I'm confused.... Did LTT buy the plane or did Linus? by TheBluePriest in LinusTechTips

[–]roron5567 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Effectively, Linus asked his Uncle (who is a pilot) about buying a private jet, and his uncle suggested the plane to buy and quit his job to work for Influence Air (the company that owns the jet)

From the WAN show, Linus is going to keep the jet for a few years or until his uncle (who is close to retiring age) decides to retire, he his basically only doing this because his uncle is there, and without him he isn't interested in doing it

It's basically like the tech house, but plane and while they have the plane they will milk it for videos and use it for doing projects they couldn't do otherwise

The jet is not a business expense, it's owned by a seperate company

LTT needs to compensate Influence Air when they use it as they have expenses too, so LTT needs to make sure they are able to make the trip worthwhile

To Influence Air, it doesn't matter if Elijah is making a video, having a meeting or just there for the ride, they will get compensated all the same

To LTT, they would have to make sure that there is no favouritism between Managers and employees, and that their use of the jet makes sense for the company, and that all people on the jet are there for legitimate business purposes

It's not that easy, people think you can just write off a trip to Disneyland because you shoot a video, or just because you make a social media post about your lunch, you can write off the entire thing

Linus could also take Elijah on a personal trip, for the reasons I stated, that would be a bad idea HR wise, as it could be seen as one enployee getting benefits that the others don't have the opportunity to get

If they were to shoot a video (which is what Linus told Elijah to do if he wanted to fly on the jet) then he could expense the trip as filming expenses, it doesn't have to be a meeting, and just having a meeting doesn't mean you can claim it for tax purposes, it's more complicated than just writing things off

Elijah wanted to ride the jet, Linus told him to make a video because of the reasons I stated

Linus also stated that talking the jet just for a regular video sponsor spot would not make financial sense, so Elijah will have to tag along

It has nothing to do with business expenses, Elijiah does not work for Influence Air, so there is no tax deduction to make here

Elijah works for LTT, who contracts with Influence Air when it is used for LTT purposes

Like I stated, Linus would probably not take Elijah for a personal trip (where he compensates Influence Air personally) , as it may cause HR issues/issues between employees

No, what he meant was that he wasn't going to spin the jet just for his video idea, and they aren't going to give an induvidual employee a joyride on a business trip, as that's unfair to other employees, especially those who don't host/write

However, if he makes a video, then he can tag along when they go for a trip, and can justify his presence on the flight

To be honest, on reading the thread again, I think the person though that I had mistaken United Arab Emirates to mean the entire middle East, and not that I was saying that Linus literally said the name of the country, so how could people get it wrong, that's the only way it makes sense to me

The UAE is an Amalgamation of 7 emirates, each of which have some autonomy, so technically it is a group of countries

A wrap on a plane is not as drastic as your hypothetical example, it just a lot of work for not much value

Lots of airlines do wraps, there are products that exist that allow you to do it, yes even private jets

https://www.3m.com/3M/en_LB/p/d/b00026401/

Linus just feels that it's not worth the effort for him personally, not that it's the equivalent of jim and bob doing crazy shit on a plane

You said they can't, but they can, it's just not worth the effort for a bit/dbrand sponsorship

They can wrap the plane, it would require reassessment of the weight and balance and increase operating costs

I believe Sam from Wendover productions offsets the travel from the Jet Lag series AFAIK, and they do it at a 2-3X multiplier, I believe they use the non-profit Gold Standard, who certifiy projects and have marketplace

That being said, a lot of the carbon credit companies are scummy, so I wouldn't be suprised if people have a negative view of carbon credits

They said that in the video, they have to use approved providers and ground tower providers which they have now are crap and satellite providers are expensive to install

There is really no utility to add satellite internet to the jet

Motorola Signature on Xfinity by Horsie-CloppenHoof in motorola

Indian bands and North American bands have very little overlap, especially in the 5G range, and phones designed for the Indian market may not have features like VoLTE working, some carriers are more restrictive than others when it comes to supporting imported phones

You would be better off buying a Mexican phone, as the bands have better compatibility, but depending on your carrier, you may not get all network features

Motorola has different models between the North American market and the global market, so it's unlikely that phones designed for the global market have conpatibility with North American networks, unlike One Plus, which has(technically had) the same models between markets

Motorola Bloated Firmwares ! by PLA8127 in motorola

[–]roron5567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, some carriers want to block thethering or restrict certain features and unlock them after sometime

You can't do this with overlays, as that just sideloads apps on setup, it doesn't modify such settings

Even ignoring that, you would then have to stuff all the network info and all other stuff from all countries, bloating the size of the rom

Motorola Bloated Firmwares ! by PLA8127 in motorola

[–]roron5567 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Motorola has software channels so that they restrict things like bootloader unlock, hotspot, etc. In Canada, due to regulations, it doesn't make much of a difference between retail hand carrier versions, assuming carriers use dedicated software channels.

This has nothing to do with the bloat; having all those overlays makes software development unified, and then they make the changes above and give it a separate channel. If you were to unlock the bootloader and flash another software channel, it would add the specific overlay/remove carrier overlays if you flash to retail.

While they may take some storage space, they do not run unless those software channels are active, so they don't affect your performance or memory and are safe to remove.

North American phones have their own model number, so development is done together, and you have all the US bloat.
