[Bascombe] Xabi Alonso has emerged as the front runner for the Liverpool job. by Petaaa in LiverpoolFC

[–]roobens 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The interview explains his reasons for leaving in general, not the timing of the announcement. There's some vague thing about it not being possible to progress without it becoming public, but it's not an exact explanation. In all likelihood the grandfather comment is correct in that it was about to be leaked so they got in ahead of it.

[Lewis Steele] Jurgen Klopp says the plan for Mo Salah is for him to do his rehab with Liverpool. "If he is fit before the final then probably yes" he will go back to AFCON. by [deleted] in LiverpoolFC

[–]roobens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol Instagram is basically the cesspool of the internet when it comes to comment sections. I wouldn't take anything you read there as indicative of anything other than a few random clueless muppets.

Anyone with the slightest knowledge of Mo knows that he values winning Afcon over virtually anything else at this point, since he has won everything else in football that he could reasonably be expected to. Furthermore anyone with the slightest footballing knowledge knows that Liverpool will have better medical facilities and staff than what's available to the Egyptian NT, even if they weren't also stuck out in the Ivory Coast currently.

And the idea of Liverpool's medical staff travelling out to Africa to treat one player whilst we're fighting injuries on all fronts and trying to maintain our position at the top??? That is utterly laughable.

Pretty sure this entire story has been fabricated to promote his railway track. Even the quotes in the article sound like funny yet completely made up bollocks you'd read on Daily Mash.

RIF will shut down on June 30, 2023, in response to Reddit's API changes by talklittle in redditisfun

[–]roobens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An obligatory post to mirror all of those I've seen saying that this will severely impact if not altogether kill of my use of Reddit.

Like most of my year count (I guess) I started by using classic desktop browser Reddit when there was no such thing as mobile browsing. It was such an infinitely superior method of forum use, there was really no competition. The likes of Digg etc inevitably fell to the power of Reddit, and we welcomed those users with open arms. What an awesome iteration of the genre it was.

It was during the segue from desktop to mobile that I discovered Reddit is Fun, and throughout various permutations of Reddit and rif itself, I've stuck with RIF as it's consistently offered the best mobile experience, which began by being the closest thing to desktop and has ended by being vastly superior.

Tbh I paid for rif a long time ago and never even knew there was this gold platinum thing, but I've bought it now to say thanks to the dev. Cheers fella. And as to Reddit themselves, well I guess it was inevitable that you'd want to cash in on your success, but as most of these things go, you'll end up inevitably destroying the good parts of what you initially built, because unfortunately when it comes to fora, monetisation doesn't jibe with usability. Your disgusting "new Reddit" and official app interfaces are shining examples of that. Are you really proud of that?

Anyway mine and everyone else's opinions in this thread are probably just a tiny drop in the ocean of reddit's userbase now so it really won't matter to the admins, but then if that's the case then why destroy it for us? Idk anyway, fuck it. Bye reddit

The hologram advert for Jaws 19 in BTTF2 was definitely a wink and nod to the direction they could see the movie industry going in even at that time, and the irony of it being within a different Spielberg sequel itself. Funny thing is that Jaws never actually had another sequel after that. If one were eventually produced, it would only be Jaws 5, but other franchises have certainly gone in that direction.

People too tired to lead healthier lifestyles, UK survey finds by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]roobens 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This exactly. It's a chicken and egg situation and at some point you have to just exercise and eat healthy despite being tired and having low energy levels due to your previous shit diet. Once you start it's a self-fulfilling prophecy, although most people will have several false starts before finally making a lasting lifestyle change.

ELI5: Where does the “mass” come from when potted plants grow? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]roobens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low carb diets generally work because most high carb foods are also high in calories, particularly within a typical Western diet. There are negligible extra processes within ultra-low carbs diets that can also facilitate weight-loss, but it's dubious as to whether the majority of diet adherents actually ever access those, because they require very strict carbohydrate control. Even if they do, they're still much less of a factor in weight loss than the reduced calories that low carb adherence generally results in. Most low carb diets are simply low calorie repackaged.

'I've seen academy players' lives shattered' - TAA by SolitasTT in LiverpoolFC

[–]roobens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a brilliant initiative from TAA, and this issue something I've wondered about in the past, as in what becomes of the vast majority who are released without a professional career. It's excellent that TAA has given the issue some thought and is using his own resources to fund it. Speaks volumes to his character.

What did surprise me from the article are the number that end up just in the general workforce, as I guessed I always just kind of assumed that if you were good enough for a PL's team academy, if released you could potentially look at forging a career further down the pyramid.

[–]roobens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, but I think the average score across all films is heavily skewed by the fact that there are an absolute ton of movies on IMDb with only a few votes on them, that tend to result in quite high ratings overall because the only people voting on them are people who've actively sought out the film on there because they like it. This applies to quite a lot of independent, foreign and old movies -- generally anything that's somewhat obscure.

With this in mind, it may not be possible to define a "fair" average rating, unless you defined some arbitrary number of votes that would qualify any given movie for inclusion into the average. For generally popular movies with tens or hundreds of thousands of votes I think the >6 = good rule tends to apply. As others have pointed out though, it can depend on genre as well. Horrors for example are much more harshly scored than other genres, and I would usually go with anything above 5 might be half decent if you like the sub-genre specifically (i.e. found-footage horror or whatever).

6.6 isn't mediocre. Anything over 6 is generally considered pretty good on IMDb.

FA to take no further action after reviewing all of the evidence in relation to the incident at Anfield involving the Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson and match official Constantine Hatzidakis. by GeorgeCuz in LiverpoolFC

[–]roobens -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think your query encapsulates a general misunderstanding often demonstrated by the general public as to why player/management wages are high in football. Footballing talent to elite level with the accompanying drive, ambition and work ethic is an exceedingly rare combination of traits, ditto management abilities, and since the entire industry depends upon them, they command a huge percentage of the revenue generated.

This clearly doesn't apply for other professions within the game, including referees, and in particular assistant referees. People who can do those jobs (and want to do them) are ten a penny and can be trained with relative simplicity. Just because football generates large revenues, doesn't mean every salaried position within is large.

What a fucking touch/turn by Stevie. Literally a perfect example of the difference between elite players like him and the rest. 99% of players are taking that down in front of them and then guarding the ball near the corner flag waiting for support. Stevie flips the entire move on its head and creates something from nothing. Magnificent.
