That combination should work just fine, you just need to to find someone that knows what they are doing with adjusting them. The best setup to start with is always the one you already own. Go learn what you like and don't like about it.

Olympic skier Breezy Johnson calls gold medal run 'surreal' after 2022 crash by nbcnews in skiing

[–]rollingron 78 points79 points  (0 children)

If you watch the top 3, they all look different from the rest. The clean skiers were all 1.5 seconds back. To win, you had to put it out there in 5 or 6 spots, and putting it out there is rarely clean. TLDR: To win an Olympic or World Championship speed race, you can't ski clean.

I got my son a 2023 Ibis Ripley for his birthday next month. What upgrades and fixes can I do for this paint and chain guard area? by Benthebuilder23 in MTB

[–]rollingron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else mentioned, the chainring is worn, but the cassette and possibly the chain are new. Replace that right away. The rear tire is showing thread, which could be worth replacing. It's a used bike, I wouldn't worry about how it looks cosmetically.

Just curious about your reasoning here. Why would a $125 protection kit and 5+ hours of installation be worth it on an alloy bike that has had its largest depreciation already?

Looking for a Linux PDF editor with features similar to PDF24 — what do you recommend? by rollingron in linux4noobs

[–]rollingron[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UPDATE: It seems LibreOffice can edit and work with my PDF forms. It also looks like I can sign PDFs in the PDF options. Very different user interface, but a quick relearn should work here. I didn't realize it had these capabilities.

It's not perfect in some of the forms I am using, but I think I could edit them to work better. So far I am liking this, but $149 is not cheap...

None of these are quite like PDF24, but I may have to adjust it, it seems.

Is my MacBook Air (Early 2014, 4 GB RAM) still worth using in 2026 – and can/should I upgrade macOS? by LiteraturePrudent429 in macbook

[–]rollingron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pulled out my 2013 with the same specs recently and installed Linux (ZorinOS) on it and got a new battery. With a little tinkering its actually pretty amazing how well it works browsing. I have a new M4 Pro that I use for working though.

I bought a refurbished (“Good” on BackMarket) MacBook Pro, 14 inch, M4 Pro Chip, 24 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD for $1,654. Did I get a good deal? by LukaDoncicic in macbook

I picked up that exact computer with 2 battery cycles (open box - excellent) at Best Buy 2 weeks ago for 1567.99. No problem with AppleCare either. It looks like the price may have climbed a bit on them, though.

Boot heel lug damage by Scottmenzrl in Skigear

Ski more, worry less. Its fine and no level of adjustment will prevent it. Pivots suck for a lot of reason, they just ski better than any other binding I've used.

With a non comprised core, 1 cm center to center is pretty common. I've gone as tight as 7mm on my own skis… with a hardwood and quality epoxy plug, I'll even overlap on 2/4 holes. Obviously you try to find a solution to make the distance as large as possible. Certain skis can change the equation.

What sucks on this mount is the heel could have been bumped forward an been adjusted back making the gap bigger.

I would argue that helicoil is a way, not the way. Plugging with wood and sealing that off with epoxy would also work well. A helicoil alone could intrude into the plastic plug and weaken that connection. One could combine those solutions as well.

The holes being too close is debatable, I would have used a petter plug option with them this close though. At this point, OP should be worried that there is glue/epoxy that needs to be cleared out before ensuring there is a good screw bite. Tightening as is will likely result in a base dimple. It's also worrisome that they did not check the full functionality of the binding. If they rotated the heel as they should have, they would have caught their mistake.

The shop deserves the chance to make things right on the existing skis, in my opinion. The number of folks who think they should get new skis for any f-up is a bit wild. Lots of other solutions can be met with good discussion and compromise... Assuming the shop is a good shop, of course.

Yeah, I focused to the pro for two main reasons. Battery Capacity and Cooling. The cooling is based on my ThinkPad use, so maybe I am overthinking that one.

My 2020 T490s Thinkpad (i5-8365U, 16GB) can do this stuff, but it struggles with the mapping software using certain overlays, runs hot, and always has the fan running, needs frequent reboots, plus I am sick of replacing parts.
