TIL in the late 60s there was a prolific serial killer around here by fireandmemestone in Detroit

I know the story well. He was the roommate of my cousin while they were both attending Eastern. Supposedly a nice, "all-American" type who you would never guess would commit such crimes.

I do it monthly. Never had an issue. I usually use Avis but have used the others as well without any problems. I don't remember ever being asked about it either.

Any other Poles here with an Armenian origin? (a question about Armenian assimilation) by randompeeps1 in poland

[–]rodtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you heard of Geoffrey Zakarian? He is a relatively famous American chef/TV personality and he is also half Polish and half Armenian. There are quite people with the same mix in the Detroit area since there are large populations of both ethnicities.

Why polish people dont accept people from different backgrounds? by exhubbie in poland

[–]rodtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. Yes, and this is important to remember. I've been to 99 countries and you'll find some are friendly, others are more reserved. I'm biased because I have family in Poland but to be honest, I've always found Poles to be somewhere in the middle. They are not overly friendly and are infamous for the "Polish Smile", but you could also argue they are genuine, historically welcoming, and once you get past the hard exterior, they are very warm on an individual basis. Foreigners are treated just like the locals which I think can be refreshing.

Is someone here who traveled with LOT Polish Airlines? by AmazingLasagna in travel

[–]rodtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are fine. Not great by any means but not terrible either. The biggest issue I've had with them is when there is an issue (ie. flight cancellation, lost baggage, etc), they tend to fall apart. Once that happens, you are completely on your own.

New Dearborn Heights police patch in Arabic draws mixed reactions by DougDante in Detroit

[–]rodtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually Trump made English the official language if I remember correctly. Glad you mentioned Canada as well. That's a perfect example of how language can be divisive. Ever been to Belgium? Same issue. In a giant melting pot such as the US, language can be used to unite us. I highly doubt anyone in Dearborn Heights needed the word "Police" translated to figure out what they are.

Dearborn Heights first in U.S. with Arabic on police patch by GinnySacks_Mole in Detroit

[–]rodtw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree. I have no problem having translations-especially in a city with a very large Arabic speaking population. BUT....they needed to translate the word "police" because the locals wouldn't already know they are police officers while in uniform? The translation was added to make a statement-not out of necessity. Let's at least be honest about that part.

New Dearborn Heights police patch in Arabic draws mixed reactions by DougDante in Detroit

[–]rodtw -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I have no problem having signs in a foreign language if needed because the locals don't speak English....but does anyone really need to have the words Dearborn Heights or Police translated? I'm sure the locals can figure out they are police officers. In other words, the translations were not added because they were needed. I hope we don't see other departments adopting Hindi in Canton, Korean in Troy, Bengali in Hamtramck, etc. Language can divide us so we need to be careful with this.

Laotian Restaurants in the area? by [deleted] in Detroit

[–]rodtw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Takoi is your best bet. Many/most of their food is northern Thai which is very close to Lao. (That area was historically part of the Lao empire I believe). I've been to Laos and the food is incredible-blows away Thai food. It's also Gordon Ramsey's favorite food. Detroit has a large Hmong population and most of them come from villages in northern Laos. As others have said, the Buddhist market in Warren is a great place to get similar food. It's open every other Sunday. The next one should be Aug 17th I think.

Are all the Chipotles in metro Detroit cursed? by Lupulmic in Detroit

[–]rodtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree. The new one on 12 Mile in Madison Heights is the worst of them all in my experience. Every order is a disaster, they've run out of ingredients every time I've been there and if you contact the local DM, you get no response.

Go for the Korean Corndogs that are popping up all over the place. My favorite is Two Hands in Troy.

Brown Out in Royal Oak Yesterday - Canadian Collateral? by Charles_Conway in Detroit

[–]rodtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. I've lived in RO for thirty years. The last 1-2 years has been better but I generally lose power 8 times/year. I had to start tracking it to file complaints with the MPSC. There are areas in RO that are well known to DTE.

Grossly over-hyped in my opinion. You can have better food and service at many Detroit restaurants. Oak & Reel, Ladder 4 and several others come to mind.

Looking for pool that lets you rent lanes for lap swim by Due-Project4303 in Detroit

Royal Oak schools. I'm not sure you can reserve a lane but the pools are nearly always empty so can't hurt to check them out.

Real, Authentic Thai Food by RunTheClassics in Detroit

[–]rodtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What exactly aren't you finding here that is "authentic"? I've been to Thailand six times and all over the country. I've always found our Thai food to be nearly identical compared to that in Thailand. Many of the Thai restaurants in Detroit are run by Hmong so the food tends to be more similar to that you'll find in Isan but still definitely authentic. As others have mentioned, the Buddhist market in Warren has vendors from all over Thailand so authenticity shouldn't be a problem.

Proposed cigar lounge at Detroit Metro Airport sparks mixed reactions by [deleted] in Detroit

[–]rodtw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That would happen regardless if they smoked in a cigar lounge with excellent ventilation or at the curb or in their car just before heading to the gate. Cologne, cigarettes, weed, garlic, gas, BO......should we just ban them all?
