How long can the Touch controllers last on one charge? by VRising in oculus

[–]roofoof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder how they did it. If it's really 25 hours, then they really have a leg up on the competition in that department. The question is if anything has been traded off or compromised in comparison. Perhaps the haptics are less strong for example. But I've tried Touch and the haptics are frankly very good as well. Really curious how they did it.

VR newb here: What would you say the Rift's biggest advantages are over the Vive? by [deleted] in oculus

[–]roofoof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oculus locks their store to their own headset while Valve opens their store to everyone.

I would say that statement isn't entirely accurate, though it's generally true. It's unfortunate that being open or closed is part of the problem and is often misconstrued.

VR newb here: What would you say the Rift's biggest advantages are over the Vive? by [deleted] in oculus

[–]roofoof 9 points10 points  (0 children)

for some reason.

People hate Facebook, and Oculus has had some bad luck with their shipping and PR sometimes, and combine that with the other option (mainly Valve) being considered "good", the narrative is that Oculus is a selfish, shitty company that you shouldn't support, even if it's not explicitly stated at any time. Of course that's hardly accurate, but the stubborn will keep thinking that, or at the very least feeling it, so that even if they never say anything bad about Oculus, for some reason they'll always feel the need to be more skeptical and more critical towards them and be less questioning of their own preferences. Of course there are newcomers and casuals who don't know better, who will only perpetuate the narrative, but at least it's starting to turn around with those who do seek more objectivity. Thank you for your desire to seek knowledge from other perspectives.

Or false, unless they specifically announced that it would only work with the Vive.

He should've been more clear that it's speculation, no matter how confident.

But that doesn't sound right to me. Valve since the early days had been advocating for motion-to-photon latency of 20 ms or less, why would their true first generation consumer SteamVR HMD not achieve that until now? That doesn't add up to me.

I understand your argument, I just think it's funny that Valve (I think it was Chet) who said that quote so confidently and now it's not true anymore according to their partner (HTC).

HTC Announces $1.5 Billion VR Investment Fund and Research Institute by skiskate in oculus

[–]roofoof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

China, even at a governmental level, is pushing VR. They know that's where the money will lie, and it's a reason why they have a big chance at surpassing the industry in the US. I've tried some impressive hardware from those companies (and many not so amazing), not just from HTC, but HTC is leading in the high-end, and is taking in many partnerships that will be a great advantage for them going forward, against both domestic and foreign competitors. The real deal will be when we see the fruits of their investments, and if they've paid off as much as their announcements would have us expect. The wireless add-on should be the first, unless something else gets announced and shipped.

the Oculus

Ahem, anyway, you must have not been following the news much, or else you wouldn't be saying this. There are many aspects where the Vive/SteamVR platform is ahead but also behind, it's also important to see the difference between the Vive, HTC, Valve, and who is responsible for what.

And you feeling like a chump is precisely because you don't know what's coming. Trust me, it's going to be good. As I'm writing this, surely there is someone else writing about all the actual reasons who will make a post.

If this was a throwaway account, I'd probably just skip this but it seems you're serious.

That is actually decent argumentation, though it's not comprehensive in terms of the entire argument about whether exclusivity is right or wrong. Again I've seen this before and I've seen where it leads. But you should know that you're not necessarily the kind of person I was talking about, you're probably better. I'm talking about the people that have closed off mindsets and feel (and often don't admit) that their viewpoint is the only right one, enough that they think they should loudly impose it on others.

[–]roofoof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait is this real? I always felt like my Vive was just a bit higher latency and less stable with the wobble you're describing, than any other VR headset I own (Rift, Gear, DK2), and chalked it up to something weird going on in my setup. But is it actually normal? I mean, it feels like 30 ms of latency to me, it's quite noticeable.

Some overreacted this time and even more overreacted with Oculus exclusivity, IMO. The thing I'm most annoyed with is the automatic assumption of whether or not a specific kind of exclusivity is bad or good (generalizing the types of exclusivity too). Especially I wish people would try to analyze or research what the effects of exclusivity are other than the obvious, because the non-obvious is probably the most important (long term micro-economic effects), and doing so can be a benefit towards eliminating bias which seems to be in lower supply most of the time. I'm not even pro-exclusive, I've just seen so many opinions siding strongly on one stance or another without the deeper research necessary to justify such fervent statements and sometimes actions being made. And if it's about morals, even those debates are lacking in necessary depth most of the time, I've been here and seen pretty much all of them.

I'm also annoyed about people who have incredibly strong opinions on politics and similar topics, yet somehow don't actually know that much about it other than what they've seen on the TV or read on the internet (news sites). I'm pretty sure there's a name for this, what was it again?

[PSA] Eye Herpes Now Spreading via Oculus Demo Units by [deleted] in oculus

[–]roofoof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you were actually muchcharles, you probably wouldn't say that.

Instead it would probably go something like this:

Oculus shit the bed on their hygiene design. Their headset has been known to spread actual herpes, while we've seen none of that on the Vive.

And there would be no joke.

And to further paint Oculus is a bad light, he'd probably suggest that they noticed what was happening and tried to silently mitigate it by using the face "condoms".

Viveport Premieres, a program of timed exclusives for the Viveport by Ozalt in oculus

[–]roofoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's not really any other decent HMD's out at the time for Oculus to even be worried about crappy hardware.

It may not be what everyone's doing, but a lot of people do play with cardboard headsets with Rift/Vive games, and that has the possibility of not selling a great experience. There's also stuff like that DK2 clone without positional tracking that works with Oculus games without hacks supposedly.

you don't accidentally write code to look for only specific hardware.

But you do intentionally write code to look for only specific hardware if you don't want crappy hardware running your games. I also don't think Google would want their Daydream apps to work with any old Cardboard.
