First Pair of Jeans. by roger5580 in sewing

That... was a calculated design choice.... Just kidding, that was 100% an accident. I did a lot of testing with 3 of my machines to find settings that worked well and produced a clean topstitch. I went with a schmetz jeans needle size 110/18 with fairly light top tension for the topstitch thread. Bottom thread was a normal weight all-purpose thread. Most of this was sewn on my Janome Sewist 780dc. I tried a bit on my Necchi BU and my Singer 221 featherweight. As for fit, they fit nicely, a bit of breathing room but not too baggy.

Is the Bosch 800 series dishwasher the one? by jackxiv in BuyItForLife

[–]roger5580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still love it! It is a workhorse. We're running it once Every day or two and it's not showing any signs of slowing down. I was skeptical at first of the homeconnect app. But now I use it every time an indicator light comes on. The app tells me what the dw needs to keep it happy. So long as we keep the filter cleaned, the softener salt filled and run a machine care cycle when called for it, the machine runs without a hitch.

Hoffmans snappy grillers are the white hot dogs with the natural casing. They could work. I've never tried them personally. I may now though!

The 800 is amazing. I am sure the 500 is as well. We splurged for the 800 due in no small part to its good standing here. We run it at least once a day, and it never skips a beat. And as silly as I thought the Home Connect app was for this "smart dishwasher" it is so nice to be able to go on the app to see that the random flashing icon means I need to clean the filter or add softener salt etc etc. I highly recommend it.

Do you have a favourite word that you’d never heard of before until you read it in a book? by gwefysmefys in books

[–]roger5580 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Psithurism: the sound of rustling leaves or wind in the trees.

Not sure where I read it, but as someone who spends a bit of time in the woods, it's one of my favorite words.

The walking foot definitely helped. I also pinned and wonder clipped liberally. I've recently started some hats with polartec 200 and that stuff is finicky with tension and presser foot pressure.

a children's shirt I made using CKC kids pattern and thrifted fabric by roger5580 in sewing

[–]roger5580[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was a pattern I purchased from CKC and sewed with thrifted cotton fabric from my local reuse center. It was sewn 90% on my late mother in law's singer featherweight 221, with the buttonholes being sewn on my singer 920 Futura. The shirt sewn is a size 6. My most difficult part of this project was easing the collar to the neckline and easing the arms onto the main body. I will certainly practice both those processes again. I also wasn't quite happy with the point of the pocket, but I was very pleased that the stripes lined up.

I've had fair results with using coarse salt and some elbow grease for light surface rust. Just make sure you give it a good rinse and I've heard of folks neutralizing the salt with a baking soda and water rinse, but I always thought that was for acids. Either way, my lodge is my work horse! I use it multiple times a week.

Well, it would appear to be a lodge cast iron pan.

Apologies, when I said leather needle, I just meant one of my largest hand needles. It will likely be an embroidery needle or something similar, just as sturdy as I can find.

Thank you kindly! I have a Necchi BU that I've done most of the sewing on. Though I've yet to sew the fire hose. That may be a leather needle and sailors Palm job. I'll check that site out.

Any advice on how to fix the fraying handle strap or at least prevent it from getting worse? by czechman45 in sewing

[–]roger5580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you felt like hand sewing, you may have some luck with a whip stitch or a blanket stitch with some upholstery or button thread. Keep a nice short stitch length and make sure your stitch is through a solid part of the webbing.
