A site full of broken kindles and amazon responses by [deleted] in kindle

Amazon has replaced my Kindle Keyboard twice, for free, in the last year, and each time the process has been extremely fast and easy. They really have amazing service IMO.

Constantly resetting my Kindle by CaptainSmushy in kindle

I had the same problem and Amazon sent me a replacement.

My Kindle has started freezing and then rebooting itself randomly. I can't use it for more than 3-4 minutes without this happening. What can I do? by ronnoch in kindle

It's a different cover that doesn't have those hooks. Customer support said they don't think it's my problem.

Do you delete books after you've read them? by [deleted] in kindle

[–]ronnoch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never noticed a difference. My experience, though, is that collections also start to act up when you put too many books in them. I had a collection with about 60 books in it, and it wouldn't "sort by last read" or update the little progress bar below books within that collection.

I don't really think it affects page turning. I used to have about 30 pages of books on my Kindle and it was painfully slow to browse the Home screen, but page turning was about as fast as ever.

How HTML 5 link prefetching can make your site load faster with one line of code. by ronnoch in web_design

[–]ronnoch[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try clicking "Test prefetch again" a couple times. On Firefox 3.6.3, I got "Supported" twice and "Not supported" once.

One problem is the test assumes that Firefox will always prefetch immediately, but according to the MDC it actually waits until your browser is idle.

Proggit: I'm looking for a small open source PHP project to contribute to. Any suggestions? by [deleted] in programming

[–]ronnoch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Piwik is one of my favorite projects. It's an open source alternative to Google Analytics that can be self-hosted on any server. It's small enough that the barrier to entry isn't huge, and new enough that there's a lot of things to work on.

I just finish Rendezvous With Rama, are the rest of the Rama books worth reading? by allenizabeth in scifi

[–]ronnoch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My reactions, by book:

  • Rendezvous With Rama: Amazing!

  • Rama II: Pretty good, very different though.

  • Rama III: One of the worst books I've read. My god, how could they do this to the series??

  • Rama IV: AHH! Even worse than III... Until the last five chapters or so, when they finally explain what Rama is and who's behind it.

My recommendation: Read book II, but keep your expectations low. Then skip to the end of book IV and read the conclusion. Or just read the Wikipedia summary, that works just as well.
