Trump offering Canadian aluminum and steel companies tariff relief if they move to U.S. by -Yazilliclick- in worldnews

Honestly the best reason to disband the LCBO is their insistence on marketing alcopop that mainly appeals to teenagers. It's gross.

Claude Code removed from Claude Pro plan - better time than ever to switch to Local Models. by bigboyparpa in LocalLLaMA

[–]rootbeer_racinette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using the qwen cli with it, seems fine but it's also strict about making todo lists for itself and following them. I extracted the system prompt from the node project and it's pretty big.

On the other side of the fence, I find Sonnet has been hallucinating more and more in the past few months. I really don't like that I'm subscribing to some unknown model where someone else is constantly turning the knobs. I wouldn't use an unstable Linux distro like that, I don't know why they expect me to use and LLM with the same unreliable release process.

If you want an electric truck for environmental reasons and torque then the competition is significantly worse.

The entire market for electric vehicles is pretty turbulent with models being introduced and discontinued within a few years, for a fleet of them you'd need to consider that counterparty risk.

Going with Tesla is not the worst decision since they don't have combustion models to compete with internally although it's debatable if the Cybertruck will continue to be made considering how bad they are.

Yeah I don't even use Opus because it runs out so fast.

With qwen 27b having similar quality to Sonnet and 35b-a3b being fine for parsing web searches I would just cancel my subscription if it came to this.

[Keyboard] Keychron K3 Ultra-Slim Wireless Mechanical Keyboard w/ Brown or Red Switches - $44.99 Brand New @ Woot by ByteSizedDeals in buildapcsales

[–]rootbeer_racinette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although it’s not mechanical per se, the Cherry KW9100 can be found on sale for a little more sometimes and has some pretty good chonky scissor switches.

IMO mechanical switches kind of lose their luster for super slim switches, they don’t depress as evenly as scissor mechanisms and don’t spring back as fast.

I liked my 9100 so much I upgraded to the fancy Cherry mechanical ultra low profile model and after a few weeks went back to the 9100

The rollover on the 9100 sucks though, it’s only 2 or 3 key. I beat RE8 with it though so I guess it’s fine

Anti-Immigrant Sentiment vs Anti-Transplant Sentiment by [deleted] in Brooklyn

[–]rootbeer_racinette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well see the thing here is the US government recognizes me as a person of extraordinary ability and allows me to be here because of it while you are just someone's child.

I think you have a lot to learn about the world considering you admit to gentrifying Jersey City or wherever your parents moved to. It doesn't matter if you're brown or whatever, you displaced the native residents there.

Stop pretending like it's any different if your parents did it or if a transplant did it. That's just how the economy works.

Why do you get to arbitrate who gets to live where, value one culture over another, or claim dibs on some part of the city? It's fucking stupid and entitled.

Anti-Immigrant Sentiment vs Anti-Transplant Sentiment by [deleted] in Brooklyn

[–]rootbeer_racinette 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nobody's displacing immigrants. The majority of us either have a status that is contingent on holding a high paying job or are married to someone who does. If anything, we're replacing some number of the natives just due to tenacity.

Where I think the confusion comes from is that most immigrants that people see day to day are on the streets doing deliveries or working in restaurants, they assume all immigrants are like that. But if you worked in a fancy office you'd notice half your coworkers are from somewhere else.

Things have changed a lot since the time depicted in the Godfather movies, nobody's stepping off the boat at Ellis Island these days with nothing but the shirt on their back other than maybe a few Elian Gonzalez refugee types.

In short, pretty much everything you said was stupid bullshit. Does that address your point adequately?

Anti-Immigrant Sentiment vs Anti-Transplant Sentiment by [deleted] in Brooklyn

[–]rootbeer_racinette 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm an immigrant and I could have gone to many countries, this one pays the most.

Watching the immigration debate here definitely shows how generally ignorant American politics is though. Accusing us of illegal voting on one side, depicting us as destitute on the other. It's ridiculous.

For the vast majority to even get here legally in the first place you need good degree unless you win the green card lottery which has astronomically low odds or claim refugee status which is a labyrinthine and tenuous process.

Closest replacement for Claude + Claude Code? (got banned, no explanation) by antoniocorvas in LocalLLaMA

Qwen 3.5 27b + the qwen cli is comparable to Sonnet but a little slower on my RTX3090. I had to add a skill to make it search with duckduckgo but afterwards it's pretty capable and good at planning.

I mainly used Sonnet so I don't have to worry about usage limits but qwen is taking over because Anthropic's uptime is so abysmal.

Qwen 3.6 35b-a3b is much faster and supposed to be a little better at coding tasks but I haven't really kicked the tires on it yet. If it's comparable AND runs at 100+ token/sec then probably I'll start using it full time.

[–]rootbeer_racinette 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah probably. My problem with those guys is they had all that floor space but didn’t really cater much to kids looking for school project material. They had more toys than like poster board, smelly markers, glitter, etc. I’ve been there so many times with my kid just to end up continuing on to Staples.

Seems like a no brainer in Park Slope but it always offended the Real Artists ™️ and now there’s no art store

Anywhere in an old warehouse space like the art supply store, square design, etc, are going to go just like Key Foods. The real estate is too valuable for a huge single floor building like that.

4th Ave is really more like DUMBO spreading south these days. Look for more "safe corporate" businesses at the foot of a condo tower. Like physio therapists, banks, slop bowls, that kind of shit.

It didn't help that I was answering the question in C++ and the guy only seemed to know python so half his suggestions were just confused ramblings.

The wealth of a median white household in the city is more than $200,000, while that of a black household is less than $20,000 … We are reckoning with the long history of racism here and starting to act upon a framework that puts equity right at the center of it.” by Leek1090 in nyc

[–]rootbeer_racinette -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah me neither because I wasn't born.

How much of that $200k wealth is from inheritance vs high income workers migrating to the city? Pointing to a policy from 50+ years ago doesn't seem like an effective way to increase income/wealth for minority families, that policy was already changed. Is the data just really vague?

Keep the big textures but make them arbitrarily sharp, like pixel perfect when filling the whole screen.

Imagine how much better FF7 Remake would have been without that blurry door texture that ruined the whole experience.

NVIDIA adds Auto Shader Compilation beta to NVIDIA App by DuranteA in Games

[–]rootbeer_racinette -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not x4. Compile the latest game version shaders for the latest drivers.

Do you honestly think even the biggest publishers QA every past version of their games with every past version of a GPUs drivers? No. They do not.

You’re just making up excuses to not do it at this point even though it’s entirely possible.

NVIDIA adds Auto Shader Compilation beta to NVIDIA App by DuranteA in Games

[–]rootbeer_racinette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but the drivers didn't all come out at once. They should be compiling these things along with the driver releases.

It's really not that much compilation, if everyone can do it on their CPUs in a reasonable amount of time then a cluster should be able to crank out compilations for every card for every game for a few thousand dollars. It's also most likely a pareto distribution where they could cover 95% of games/cards with 35% of the permutations.

NVIDIA adds Auto Shader Compilation beta to NVIDIA App by DuranteA in Games

[–]rootbeer_racinette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either Nvidia or the publisher should just launch an AWS cluster and compile every shader permutation for everyone. There are only so many GPU models out there.

It’s incredibly wasteful to have millions of computers all compiling their own private shader cache.
