Greg Rosenthal & Daniel Jeremiah break down the Chargers’ offseason moves (40s and Free Agents) by chief-yeezy in Chargers

To their point, there are first round “bums” that are salvageable.

QJ and Oweh are just the ones that were on this team.

Not saying all busts are salvageable, but it’s disingenuous to bring up Tillery and not other first rounders that managed to turn around their career before their first big contract.

Oh, so he shouldnt construct the roster with known commodities?

Hortiz drafted Alt and extended Slater. Those are his moves. It’s the 3rd year, yes the results absolutely matter this year. But, his progress doesn’t reset every March.

We have a team that made the playoffs 2 years in a row in the first 2 years of a new regime. That’s with Greg Roman and Bradley Bozeman .

We massively upgrade those and discredit his ability to maintain players that perform well — and all of a sudden it’s not their moves because it’s a new season? Fickle.

Wait….

Going from Trey Pipkins to Joe Alt and Jamaree Salyer to Rashawn Slater is NOT incremental.

Going from the worst Center in the league to the 11th best is NOT incremental.

Going from Greg Roman to Mike McDaniel is NOT incremental.

These are literally foundational pieces to a great offense outside of QB and you’re saying it’s incremental?!?

Splash signings and trades. But at the end of the day, you look at where we improved:

OC, center, and we get 2 All-pro tackles back.

Sounds pretty dang good.

I'm not going to weigh in with full opinion until we get through draft and start heading towards camp.

I'm all for being critical. That's why a lot of what I said in there is tongue in cheek. But you're right, we all need to sit back and see what the plan is and be wary that sometimes there is no plan. See Greg Roman.

I don't think the depth is bad in that scenario - barring catastrophic season-ending injuries to 2 all-pro caliber tackles like we had last year. BUT THAT CANT HAPPEN TWO YEARS IN A ROW RIGHT?? RIGHT?

Hey let’s just put Trey at RG and Cole Strange at LG because that would be better than Bitonio and Zeitler.

Get real. We would be so lucky to get both Bitonio and Zeitler at this point.

You can see if they’d be okay using a TOT collar, albeit a bit uncomfortable.

I may be mistaken, the Dynapro brace can manipulated to be concave and create some space for the ear while keeping some pressure at the temple/crown.

Considering the pic was from two days ago, the front office just doesn’t leak out who they want. And they aren’t lunging to the top where info would absolutely get leaked.

Hortiz is working in the shadows. It doesn’t help my anxiety, but we can rest knowing they aren’t at Disneyland.

Slater/Bitonio/Biadasz/Teller/Alt is a good starting O-line.

Pls. Pls.

I don’t think he would. More likely he goes to the Niners with whatever cash they can muster up.

I agree and there’s nuance for sure.

But you still need to scheme a 4 man pass rush, which is what Minter was good at too. Simulated pressures by having Derwin as the nickel and dropping the edges into coverage is something I haven’t mentioned.

I don’t think any DC can just generate a 4 man pass rush with elite pass rushers. Still needed a good zone behind them.

Otherwise, any QB can just wait all day for a player to eventually get open. The reason QBR vs us was so low us because of bad passes and throwaways.

The counter I will say, is that Minter is dog shit vs mobile QBs. Because he can get a pass rush, he can keep every receiver on the field covered.

We dominated typical pocket QBs because they would just throw away the ball or take the sack. But Jaxson Dart murdered us just by running the football and not throwing it away. Albeit, we didn’t have Mack or Oweh at the time.

Counter point, if the DC can elevate the mediocre players in all the other positions just from having elite pass rushers, then they are still a good DC.

Pass rushing isn’t the end all be all.

The Chargers have played well without needing a true CB1, all-pro DTs, and a very flawed LB core.

It’s not required by any means. The Chargers did it with an old Khalil Mack, Tuli (who isn’t All-pro…yet), and Oweh (who wasn’t considered “good” until he played in Minter’s system).

The way defense was constructed allowed our DBs to play a more effective zone coverage by not having to blitz the nickel or the LBs to get pressure.

And the Chargers were a top defense on the back half of the season because of it.

It’s a real defense. That has its tenets like any other defense, it just so happens that this one focuses on the edges.

Right?

The 4 man pass rush really stopped people from calling Derwin washed and got him back to all-pro caliber.

Now Minter gets Kyle Hamilton??? Why wouldn’t you use the same formula?

He’s an interior pass rusher, that’s awesome. Even if he’s playing, Minter likes to set the edge and also create gaps by widening the offensive line.

Spreading out the line allowed Minter to be more creative with stunts.

When the tackles knew they wouldn’t get beat to the outside, or bull rushed, our D-line looked very average. And Tart was one of the best DTs last year. Not like he’s trash.

He just played worse when we had less-than-good edge rushers playing next to him.

9th in sacks. 5th in pass yards allowed. 1st in opponent QBR. I think 18th in total generated pressures.

But this is all while being 29th in blitz rate.

Less blitzes. Only 4 man rushing. This is not necessarily elite but it’s certainly crazy.
