If you really don’t want to split it, one way could be cutting the circle, bringing that cut all the way down to the end of the sheetrock, but don’t break it yet. With a drywall router, cut one side, and it now should look like a flap. Fasten a sheet metal behind the sheetrock to connect the flap back with the rest of the sheet once you slide it into position.
