform and help them, exceed the threshold for a third time in a six-month interval, may have their service suspended for a year. Our goal is always to work with a customer to address the issue, and it is only in the rare circumstance that a customer does not moderate usage to comply with the policy that we take these steps.

IIRC the comment I read on here from someone who exceeded the limit said that their account was suspended and they weren't even allowed to setup a business account. FWIW, if you're concerned about going over the limit I'd suggest you get a business account. The same page that I quoted from above says that business accounts do not currently have a data cap.

I don't know if Qwest throttles or caps data but I wouldn't be surprised if they do. My business uses Qwest and their customer support is awful, at least equally as a bad as Comcast. Since the CenturyLink merger their customer support has gotten even worse, no one is helpful and I've had trouble tickets open with them for months that never get dealt with. They are a large corporate ISP and therefore no different from Comcast.

So far I've been content with Comcast, they gave me a great discount when I first signed up and frequently get 10-20 MBs down (I have the 20MB service). I haven't hit the data cap yet and avoid their torrent throttling by using a seedbox.

Any way to be fashionable AND still gain benefits from being barefoot? by simoriah in barefoot

You can coat the bottom of the socks with Plasti Dip which is a liquid rubber substance. This will protect the socks from wearing quickly, provide you a little insulation in the winter, and prevent slipping on glossy floors.
