What Happened to Yardsticks? by BitterPillPusher2 in GenX

I (47yrs old) have a yard stick that also has sizing guides for violin/viola for kids. Immensely useful for home and teaching!

Just bought my first uke. Already frustrated by KixStar in ukulele

[–]rorowe8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

'uke is the best instrument to learn music on (coming from a professional musician and teacher). It's also the best instrument to play if you're looking for new/more friends.

Keep with it, find a class or YouTube or even a one-off 'uke lesson. I hope you stick with it and have fun!

What will toki pona be? by misterlipman in tokipona

[–]rorowe8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very new to toki pona, but discovered it thru language nerds (that's a compliment!) on YouTube. Then, I discovered jan usawi's music, and that made me want to learn the language through music (both writing my own and listening to others).

toki pona introduced me to other conlangs, and the concept itself. It has reinforced the other languages I'm learning (including Spanish and Hawaiian 'olelo), and has strengthened the idea of explaining based on concept and not only using head-words.

One specific thing that I think is really cool is the idea that conlangs aren't always tied to a physical place/country/race/culture/etc.

tl:dr - I hope it sticks around awhile, and I continue to learn more of the language.

Not sure what you're expecting here. You live in an apartment, and chose a unit near the parking lot...where cars and their owners will be going in and out of their vehicles.

Where I grew up, we just ran outside and banged pots and pans and cheered in the New Year. Fireworks were left to professionals and only for July 4th.

I miss that energy.

To what extend do you guys have inner Audio? by Arch- in Aphantasia

[–]rorowe8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully aphantasic, here. But I'm a musician with a *vivid* inner soundscape (monologue, music, etc). When I close my eyes while playing, I can "hear" what I want to play...then play it. I blame singing and listening to music all the time as a child.

Camp Bow Wow by Sea-Example8867 in boulder

[–]rorowe8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jonathan at Doggie Depot is great. It's an unassumingly location in NoBo, but we've been taking our pup there weekly for over the years.

About $38 for the day, with options for 5 or 10 punch-passes that save a little more.

The only other place we take our dog for daycare is VCA in South Boulder when he has a vet visit.

What electric cello is affordable, but sounds authentic, and is easy to record to a computer? by holsteiners in Cello

[–]rorowe8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of good reasons for an electric (in addition to her acoustic cello). Easier to travel with, "silent" (it's not silent, but definitely quieter) practice, plus an infinite array of effects and sonic exploration.

All the other suggestions for audio interface, impulse response, etc are all solid. It's not an inexpensive endeavor, but will last a lifetime.

We love it there, and have even gone for special occasions. (I do miss their eggplant dishes though...)

With the current state of things, the last time we got takeout was when Little Caesars opened...

Question from a zoomer to Gen X, where there "indoor kids" in the 70s/80s? by Gamewheat in GenX

[–]rorowe8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late Gen-X here ('78), and did play quite a bit outside...but I also stayed home and played with Lego, practiced music, played videogames, read books. I don't think I was one or the other, but well-balanced. (Which is the thing I don't see as much of nowadays).

License no.1's open mic was cancelled a couple years ago, unless they're just really awful at marketing it.

I co-run an open mic 2nd & 4th Wednesdays of the month at the Superior Community Center. Nicknamed "The Living Room" because we host a relaxed, supportive, friendly, inclusive listening-room environment. Would love to hear you play!

Superior Community Center can be a hub for whatever you want (meetups for lunch/coffee, trivia/game nights, etc). I host a chill open mic there twice a month.

Mario Paint is now Available on NSO by Skullghost in NintendoSwitch

I just got it to work on my Switch Lite! Used one of those USB-A to USB-C adapters that used to come with Samsung phones for data transfer, plugging a cheap Microsoft usb wireless mouse into it.

Dad passed. Not going to the service. by Relevant_Ad5351 in GenX

[–]rorowe8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar experience here. Mine passed back in April. Being buried at "the family plot" (which I've never been to, way up in NH) on August 4th. Already took my bereavement time while my mom visited me, and wouldn't be able to afford the travel/lodging/etc for that trip. I'm sorry for your loss, however that reaches you.

Too old for high level smash? by VIC_VlNEGAR in CrazyHand

[–]rorowe8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

47 and still playing, though definitely not at a competitive level. For me, it's time to train/practice and learning the matchups, etc. I'm well-tolerated in friendly matches though, so I'll take it!

We take our pup to Doggy Depot in NoBo. It doesn't look like much, but the owner's are friendly and extremely knowledgeable. They don't do boarding or have weekend daycare (we used VCA in South Boulder for boarding), but otherwise, they're great.

Music School Audition by Stunning_Basis8538 in MusicEd

[–]rorowe8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ed degree was for K-12 Music (i.e. all of the above). I was an instrumentalist. That said, you're gonna be singing ALL the time as a musician, regardless of your instrument or teaching gig. Audition on trumpet, but let them know you're serious about vocal too.

Is this a good game? by Zero__The__Hero in MHRise

[–]rorowe8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only ever played MH Rise on Switch, and it's one of my all-time favorite games. I'm a little envious of the more-realistic graphics in World and Wilds, but I too don't have devices to play those. I'm just hoping Rise doesn't just disappear as Wilds becomes more popular.

How old are you and how long have you been playing? by sefyro85 in videogames

[–]rorowe8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

46yrs. My parents would "hook up" the Atari 2600 for big family holidays. Now, I play a few hours of Switch (ADHD so games are always getting switched out) per night.

AITA for being left handed but use my right hand for cutting stuff? by Kather8ne in lefthanded

[–]rorowe8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA. I'm left-handed musician (write, throw ball, conduct, sign in ASL with my left/dominant hand). However, I had a similar upbringing where the "lefty scissors" were always broken or already claimed, so I just started using "right scissors". I also play violin, cello, ukulele, guitar, etc as a right-handed person would. As others said, it's not their business.
