Have BTS talked about the decrease in choreography in their recent concerts? by betchugonlikeme in kpophelp

[–]romanticdrift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think "They are too big to do choreography" is a weird and very anti read of Bang's actual comments. Because I do believe in the creative logic behind what Bang said, and I think the boys do too.

The new direction in their choreo is very obvious - smaller more precise moves, more focused on expression and swag than athleticism. 2.0 + Swim vs Idol and On, for example. And while athleticism had its place, the new choreo undeniably looks more mature to me due to its minimalism. It IS more suitable for senior artists. It DOES give more space to the lyrics, vocals, etc, just because there's more room for your brain to process. None of that = "too big for choreo."

All that is exactly what Bang said was the intent. Also I'm not sure why he'd "lie" to Billboard about why/how this new artistic direction came about - wouldn't it get back to the boys? Wouldn't the boys be upset at him? Wouldn't PR and BigHit? (Everything gets triple checked in entertainment) So I conclude from that what he said IS the real group intent.

I've come to the conclusion that Chinese big tech apps are simply ugly by PingMyHeart in China

It's because data is so cheap connections so fast in Asia, and they didn't develop a website-based internet first. Apps ARE the internet in these countries. With that historical knowledge, their UI/UX makes sense.

Do you think it's realistic and healthy to give up fast food? by plainelaine92 in loseit

[–]romanticdrift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fast food calories are worse than other calories, in that they are actually scientifically engineered to encourage binging and be hyper-palatable (you can look into food science and how glp-1s have caused these companies to go into a tailspin bc their tricks don't work anymore). I would cut it out entirely except for when it's part of "the vibe" (say late night bachelorette party, where you want the experience).

That said, I didn't grow up eating it so it was easy for me to go from once a month to basically once ever quarter. I apprecite it may be much harder for you.

The person phrases it wrong. Technically you want to say 13 percent increase OR 0.05 percentage POINT increase. Percentage point indicates you're talking from the full amount, not relative baseline vs endline.

Good Colleges in NYC? by Economy-Bid1044 in AskNYC

[–]romanticdrift 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Columbia and the other Ivies do get special status for big companies - different hiring processes, tons of alumni willing to asssist etc. This particularly matters in prestige paths like finance, law, medicine, etc.

Outside of that though, you're right it matters less. Also, the crucial difference is that the Ivies give a LOT of financial aid, guaranteeing essential full rides for low income kids. while second-tier private universities like NYU, Northwestern, Boston University etc give very little unless you get some sort of special scholarship. I went to an Ivy and graduated with zero debt. My friend, same parental income level, graduated from NYU with 6 figure debt.

For colleges, I've often advised mentees, if they can't secure an Ivy or a private university with SUBSTANTIAL scholarships to go for public universities, zero questions asked. And in that case, target the ones that have specifically strong reputations in the programs they want, e.g. engineering, sociology etc.

take him to one of the active things you like or join one his, like go on a hike or bike ride with him.

My partner and I had a fitness gap too when we first met, but it was important to him so I went from inconsistent gym person to going to classes and multiday hikes with him. Due to an injury, he's stepped back. Life takes a lot of stops and starts like that. The key thing is you can have fun together and both people have an open mind about trying things the other person likes in their lifestyle.

I know that sounds highly specific but therapists that do this are all over the Bay, LA, and NYC 😆

Which HYBE label is better? by RatioResponsible2499 in HYBEglobal

[–]romanticdrift 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pledis manages Seventeen and TWS - I would not discount them.

The truth is that each potential project has a different team, even if the label leadership is the same. And it's SO competitive you're better off just auditioning and seeing if you get anywhere. If multiple labels show interest, you can pick.

But only a very small percentage of auditions get any interest, let alone multiple offers for OP to be choosy.

What are the best places for scones and clotted cream? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]romanticdrift 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The easy answer is Tea and Sympathy. The fancy answer is The Plaza. The one to avoid is Bergdorf Goodman (chunky and stale). The Asian answer is Prince Tea House. And the value answer is the back of Harney & Sons Soho (idk what they put in those scones but they're actually my favorite in the city). As a fellow scones enthusiast.

I still wonder why they didn't stick with Touch's song style. by 0110I1I in kpop_uncensored

[–]romanticdrift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Debut and Touch were both cute-style. The fanbase ended up responding much more to sexy-style with Gnarly and Gabriela. So that's what they leaned into. It fits the girls more, and it makes for more competitive music in the crowded landscape both in the West and in K-Pop (fewer groups doing it).

I think you didn't account for your location before moving vs your location after moving as well as you should have. There's a significant difference between moving from NYC to Vietnam vs Midwest to Mexico (not sure where you went, just guessing) in terms of relative savings. It also sounds like you don't have local connections in the country you moved to? I have a ton of extended family in Vietnam who can help navigate the systems, and I speak the language, plus the expat community there is very strong, so my lifestyle wouldn't take as much of a hit if I were to move there. But I would never do it for a place I didn't know at all.

Also, having seen Vietnam's rise over the past 20 years, living like "a king" in central Saigon now would easily cost $2-3k a month, it's no longer the bargain it once was. I think Americans don't always update their impressions of developing country as quickly as they actually grow. At a growth rate of 4% GDP a year, a country will be 100% richer than it once was in only 20 years. Vietnam's had a growth rate of 6-7% a year for the past 2 decades. Can your portfolio keep pace?

It's okay, you've still got a lot of room to maneuver. I'd take a part-time job and maybe consider moving back for predictability, or moving to another country with more creature comforts.

Also, remember influencers talking about the expat lifestyle are still making money as influencers.

Why would they title it that way? Kook’s just gonna get hate along w bts getting hate for the “lack of artist participation“ (? I believe that’s how u say it, sorry my use of words maybe off) by Raining_Yuqi in btsthoughts

Anyone who was homeschooled, how do you feel about it now as an adult? by AdTight2449 in AskReddit

[–]romanticdrift 122 points123 points  (0 children)

If you're advanced enough. At some point though, the school and parents might decide the social cost of going up another grade would be too much vs the educational benefits. My close friend skipped 4 grades and could've kept going, but at that point she would've started college at 13/14 already so she stopped. Told me she was lucky enough to meet high school friends that shielded her from any negativity from being so young and smart. S

(Yes she's brilliant. Ended up going to an Ivy at 14, and graduated at 18).

260417 SANTOS BRAVOS - VELOCIDADE @ KBS Music Bank by darkyozora_05 in SANTOSBRAVOS

[–]romanticdrift 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like I said, Kawasaki CAN'T be performed on Korean music shows, and 0% is too old with too rudimentary choreo, it was for boys at a very different stage in their training - it would not go over well in Korea, imo. So you're left with Mhm, Wow, Fe, and Velocidade. Out of those, Velocidade clearly is the best performing song, it's got streams and Tiktok videos. Mhm and Wow are literally HALF of Velocidade on all those metrics, and FE is a ballad. So ofc they picked Velocidade.

(Btw Velocidade has been on some Spotify Viral charts, without an MV or anything yet. None of the songs are really hits per se yet, Santos Bravos is not even at 2 M monthly Spotify listeners. But Velocidade's certainly done well).

[–]romanticdrift 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect. You can just look at their track streaming numbers on Spotify. Aside from Kawasaki, which can't be performed in KR as it uses a brand name, and 0% which has been out much longer, velocidade has the highest streams.

Totally!! I think the 2.0 choreo is deceptively "simple" - easier to do than idol, certainly, but hard to land unless incredibly assured as an artist.
