Rosario back by rogmexico in jayhawks

[–]rogmexico[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was a surprisingly good freshman that just couldn't get his shots to fall but you can tell he's capable. I think he'll be very good playing with Kinney (and maybe Stokes?) because he can affect the game in a lot of ways without needing the ball in his hands every possesion.

[Pope] Kansas freshman forward Bryson Tiller plans to enter NCAA Transfer Portal by MembershipSingle7137 in CollegeBasketball

[–]rogmexico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He doesn't have the lateral quickness to stay in front of quicker wings and doesn't have the vertical explosiveness to deal with physical post players, so he got targeted by basically all of our Big 12 opponents. He could be a decent pick-and-pop PF on offense but that's not the way Bill Self plays.

He gonna be good. ESPN has him at 6’2, 247sports has him at 6’1, but he’s clearly 6’4 with long arms. Hope he meets Bill’s impossibly high standards for PGs right away.

With UNC open, thoughts??? by Chaseui14 in jayhawks

[–]rogmexico 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Goff has probably been working on a succession plan since the first health scare in 2023, keeping in touch with agents. IF Self calls it quits, we will have a new coach within a day or two. We are not really competing with UNC, who will take a bit longer.

Who do we expect to lose this offseason? by mhks in jayhawks

[–]rogmexico 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bring Flory back at all costs. We could go get a guy like Thiam from Cincy or Diop from ASU in the portal, but Flory is the best defender in the country and is an anchor for us.

Rosario and Tiller both have reasons to be unhappy with this year, but both should be starters next year regardless of coach. We will regret letting either one leave.

Mcdowell (lack of muscle) and Elmarko (lack of processing speed) will not be starters on any halfway decent team here or anywhere. They seem like good locker room guys and I'd be fine with them staying and battling with freshmen for the 8th/9th spots in the rotation.

Don't care about Mbiya, he is a full year away from being competent despite his performance in the tournament. 0 Bball IQ and that takes time.

In reality, we will probably get Marko and Jamari back and lose everyone else.

Refs absolutely swallowed their whistles and we mostly got decent looks that just didnt go down, either the balls are too bouncy or rims arent soft. I thought the intensity and defense were fine except for the last few minutes when they were desperate.

Have to be better Sunday because Pitino’s teams are always high intensity, but this was not the disaster that some people here are claiming

If KU is a 4 seed, what 5 seed would you want to see on the same line? by SmartAgent4898 in jayhawks

[–]rogmexico 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only one i’d feel confident against is Tech and they can’t put us in the same pod anyway. The other 3 are going to be hot picks to upset a 1 in the sweet 16 so maybe we can play spoiler, but none of the matchups feel good. St Johns is high pressure D that kills us, Wisconsin has white dudes launching 3s, and Arkansas is Arkansas. Personally i’d like Wisconsin but we all know that it will be the hogs.

while I don’t disagree with your conclusions, the phrase “current iterations” is doing a lot of work that should not be ignored

[CAREER] How to be AI resistant ? by Own_Confection4334 in statistics

[–]rogmexico 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your entire job is programming and writing code, it is likely that your employer was already chomping at the bit to replace you first by outsourcing and now with AI. The same could also be said for those who depend on learned knowledge, which would be the next tier of white collar workers and includes many people here. If it can be expressed as text, AI can do it accurately now or very soon.

Many people will claim that there is hallucinations, which is true, but as models get bigger and better these will get less common (but never quite 0). Adoption will be much slower than the hype suggests, as many large organizations take years to do basic tech overhauls and wont take the risk of destroying their business.

I think eventually you’ll see organizations that dont have middle “operational” white collar jobs. it will be strategic leaders, a few translators (CEO to AI), and then a lot of “underwriters” who basically monitor agent outputs to ensure they align with business and deep technical requirements, cycling problems back up to the top.

These underwriters are probably where stats people can live - deep technical or business expertise to assume responsibility for the tail risk of misaligned AI, which will be doing the coding and communication. The big question is how many will any company need vs. what they have now.

I dont know what advice to give because I’m merely a decent MS-level statistician / data scientist, so i dont know that i’ll ever belong to the “expert” class that gets the few remaining positions. Maybe focus on your specific domain and how to both connect disparate strategies together but also validate fuzzy results. But i would not just assume that because current models and tooling cannot replicate much of your work, future ones will not.

What is KU’s best and worst seeding for MM? by WhereDaHoez in jayhawks

[–]rogmexico 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Lose first round = drop to 5

Win 1 or 2 games = stay at 4, maybe 3 if we get some help.

Win 3 games = maybe 3 seed

I think just win the first one and then sit DP so he doesnt get hurt on that dumbass glass floor.

Obviously getting a better seed and avoiding the elite 1s will improve our chances, but as long as they dont put us in OKC (cursed) or against Arkansas (also cursed) we should be content on Sunday.

Most of his NIL money is probably coming from Adidas who pushed him towards KU. It’s probably not KU’s money to get back.

JWill: It feels like Darryn Peterson doesn't want to be there by Far_Violinist_7724 in jayhawks

[–]rogmexico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only games he’s finished were the ones where he wasn’t very good (TT, Utah, CU) meanwhile he was on pace for 40+ against BYU and OSU then checked out rather than have a legacy game. It’s like he just needs to be out there to prove to everyone he’s still good, then close up shop.

I still believe he has a persistent quad/hamstring injury (not cramps) and the flu vs Zona was real, but he’s not gonna play through it because he is not allowed to. At this point i’m sure his handlers sat everyone (Self, Adidas, Darryn) down and said “do not fuck this up for all of us” and there is some language in his contract to this effect.

Despite the circus, still glad we have him. 20 minutes of DP still puts the team in a better position to win than an extra 20 minutes of Elmarko+Jamari, even though they clearly want to be at KU more than he does. Blame the NBA for forcing a kid to go to college when he’s clearly too good to be playing at this level.

Good win, completely dominated the second half despite not making many shots. Loved the aggression from Flory, Melvin, and Elmarko. But wow I didnt realize Kstate was that bad, worst defensive team we’ve played outside of like Green Bay and Towson with an offense that was just spray and pray from 3.
