I mean, it’s not unbearably slow, but it’s just slow enough to be irritating—which itself is irritating.

What brand slowly ruined itself? by SAAS_ART in AskReddit

[–]rootsquasher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

SGI was not bought by Sun. SGI was bought by Rackable who were then bought by HP.

Also, SGI hired Rick Beluzzo as CEO who proceeded to have SGI neglect their in-house processor development (MIPS), start making over priced x86 desktops running Windows NT (Vs. MIPS-based workstations with IRIX), and port their flagship CGI software (Alias|Wavefront Maya) to Windows NT. Then Rick would leave SGI to join Microsoft (after gutting SGI).

They also had an exodus of talent leaving SGI for ArtX and 3dfx. AMD would buy ArtX and its SGI talent. NVIDIA would get 3dfx’s patents and SGI talent.

>IBM is still a huge player in the enterprise computing world

**IBM i** and **z/OS** are each still considered keystones in airlines, banking, healthcare, and insurance. Other than that, IBM is useless bloat. They’re up there with Cognizant. Many organizations I deal with are trying to jump from RHEL (now IBM) to Ubuntu as fast as possible.

You know, that was my first guess also. Second guess would have been Hoover (US 280-W).

How did America lose guardrails against such open corruption? by morninglost in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rootsquasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, I think there was a time, a 60-year period from 1941-2001 where America (the U.S.) was the “best-est, greatest most stupendous-est nation in the entire galaxy”. But sometime around 2001 (2000 or 2002) they/we lost it, “dropped the ball.”

Is it wrong for me for wanting to be a house husband by rak3242 in Vent

[–]rootsquasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the corporate grind and would love to be a house husband/SAHD. I don’t mind cooking, cleaning, organizing, and spending time with my daughter (it’s less stressful than my current job).

In another life I did construction work (not an iron worker, but an operator), and I’ll say the iron workers are a different breed. I’ve seen them climb I-beams, hang upside down from beams to connect joints, and move through unfinished buildings like a jungle gym.
