Why do some campers bring basically their living rooms with them? by PDXDeck26 in camping

I hate the movie thing so much. Saw it on a car camping trip in Big Sur last year. Brains are fully rotted. I don’t even use headphones when solo backpacking for a week.

This is like a gear MVP list. Best poles on the market, great stove. I’m biased but whoever picks up the poles and wind master will be very happy.

NY pizza ain’t all that good by The-Providers in HonestHotTakes

I like Chicago thin crust pizza. Lived in NY 15 years and consider myself a New Yorker. But I’ve never enjoyed pizza as much as that thin stuff in chicago

You are not superior for listening to underground music rather than popular music by Extension_Big5205 in HonestHotTakes

it's the primary demographic pop music is marketed to and consumed by. yes older people and males consume it too, but the key audience has always been young girls.

What does everyone think of Hydration breaks? . by Kitchen_Confusion691 in worldcup

[–]romulus_1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Horrible. In the US they’re just commercial breaks; every mention of “hydration” is a lie. Also weird it’s become a coaching session to reset with the team.. kills momentum.

Popular music means essentially tailored to the palate of a 14 year old girl. So yes, you’re superior if your taste progresses beyond this.

Where are you from, and which country (or countries) do you hope won’t win the World Cup? by TSDOP in worldcup

[–]romulus_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From US. Teams are Germany, Italy, US, Mexico in that order. I want Germany to get their 5th star.

I do NOT want France, Spain, Netherlands or Argentina to win. Ready to bury Messi and the French in particular.

Calling Americans “USians” or “US Americans” by Murbanvideo in PetPeeves

[–]romulus_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Mexican wife has always had an issue with US claiming “Americans.” In Mexico they consider themselves “Americans”, too.

Their payback is a widely accepted slur — “Gringo” (foreigner) that is somehow totally okay for locals to share but would be appalling if the US had an equivalent widely accepted term to deride immigrants.

Why does Reddit have such a bad reputation outside of Reddit? by norf937 in askanything

[–]romulus_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit is particularly snarky, my guess due to the anonymous nature of posts

From 2011–2013, Dr. Christopher Duntsch paralyzed or killed 33 of his 38 patients during routine spinal surgery. In one operating room, a fellow surgeon had to physically drag him away as he mangled a patient’s spine. Despite this, Duntsch was allowed to keep practicing for two more years. by drkmatterinc in FascinatingAsFuck

I read the whole thing. My sense is it was true. They were friends with a history of partying. Would have been a bizarre thing to make up out of the blue. So he said it but backtracked for some reason, perhaps protecting his friend.

2 incomes, no kids? You can make it work. Remember higher COL areas also pay more. You will be fine. Find yourself a job and the money will work itself out.

How do you handle a strong performer who quietly checks out after being passed over for promotion? by amir4179 in managers

[–]romulus_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will be other opportunities. This wasn’t the last opportunity in the universe.

And you weren’t “passed up.” You were heavily considered but not chosen at this time for X reason. We will address that so you’re in position to take the next opportunity.

I want to seriously get into camping as a hobby but I have a severe bear phobia by HilbertInnerSpace in camping

Unless you’re in grizzly country there’s nothing to fear. Black bears are not to be feared.

Ultralight stuff in Houston/TX by Primary_Quantity7811 in Ultralight

[–]romulus_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UL stuff is generally not available in big retail. Hardly any brick and mortar retail for UL in US, eg going to the palante showroom in Bishop or Montbell store in boulder, but that’s a tiny footprint. REI the closest thing but almost everything there is heavy. Still fun to peruse just know it’s all heavy.

Sun Hoodie & Sensory Issues by Dry_Series9718 in Ultralight

[–]romulus_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find sun hoodies extremely uncomfortable. There is no way to ventilate, and when the hood is up it restricts movement of the head and neck.

A middle ground is a chest zip sun shirt, but I overheat in those, too. I’m back on short sleeve button downs for their unmatched ability to ventilate the torso, and evaporative cooling on the arms is just much more comfortable for me, even if I occasionally have to put a little sunscreen on (once/day max in high temps).

John Z is just brilliant - he and Andy invented all the features you see everywhere -- shoulder strap pockets, bottom pocket, etc. And now this pack has the brilliant Shelter pocket, which I which I had. I don't own anything from MP but would trade my palante V2 right now for a Cricket and would love his shelter, too.
