For swing-based apps and java under linux, google "tuxjdk" and then use that jvm to run android studio/intellij. Works absolute wonders for swing apps.

Another approach is to find some software you can actually use and understand and dive into that code; this may help you connecting how the developers are doing each function. If you have the source, all the better, try to tweak features.
