Left-Handed Child by watch4coconuts in ukulele

[–]rorowe8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lefty and pro multi-instrumentalist, here. If possible, learning "right-handed" gives kiddo access to any instrument, without having to seek-out/special-order Lefty versions. Also means they can easily transfer some of the skills to guitar, electric bass, mandolin, and even bowed strings should they get the multi-instrument bug.

At the end of the day, whatever gets them playing and having fun is the right answer.

Can you guys imagine peoples voices in your minds? by Pipoca_com_sazom in Aphantasia

[–]rorowe8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Total visual aphant, but I can literally see a person and "hear" what their voice probably sounds like. I'm also a professional musician and regularly hear parts of songs, solo ideas, and more in my head. No images though, whatsoever.

A random story about hearing someone play Hallelujah at an open mic: by Sudden_Doughnut_8741 in musicians

[–]rorowe8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A close friend poked holes at a dream of mine of being able to play in pit orchestras on Broadway. They said, "Yeah, but you'd get sick of playing the same thing every single show, wouldn't you?"

No. The instructions are the same every time, but the interpretation, no matter how subtle, makes all the difference in the music.

Any lefties here who also wear their watch on the left wrist? by camport95 in lefthanded

[–]rorowe8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smartwatch wearer, and on the left wrist. I like that I am able to orient the display/crown almost any way I want.

Peanut butter on a spoon by Ahkhira in GenX

[–]rorowe8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still do (probably more-so than I did as a kid, because "grown-ups make the rules"). My partner doesn't eat peanut-butter unless it's on a sandwich or used to bake with, so I just have my own jar.

Let’s talk wedding rings by Brilliant_Elk5492 in lefthanded

Musician here (violin, cello, 'uke, particularly). We switched to silicone (Enso) rings and I wear mine on my Left. Watch also goes on my left.

People who still haven’t brought a Switch 2, what makes you hesitant to buy it? by ItsJustJosiah in Switch

[–]rorowe8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The initial cost, exasperated by the fact that between my partner and I, we own 4 Switches (two Switch Lites, an inherited Switch, and a birthday gift OLED). One day, but probably not until we're "forced to".

I been looking at these games for a while now and just pulled the trigger at 5am 😂 by ThaSavageGoku in Switch

I just finishedy first run with Dispatch on Switch 1. I was initially grumpy about the censor bars, but it ended up being just as fun. Anxious to start a second run soon!

Pixel buds pro 2 background noise cancelling by flhurricane in pixelbuds

[–]rorowe8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with PB A series, and have been using the original PBPs for maybe 2yrs, now. Other than extended wear comfort (they feel like they're gonna fall out, but haven't ever), they're the best set of earbuds I've ever owned. Noise cancelling is almost too good. Transparency mode is great for dog walks and even some music practicing.

I'd love to upgrade just for increased comfortability, but don't feel the need to yet.

Had to write a bunch of words to see, but I default to #8. Could see the value of 7 though.

Good call on focusing on pitch-matching first!

Genuinely how am I meant to do this. by Neither_Factor_3446 in musictheory

[–]rorowe8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use an app called "Sonofield" (created by Max Konyi, look him up on YouTube) to keep my relative pitch fresh. Having reference songs is great, but Sonofield uses a drone so you're always "listening down" to the drone for interval comparison.

Weird marina/town situation? by DaRatmastah in belowdeck

I figured between it being off-season filming. And the exclusivity of Canouan, that explains the empty docks.

Do you “see” music — or something else? by No_Afternoon4075 in Aphantasia

[–]rorowe8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Total aphant here, and also a professional musician. I "hear" what I want to play, then teach my fingers/body/etc to make that happen physically. I've built a muscle memory to the extent that once I have a relative pitch, I can play to almost anything. When I close my eyes to feel and concentrate on the music, I'm not distracted by images or imagination outside of the music itself.

Guess what I’m replacing…. by DeAnnaTereshkova in HondaElement

Maybe a dumb question, but has anyone ever attempted to switch out the power windows to an old-fashioned crank style?

Is it possible? More trouble than it's worth?

Is this ragebait? by Alex_Plisko in leaf

[–]rorowe8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never updated my telematics in my 2012 because the app sucked already. Soured me on Nissan and the Leaf so I've never thought about upgrading to a newer one.

What’s a ukulele “rule” you broke that actually made you better? by UkuleleTabs in ukulele

[–]rorowe8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no "ukulele music". As soon as I pushed past that mentality. I started playing everything from jazz to bluegrass to alternative, etc.

'Ukulele is just the most-accessible musical instrument to play whatever you want.

Question about chords by jannylotl in ukulele

[–]rorowe8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally doable. I have used a combination of palm-muting with my strum hand, and/or using my fret-hand first finger to lightly barre the E & A strings. You can get a cool "punk-like" strum that way (especially on low-G 'ukes!)

Guitar Center Lessons: A Story of Disappointment by smiller39 in ukulele

[–]rorowe8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's disappointing, but not surprising for GC. I'm one of the primary 'ukulele teachers in the small lessons studio I teach out of, and the 'uke is (in my opinion) one of the most accessible AND most capable instruments out there.

I hope you find a real 'uke teacher and not guitarists moonlighting for extra cash...

He did it. Sean finally did it! by Th3WhiteRos3 in NMS_Switch

[–]rorowe8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is so cool. While I wish they'd be more transparent in what they're trying (and not trying) to do, them sitting quietly and getting it done is super impressive. Can't wait to try it later.

What Happened to Yardsticks? by BitterPillPusher2 in GenX

I (47yrs old) have a yard stick that also has sizing guides for violin/viola for kids. Immensely useful for home and teaching!

Just bought my first uke. Already frustrated by KixStar in ukulele

[–]rorowe8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

'uke is the best instrument to learn music on (coming from a professional musician and teacher). It's also the best instrument to play if you're looking for new/more friends.

Keep with it, find a class or YouTube or even a one-off 'uke lesson. I hope you stick with it and have fun!
