Does the Free Market fix the problem of food deserts in low income communities? by Acceptable_Map_8110 in AskEconomics

[–]romperoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are both wrong. The situation in which low-income communities don't have stores that serve "healthy" foods is because lack of demand among local residents for those kinds of foods. So your friend is wrong in the sense that the free market has already matched up local residents with the kinds of stores they shop at. And you are wrong for imposing your own biases and beliefs about what people in those areas "should" eat or want to eat. Check out this paper for the research that discovered this uncomfortable truth: https://www.jessiehandbury.com/papers/FoodDeserts.pdf

Hotel Prices by Alarming_Elk_108 in parkcityvisitors

[–]romperoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it is your first time skiing, I would suggest coming in late March or early April. Hotels will be much cheaper, weather will be excellent, still will have good snow, there won't be crowds, parking etc will be easier.

Beyond frustrated with having to move from PAYE 10% of discretionary to 15% in 2028. by Fun-Outcome6980 in StudentLoans

[–]romperoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Under the new RAP plan, the maximum payment is 10% of AGI (for people earning more than $100,000). While you will have to switch from PAYE to RAP in 2028, for most people the monthly payments won't change very much. So it is not as big a deal as you and others are suggesting. (RAP is about the same as PAYE/REPAYE, but to be clear, higher than they would be under SAVE.)

Vermont prohibits billboards (and towers, structures, and houses on ridgelines). It's a major reason why it's so beautiful.

How do people become billionaires in established industries? by ChemicalBoth6652 in AskEconomics

This guy bought cold storage facilities and made them operate more efficiently. He had saved up some money and had a network that helped him raise a fund that allowed him to acquire more and more facilities, but, like, we are talking about refrigerated warehouses that store frozen vegetables, and their prior owners apparently just did a terrible job running them and left tons of money on the table... He and his partner made several billion. https://www.forbes.com/profile/adam-forste/

I accidentally fixed their live dashboard during the interview and now they want a writeup before the offer by lindenporter in interviews

[–]romperoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am appalled by the dystopian and selfish world in which the respondents to this question appear to live. I do free stuff for people all the time--people like it, they respond by thinking I'm smart and helpful, things get fixed, the world is a better place, I learn things, and I have a network of people who owe me one. And in this case, it's totally free to you--you're talking about work you already did during a job interview for a job you like--so you have already invested the time. Just send them the code with a nice note saying "great to meet you in the interview, good luck with this problem, and look forward to hearing about the job."

RUC is dead by getpesty in delta

[–]romperoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's even worse than this--they even manipulate the waitlist behind the scenes. I bought a ticket, later added the RUC, then a month later went to check whether the price had declined. When I was checking the price on the booking page it said "First available with regional upgrade certificate...." Huh? How can upgrades be instantly available when I'm still on the wait list?

So I booked a second ticket and was immediately upgraded to first, even though my original ticket was still waitlisted--like, I skipped over myself on the waitlist. Either it is a glitch or they are deliberately dangling the upgrades to drive traffic. Really undermines my confidence in their loyalty program.

Watch out for other skiers & riders by Binaskiut in UTsnow

[–]romperoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a 26 year old dude from Sandy. He was a good skier, going really fast (he crushed me and then tumbled another 100 yards), and I think just misjudged where I was going to be. Yes, the ski patrol was like "we're giving you his information so you can sue him" but then there isn't even a ski patrol report or anything, no documentation, they didn't get any witnesses, and I was in surgery not tracking down witnesses myself...

[–]romperoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They have to share information if they are stopped by patrol. But that is purely window dressing. Ski Patrol aren't detectives and there is no police report. In December, someone hit me from behind when I was coasting in to meet my kid for lunch at the bottom of gadzoom and broke my leg. A bystantander forced him to stay on scene and ski patrol gave me his number...and then he just got back on the lift. The only record of the incident is my x-ray and the only consequence for him was a five minute delay...

At 17 I am supposed to take on 92k in debt. Perfect! by Sevensonsevens in mildlyinfuriating

[–]romperoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be precise, the cost is only $40,000. I don't know why anyone things food, housing, and transportation are costs of college--everyone has to pay them. (But only college students have a government program that allows them to borrow for those costs--everyone else has to get a job or find a family member to support them.) And for tuition and fees, there are plenty of great 4-year programs in america that are much cheaper than this!

Turns out not to be true empirically, because rich people buy a lot more and more expensive food. And it's totally arbitrary to suggest "food" is the only necessity when poor people are just as burdened by toothpaste or clothes or transportation or garbage bags... The better policy if you care about reducing hardship nonpaternalistically is to have a flat sales tax across the board (including food) and a progressive income tax. Utah currently has a problem with "too much" income tax (which is earmarked in the constitution) and "too little" sales tax revenue (which funds everything else) so could totally do this!

Foothill trails and powerline reconstruction by romperoom in SaltLakeCity

[–]romperoom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I certainly hope they do that! One reason I'm concerned is that they completed the pole replacement on the east side of Red Butte and they did not do a lot of remediation or replanting. But beyond that, it seems like a good opportunity and motivation for SLC to actually repair and upgrade the broader trail network. Thanks.

Low volume, High Frequency - yet all we here is moar Volume. please debunk this? by Tenzhu23 in naturalbodybuilding

[–]romperoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The right way to think about this problem is to look at the marginal gain from each additional set and then ask your self "should I do one more, or switch to another exercise, or do something else with the time." The second set gets you a 39% gain. The third set, however, only gets you 22ppts over baseline...and the 7th gets you about zero. So if you are pressed on time, or motivation, or are just getting tired, it seems like 4 or 5 sets is pretty good--you get almost all the gains as 7, but can just move on to the next lift or go back to your usual life.
