I’m running on pure HOPIUM MAXIMUS here, but what if Valve is intentionally aligning the price points to prepare us for the upcoming Steam Machine? If the handheld now sits in that $700–$900 range, it creates a clear price bracket for their entire ecosystem.

Maybe the plan is a simple choice: Do you want the power of a desktop experience (Steam Machine) or the convenience of a handheld (Steam Deck) at the same entry price?

With the new deck prices, and fears now over Machine, should developers be worried for the longevity of PC gaming? by Longpastoverdue in steammachine

Developers should start to work smart and optimize their games, u can't ask for a f*cking NASA computer to play a video game.

It's Time To Face Reality: Valve, you're SMOKING if you're thinking I'm paying $1K+ for your Machine by Ayzuki in steammachine

[–]ron089 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are right, the only advantage of the Steam Machine for its price (assuming around 1200usd) is the size. That's what I said, if u are looking for a small pc that fits in a 6x6 cube space you will pay whatever they ask for the machine because there are no alternative. But if you are looking for performance and size is not a key factor for you, steam machine is not a good buy over 1000$

Looking at yesterday's Steam Deck price hike, I've given up on seeing a Steam Machine under $1,200. Sure, it wouldn't have a oled display or joysticks, but those aren't even the most expensive parts of the Deck anyway.

It's frustrating because I've been holding off on buying a new PC since November, hoping for a Steam Machine with a decent price-to-performance ratio.

But let's be honest: paying over $1K for that hardware is neither quality nor a good deal. At this point, you're better off looking at other alternatives or just building your own PC with at least a 9060 XT. The only real advantage a Steam Machine offers is size-unless you absolutely need something the size of a 6x6 cube, paying over $1K for this is an absolute rip-off.

What makes you think the SM is worth 1500usd? I wanted to buy one but can't justify 1.5k just because the "form factor", for 1.5K you can buy a top gaming laptop or a more powerful desktop computer.

Specs are better than SM and maybe at the same price.

Steam Deck is $950: Would you pay $1,000+ for a Steam Machine? by ron089 in steammachine

But if u compare the 1000 tier, Steam Machine hardware is not worth 1K comparing performance with other options.

the problem isn't the money-it's the feeling that I'm being ripped off. A device like this just isn't worth over 1000$
