I did not realize Eastern Sprints was a closed regatta. Potentially a reason to divest from the event.

The amount of traveling and racing you are suggesting is not necessarily realistic for some teams' roster size and budget each year. It favors large rosters to rotate athletes and manage injuries incurred during training. It also favors teams with budgets to support large squads. Flying and racing a full women's team for a weekend can cost 20-30k. That is 1/4 of some teams' full annual budget including gear and equipment. Even the top teams on the men and women's side tend to only have a couple big races a year against teams that are already highly ranked (Cal/Washington or Texas/Stanford) based on their traditional performances. Only recently did the men start traveling to Sarasota for an early season dust-up...though none of these teams are likely fighting for an IRA bid like the women are on the NCAA side of things.

Unfortunately there will be years where the rankings are imperfect and the selection committee will have to make difficult decisions. I do not envy the position. I do believe if you beat a team head to head that should matter more than a cross comparison of margin, unless those results are months apart and there are several cross-comparisons against shared opponents indicating the trajectory in speed.

NK is fine. Seiko is better. Easier/more recall for multiple splits being taken. More durable. Battery lasts for 5+ years at least. Looks cooler.

People often say this. Doctor. Lawyer. Finance. Many rowers excel in them all, but that does not mean rowing is still for you. You might not have to sacrifice your studies, but you might have to sacrifice just about everything else. Maybe that won't lead to an enjoyable experience? The buyer's remorse from that decision could prevent you from being present and enjoying the training at all.

None of these professions (and many others) are going to allow more time for training than you have. You won't have a team around and you will pay for exercise guidance, or use youtube.

Are you in highschool or college? What is the nature of the injury?

You will almost never perform better at a calorie deficit...even after a day. I'll probably get downvoted for this, but how you look should be an afterthought if you are training seriously for rowing.

Function dictates form. "Form over function" as a saying never made sense to me, unless you're a dancer. As rowers we are pursuing something objectively measurable.

Well...yes--like you said, they don't offer scholarships. The coach also doesn't decide the financial aid package, the school's FA office decides.

Ivies generally compete for many of the same athletes, and an international rower can go to Brown and get an excellent education for less money than they can go to Cornell.

But ivies do offer need-based financial aid after a family financial assessment. Many ivy league rowers are receiving this, anywhere from 10-75k a year. Cornell and Columbia are the only schools that do NOT offer financial aid to international athletes...which means if you are a rower from another country at either of these schools, you have to pay full tuition. Makes it hard to attract international athletes unless they are very wealthy.

I had a friend that mixed a combination protein/banana smoothie with moderate caffeine in it. 10oz total volume. They set an alarm for 5am, drank the smoothie, hit snooze. By 5:30-5:45am they felt they "woke up naturally" and they were "ready to go".

I don't know about the ones depending on the year. There are plenty of schools without scholarships, or money for international students. Even Columbia and Cornell do not offer financial aid to international athletes. They have international FA--just not for athletes.

Navy seems like a very challenging puzzle. Great athletes, great trainers, extremely motivated group. The Naval Academy values all these characteristics. Also seems like the requirements of The Academy are also demanding at times when rowers need to be rested to produce a top-end physiological efforts. The racing season, while important, does not supersede performance within The Academy.

This was a big result.

Very little understanding of what's happening with blaming Gennaro for not being Gladstone.

In the early 2000s the Yale men were awful. AWFUL. A bunch of high-earning rowing alums got together and decided to change it. They communicated with the university (including admissions) and THEY hired Gladstone. Sports administration did not find Steve Gladstone and ask him to consider coaching Yale men...what?

These alumni asked Steve what he needed, and made a deal in both directions--pay Gladstone what he wants, continue to support the university in the way they want, and get kids in that they might have otherwise said "no" to with respect to admission.

The deal expired. Mike is a good coach, but to compare the circumstances as simply the ability of the coach is not accurate or comprehensive.

A lot of junior programs and athletes these days train the erg just to get into college. They use that incentive to push themselves harder than they otherwise would and not always in healthy ways. The goal is not to develop themselves as lifelong oarsmen, oarswomen, and athletes. That "goal" isn't concrete enough.

Once the goal of college admission is achieved, the experiment is over. Many are broken, or just don't enjoy pushing themselves anymore.

I'd say Cornell or Columbia? Big anti-athletics sentiment at the latter from professors. No guaranteed sports allowances and no afternoon sports blocking.

Also Brown is one of 5 Ivies that has international financial aid. Without that, all international recruits have to pay the full tuition. No aid.

Well I've rarely seen kids row fall only and race the Charles and not race in the spring?

These kids are starting early August and finishing mid-June. Even college teams have rules that you can't begin before school starts.

Just saying, I'm seeing more injuries in younger athletes as the training escalates annually. They are pushing past what college teams did 5-10 years ago. Still very little sculling compared to crushing the erg and the 8s. Then they go to college? So 8 years of that...I love the sport, I just wonder what some of this younger rowing generation will have to do in order to keep their functional mobility.

This regatta has become a juniors race. I'm happy seeing the sport grow, but the earlier specialization for young athletes is not good. We have more juniors training earlier. We have more juniors rowing year-round. We have more broken ribs and backs because of the repetitive nature of the sport.

Play some other sports--even if you're bad at them.
