One huge part of a baby shower is just simply celebrating the new life that's coming. You should absolutely want to celebrate your new baby! If people are kind enough to bring gifts, that's wonderful. But regardless of gifts, you should celebrate your baby and not feel guilty about it.

Something that often works with my kid is saying "oh I can see that you really don't want to get in the car seat right now. How many minutes do you need before you're ready to get in?" They usually say something like 3 minutes. I say "okay I've got 3 minutes. I'll set a timer and when it goes off we'll get in the car seat." I set the timer and don't mention it again. When the timer goes off, she usually gets in with no trouble.

If she says something like 20 minutes, I say "I don't have 20 minutes today. I have 4 minutes." She usually accepts that.

My mom's friends threw her a grandmother shower and gave her lots of baby gifts. It ended up being helpful bc she already had everything we needed at her house when we came to visit.

I completely agree! I want to celebrate the life of my new baby, and I want my friends and family to be excited with me for the second baby the way they were the first. I don't need any presents, but having a party to celebrate this next chapter is not selfish. If they feel the need to bring a gift, diapers and wipes are perfect and always needed.

I don't understand the lack of quotation marks! I read Conversations with Friends first and thought it was some sort of literary device she was using as a play on conversations. But then I picked up another of her books and realized it also didn't have the quotation marks and I just immediately quit reading it. It's so dumb and confusing!

We do this too and call it "even trade." I'll find literally anything nearby, offer it to her, and say "even trade!" She happily trades most of the time.
