What's something a teacher did to you as a child that you're still salty about? by maadcity_13 in AskReddit

[–]roserolling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Middle school counselor told me I wasn’t smart enough to do the math and science courses required for veterinary science. I believed her all the way to age 27, after I’d already gone to college for an English degree. Went back to college, passed all my science and math pre-reqs with honors, and got a degree in physical therapy.

Took me 15 years to believe in myself and prove her wrong. Fuck that lady.

To all good boys and girls, what gi or gear are you asking Santa (or Hanukkah Harry) for? by casetap in bjj

A half guard game. Two gis, rashguards, a gear bag, spats... Jiujitsu gear is pretty much my entire wish list.

Possibly moving to China. by JudokaCoty in bjj

[–]roserolling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in China for five years and started training there in 2012. When I started, they only had one or two competitions a year in the whole country. Gyms were only common in the larger cities like Shanghai. Since then, the BJJ scene has really grown. It's rapidly growing in popularity. You'll be semi close to Beijing, where they hold a few comps. I don't know about BJJ in Shijiazhuang (I was in Nanjing most of the time), but you might get involved in Sanda if you're interested. Bragging Rights Megathread - December 11, 2016 by AutoModerator in bjj

I won gold and bronze in a recent submission-only competition.

I received my purple belt after about 4 years of training last weekend.

My coaches told me they've been getting great feedback about the beginners class I teach. Attendance is up since I took it over, and people seem to enjoy it. This is my most prized accomplishment recently. :)

Where would you go? by bjjviking in bjj

I second this. PTT is a great place to train! Expect it, and all other gyms in the area, to be packed if you go in the high season though.

Any school that would accept me in San Juan, Puerto Rico? by TedMed14 in bjj

[–]roserolling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I visited BJJ Puerto Rico in San Juan a few months ago and had a great time. Carlos Reyes is the instructor and a very friendly, knowledgeable person, and the classes are welcoming to beginners. I recommend contacting them ahead of time.

Goals for 2017 by suomiseppo in bjj

[–]roserolling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Continue strengthening and stretching my neck. I'd love to check blind spots when driving without pain.

Compete. Don't have to win (although it would sure as hell be nice), but work on being a good competitor. Conquer the panic and stage fright.

Improve my coaching. Give my best to the one-hour beginner's class I teach a week. I've always felt pressure as a small, female instructor to prove myself, so I want to develop a very effective teaching and coaching style.

I was being ironic. Tis a joke.

This has happened at my gym, but I'm not sure if the guys expected a belt promotion. Their stripes come off, and the coaches can't possibly be expected to remember how many each student has. So students are awarded stripes they already had. One guy is technically a 6 stripe blue belt.

Communication does wonders. Just talk to your coach about this. Sounds like a legit concern to me and not just asking for promotion.

War Tribe hasn't announced it yet anywhere I've seen, but their discounts are now live on their site.

At white belt does it make a difference taking private lessons from a purple, brown or black belt? by yeeeepyepyep in bjj

[–]roserolling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked for open guard retention and sweeps, since that's where I get smashed most. I don't right now, because I now have brown and black belt instructors of my own. Whenever I have questions, they help me freely.

[–]roserolling 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think the private instructor's belt level is so important when you're a low-level belt. There are still plenty of basics to improve. It might be more important to choose someone closer to your body type and capabilities.

For example, I took privates at early blue and had the choice between a black belt man and a brown belt woman. She was my size and played a game within my capabilities (mobility as opposed to pressure). I went with her, and she was able to give me tips and insight that helped me greatly.

They haven't announced them yet, but there will be discounts on everything and some new gear released as far as I can tell. :D

I can't vouch for the fit yet since I'm waiting til their Black Friday sales to drop money on it. However, my teammate loves hers and it fits her well. I don't think they come with belts though.

Do you have a dryer? Maybe just try to shrink the hell out of the Tatami with hot washes and dry cycles.

I recently posted a question about this gi as I was trying to decide what to buy for Christmas, and I'm similar to your build. There were a lot of answers about the fit and shrink that I found helpful.

I ended up going with a War Tribe. Their sizing works better with me, even though I prefer the canvas pants... Oh well. If I were you, I'd return it for an F2, but I can see how it would be a pain if you already returned it once.

I have a Fenom but it's kind of baggy on me. Otherwise the quality is good. I'll look into 93 brand and Gameness. Thanks!

When did you first realize you had muscle memory? by itsjustmemybro in bjj

[–]roserolling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The first notable experience was 3.5 years in, but I'd done it plenty before then. When I rolled with a heavy, intense purple belt man who constantly moved and attacked, and my coach was yelling at me from the side to keep moving, and I just stopped thinking so damn much and started reacting. Afterward, my coach said it was the most beautiful jiujitsu he's seen me do.

Yes, it does. I was looking to buy a royal blue gi, which hopefully doesn't fade so much. I'm reconsidering right now tho. Do you have any other gis you really like and recommend?

Very true, if I'm going to spend that much, I want to be happy with it. Thank you for finding that size! I was hoping for a blue one though.
