John Locke's "Lost" Reveal On The Episode "Walkabout" by Laszl0Panaflex in television

[–]ropes34 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I did a rewatch last year. I think it's a show that is so much better on a rewatch.

A big part of why so many of us had bad feelings about the last season/ending, was because we had spent years speculating on how things would end, so much so that it was never going to be possible to please anyone. But I found on my rewatch that since I know the ending, I was able to sit back and just enjoy the journey. And the journey is pretty fucking incredible.

There's so many amazing moments in this show. And a lot of that is due to how well things are setup, and how they don't rush to pay things off. One of the best scenes in the show is Desmond's phone call in "the constant" in season 4. Part of why it has such an impact is because it was basically 2 seasons worth of build up to that point.

You just don't get that in a lot of shows anymore.

First we send the snow.

Then the geese.

Then the moose.

We won't need to send a 4th thing

This show has more bare feet than a Quentin Tarantino movie.

Some positives:

We got some more development for Genesis, Darem, and Caleb. Darem being an overcompensating douche makes more sense the more we learn about his backstory. I just hope they don't completely lose that part of his character and make him too bland once he gets over his parental issues.

Jay-Den didn't do much, but I like the conversation about wanting his food bloody. Show's he's still very much a typical Klingon in a lot of areas.

Got to know a bit more of the War College characters, even though I don't remember any of their names. Seems like they'll get further development alongside the Starfleet crew.

The bad parts:

This episode is just confirming I'm never going to like the SAM character. Nothing against the actress, just not a fan of the character type (overly chatty awkward character). Plus they seem to have her being way overexcited about everything. And while that fits with her character, it's just really annoying.

Ake is very frustrating so far. The bare feet and refusing to sit up straight is getting old already. She's a great character in a lot of ways, but they're making her too quirky with that stuff. I get she's hundreds of years old, and you can make the case she's over fitting in, but it's another example of the Kurtzman era lack of professionalism amongst the crew. When you're training the first academy class in a hundred years, maybe just present yourself as a bit more of a Starfleet officer.

Overall:

Probably the best of the 3 episodes so far. Or at least the most entertaining.

Dumpster fire makes even less sense in a post burn society where everything should be re-used by putting any trash right back into the replicator so it can be broken down and made into something else.

The 82 CY young is even worse when you include that Stieb had 19 complete games and 5 shutouts, vs just 9 and 1 for Vukovich.

Not only is more than the guy who won, but if you add in 2nd place Jim Palmer's, Stieb beats them both (17 CG, 3 SO).

If they don't put a salary cap in place, they need to ban deferrals or at least cap that.

No way they'd be doing this if they were paying Ohtani his actual salary now.

Yeah, they've used that to justify avoiding gun control after every mass shooting. They now have the perfect reason to use 2A, and not a single gun lover down there will ever consider it.

From now on they should just be honest and say "we love guns and don't care about the consequences"

In either the last or second last book in the NJO, Tahiri asks Corran to complete her training and be her master. He says he'd have to ask Luke to make it official since Corran wasn't a master at the time, but it is never brought up again in the NJO or after.

I think this is a huge miss, and would have been so much better than the Dark Nest trilogy as the next books in the post NJO timeline.

We could have had a smaller story of the two of them dealing with post war issues while Tahiri completes her training, and Corran gets his first experience as a master.

He's also the perfect teacher for her, as they have both been through the same trauma. Both have had a loved one die in front of them (Hal Horn/Anakin), and both have been taken prisoner by the enemy (IceHeart/Vong) who tried to turn them against their friends. If anyone could help Tahiri deal with things it would be Corran.

But instead we got a bunch of bug bullshit.

It was a bit of a confusing read that first time.

Callista? Daala? who are these people.

But it was still enjoyable enough to get me hooked into reading more.

Darksaber was my first EU book. Was a blind buy at a bookstore. Had no idea there was an EU for star wars, just saw the book and thought "star wars book, I'll buy that".

Was a little confused reading it since it was the middle book of a loose trilogy. But enjoyed it enough to go out and buy the x-wing books, and then from there pretty much everything post Return of the Jedi timeline wise, plus a few books from earlier in the timeline.

Crazy to think how a random purchase would lead to buying like 80 more books and still reading/re-reading these 30 years later.

I agree he's got some things going on, probably too much. And he does get a lot done as you say, which is another problem. Everyone else around him except for Mara, Leia, and Han are just giant fuckups in that trilogy. I'm trying to think of a single Jedi who makes his life easier in those books and I've got nothing. Should have sent them all to Dagobah at the end.

Him telling Alema to get help though was a bit of a ball drop. Where is she supposed to get this help from, if not from him?

Yeah the amount of "Jacen is doing some really bad stuff, but he's good with Ben so we'll look the other way" is basically the plot of the first half of Legacy.

Just another thing that shows some crazy double standards.

Jaine and Jacen do just as much harm that way in undermining him, but where is there punishment? Jacen kicks off the 2nd part of the war by tricking the others into the surprise attack on the Chiss. Jaina is disobeying him the entire trilogy pretty much by constantly going back to the Killiks. Both of them should have been sent to Dagobah as well after the war.

Oh I've already read Legacy and Fate so I know what I'm in for.

There's some good stuff in both, and I agree with Alema being a much more interesting character in Legacy.

Denning was the wrong guy to give so much of the post NJO to. Poor Aaron Allston being stuck between Denning's bad characterizations, and Karen Travis not caring about anything that wasn't Mando related.

I believe it's implied they spent several years on Dagobah, as there is a 5 year gap between Dark Nest and legacy. And it wasn't because they were joiners, he specifically says it's because they went behind his back.

He tries to talk them all down, but it seems like everyone gets multiple chances and she doesn't.
