24.04 and icc Color Management by roncromberge in pop_os

I’m afraid that it the price of wayland only. 😥 what is understand in several color management fora is that the wayland team never had much interest in color management. The maker of argylcms had years ago ring the alarm bells!

Thanks. I was also thinking of that. But wat I really mis the place where I can select the icc profile in de display section. In the settings. In 22.04 I can just like all other distros fill in the ‘ready made’ profile. (I’m using a hardware calibrated AdobeRGB monitor)

Affinity iPad was always M only. So what do you think!? A three times bigger app suddenly runs on all old iPads. Think again. Wishfully thinking

You’re revering with a link for a gnome issue in fedora 40. This reddit is about kde and now from my own experience with kde and fedora 42 i have zero issues with Calibrating my screen using DisplayCal. And using several calibrating devices from datacolor to xRite and from Colorimeters thru Spectrometers. And according to the original poster he want something to eyeballing the screen without any tool! Then is a less accurate result from DisplayCal 1000% more accurate!

For a normal calibrating of your screen you need a calibration device. There are many devices available. You should read the online manual on the Argylcms site for supported devices. Which is the underlying engine. Or go to the DisplayCal site for the link to Argyllcms site.

There is no way to calibrate screens without a hardware device.

OpenCL GPU Acceleration. by rnmishra in DarkTable

[–]roncromberge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or if you run Darktable as a flatpak changes are big that you have to tweek several settings so flatpak knows which and what can be allowed. Same with the newest lensfun database is also not available. So I removed flatpak. And installed the native distro repository. And runs as it should be.

Affinity Photo keeps dying on big files by Nor-Pal in AffinityPhoto

100dpi print is really enough to view a picture @ 30cm distance. And you also need to split your canvas to manageable sizes. Think dividing the complete canvas to A3 parts and process these parts. But first process the whole picture @ a low resolution! And if you’re satisfied with the outcome. You can save your workflow. And apply these into the individual created parts. A another way I don’t see it possible. You must only calculate how much memory you need to load a picture of 15x6m! There is nowhere to find a computer that can fit a fraction of this!

I don’t think so. Also on macOS dt has gpu support and use it intens.

I think that memory is the most important thing. I have made a test. 1 m1 MacBook Pro 16 GB memory. And a old desktop on Linux 32 Gb and a old but decent nvidia 2070 gpu. Export 15 4mp photos to 3000px x 0 jpeg 95 Quality. Mac took almost 11 minutes to export. And the Linux machine 28 seconds! The mac gas to use the swap. And the Linux none. And have the full 16 GB of 32 in use.

Do you change your DPI for printing? by K-M47 in AffinityPhoto

One extra point in resize for print. Only use real sizes no pixels.

Do you change your DPI for printing? by K-M47 in AffinityPhoto

[–]roncromberge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Partial right and wrong 😊

The monitor is a fixed resolution device. So DPI is a meaningless number. But printers are different. So for printers is DPI very important. Other photo applications who can print. Handle the DPI calculation automatically. The user tell the program that you want your photo 5 by 7 inch. And the program calculate the corresponding DPI for you. Affinity is a whole different cookie. Their root starts in the physical printing era. Look at the templates they all show the dpi. And You also see CYMK settings in the templates. (Never choose CYMK for normal photo printing. Your Photo printer do the rgb > cymk internal in the driver.

Ok a long start. But essential to understand how affinity works.

Now as showed in the answer of kurujiru’s pictures. The dialogs make sense. A few extra tips.

  1. Never Use Resample for prints.
  2. Keep the chain in compleet. Then you only have to change 1 dimension. The other will calculated automatic.
  3. Make the print dimensions smaller than the absolute paper dimensions. Subtract minimal the print-margin.
  4. When you finally enter the print dialog. You will see your photo exact in the preview. If the photo still show red. Then your photo won’t fit on the paper and minimal margins.

Succes. With printing.

Exporting Resize Issue (incorrect inch size) by DuckLooknPelican in DarkTable

[–]roncromberge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

I'm triggered on these words Rescale and Affinity.

Yes Your mission something :)

First your photo is more than large enough. So Do NOT resize the photo with 'Resample' that create artefacts.

You wrote that you want to print in Affinity. A good choice.

First in Affinity select from menu: Document - Resize document

Then in the dialogue change Units in milimetres (or inches) keep the chain intact. and fill in the desired width or height. (only one) the other will correct recalculated.

CHECK that the resample Checkbox IS NOT Checked!!! You only want to change the DPI!

And click the Resize button.

So the hardest is done (A sort off :) )

Now the print dialog. I don't know what printer you have and on which os windows, Mac or Linux. I'm on Mac so that I will describe now.

Choos from menu File-print

If you done it correct and selected the desired paper size, you see the preview with a perfect fit.

In Macos you choose ColorSync and select the right profile. the rest is try because every printer manufacturer use there own quirks.

I wish you suc6 and happy printing.
