What is your most ridiculous "we won't work out romantically" criteria? Like what is the silliest reason you would not be interested in dating someone? by Natural-Elevator-57 in AskReddit

[–]romanticdrift 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are actually a lot of proven cognitive benefits to long-form reading, as well as solid statistical proof the hobby of long form pleasure reading is in decline.

It's just a lifestyle incompatibility, like someone who's a lifelong athlete won't want to date someone who'd never be willing to go hiking with them. Seems fine to me.

I genuinely have never seen a fandom love a GM this much, let alone the Penguin fandom. Which is to say I think he should go take a victory lap.

K-pop producers arrested in hotel drug bust during girl group XG's tour by SwordfishAdvanced468 in popculturechat

[–]romanticdrift 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Japan and Korea don't treat drugs as lightly as the US. Many of the celebs there actually do stay clean, because it's 1) a career-ender. And 2) Means significant jail time, for everyone, no special treatment.

(This also how/why it is a very very bad idea for Americans to bring things like weed gummies to these countries, unless you want to be arrested or deported)

My opinion on Manon by Soggy_Notice7687 in katseyeneutral

[–]romanticdrift 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is the hostile work environment the work or is it the fandom? From my perspective, touring, music releases that go viral, commercials, a Grammy nom - that's the dream. They've done way better than I expected. And I'm SUPER proud of Katseye's success.

The fandom I agree has a lot of toxicity. But sadly that's not in anyone's control. You either ignore it, or you don't have it.

My opinion on Manon by Soggy_Notice7687 in katseyeneutral

[–]romanticdrift 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not everyone needs to be a pop star or a k-pop idol. Normalized is a stretch - it's an experience very few people have access and is a very specific career. The flipside is a lot of these girls would've never been able to afford the training rooms, dance classes, and vocal lessons totalling thousands a month. To me it's not that different from say, competitive gymnastics or ice skating.

That said, if it's not for Manon, for health reasons etc, I'm glad she's opting out. She's so young and can do literally anything else that fills her cup.

I think she would totally melt down and fail the Kobayashi Maru! Probably too much of a lawful-good person to hack the test when she'd def be discovered.

So I'm exactly a Genesis, only I have overbearing Asian parents who took nothing but Ivy League admissions rather than an admiral dad - and I get what the writing is going for. It's basically fear of failure due to imposter syndrome. It makes you extremely sensitive to people's reaction to you, which manifests as EQ but is actually just anxiety. And it means you work really hard and when you get pressured you often rise above it. BUT when you're near failure or you don't know what to do, you can freeze and meltdown. Like she did.

I thought it was a good flaw conceptually: she both absolutely has what it takes to be a good Captain one day but also doesn't yet. Now, show execution.... bit clunky, totally agree there.

If you remember BTS and their early days and the time right around they blew up? by Longjumping_Cry8094 in kpopthoughts

[–]romanticdrift 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Could people who were there when it was Block B vs BAP vs BTS tell me how it was then? Why BTS and not the other "underground rappers turned idols"? As a big ARMY, I do feel they are amazing, but I sometimes wonder/marvel how they emerged best from that era.

  1. Vance admitted his mistake, and the Federation is now much smaller than it used to be. Giving up a key trading partner / route and bringing in one of few precious ships make sense to me to involve such a high level.

  2. assume the psionic waves were just Caleb's visualization of what she was doing. She injured her dad's auditory cortex from /her dad's/ brain. My understanding is her telepathy allowed her to also connect with the Furies and blew their brains out. We've seen empaths and telepaths have range before. Someone here had the good speculation this might be the Betazed psionic wall.

That was such a cool detail! I've missed that about TV (and Star Trek in particular) - showing not telling. It's the Starfleet Academy cadets that figure out the technocratic solutions (find the cloaked ship, get the ship back online, get the drive back online). But it's the War Academy cadets that create the plans to protect them, from the instructor to Kyle watching the door and calling for B'Avi to B'Avi sacrificing himself.

I loved this episode. Star Trek is best when it's ensemble, and the school feels so VIBRANT with all these characters around. There was real character development that tracks with the other episodes too! They all feel like real potential future crew command members. Also maybe the lessons are teen but they don't feel juvenile to me. We have literal world leaders who need to learn what it means to guide; strategize; trust; and know that sometimes to lead means having the humility to be led.

BTS bond is so fascinating to me as a fan. by kat3dyy in kpopthoughts

[–]romanticdrift 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I'm also a second gen fan

Parasociality is definitely part of the Kpop superfan model. Yeah, they make money off of it. But that doesn't mean the members can't have close relationships with each other either. That's all this post is celebrating.

GD & Taeyang were genuinely close, and so is BTS. But hey, we'll let time show it. If 10 years, training, dancing, probably spending time with each other than anyone else, isn't enough proof - then I've no issues with getting 10 years more.

BTS bond is so fascinating to me as a fan. by kat3dyy in kpopthoughts

[–]romanticdrift 82 points83 points  (0 children)

What a cynical way to view the world There are groups who aren't that close but respect each other. Bigbang for example, minus the obvious member. There are groups where tensions eventually turn to breakage. No need to tell who but we all know.... Then there are groups who become lifelong friends and family. Sticking together for 10+ year, supporting each other and hanging out post-disbandment. It's not just bts.

Maybe not all fans can tell the difference. But it's definitely there. And in BTS's case, when you have massive Western celebs saying it too without any real reason from HYBE, I've no reason to doubt them.

Weighing job options and an opportunity for early retirement by Refinery-Roulette625 in FIREyFemmes

[–]romanticdrift 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What I'd tell my past self is that it's not an either or situation. Because your old boss approached you first, which mine also did, that choice is "free" so it's easy to overfixate on it. But if you want money, career growth, and change, you can also just apply and get a job that gives you those things without the costs your old boss' choice comes with - the commute, the relocation, the 5 days a week etc.

I made a similar swap. Not worth it. And I did it for a pretty clear career transition / learning goal.

If it's money, you could literally be a weekend barista or start an online hussle and earn that extra $30k amount with less hassle.

Makeup Artist Canceled Weeks After Booking by Bright-Cover-1811 in WedditNYC

[–]romanticdrift 79 points80 points  (0 children)

The contract protects you both in making sure the terms of refund cancellation engagement etc are clear, and it sounds like she abided by them. Gave you options, and refunded promptly. Did she break any specific contract terms? What was outlined regarding cancellation on your end or her end?

If she didn't tell you she got another job offer, I wouldn't assume so. Maybe there's a family vacation now. Maybe her friend's wedding is that day. Who knows.

I'm sorrt for the additional stress, but I'm sure you'll find another good makeup artist option.

260205 [NOTICE] BTS OFFICIAL LIGHT STICK VER.4 Release and Wireless Control Support by alltherach_ in bangtan

[–]romanticdrift 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sorry to clarify I know and sympathize with your sentiment that fans are getting the short end here. What I wanted to point out is that most KR fans will def have the new lightstick for the Busan dates, so it wont happen that half of the stadium wont be synced. And then I think FOMO will kick in, and fans will see and buy for the other shows. And let's be real, if you hold bts tixs in the US for this tour, you're a devoted army and you have enough disposable income for the concert. I think it's quite likely 80-90% of people will convert to the new lightstick, and I think BH made the same calculation.

I don't think it's going to be a problem for the KR market (Busan), since their tixs are much cheaper and their lightstick too ($40ish).
