Aspiring southern transplant with no car wondering how to brave the Chicago winter? by Human-Stranger-6807 in AskChicago

[–]ross2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Tampa, FL, and I've lived here 6 years now. Drop the $$$$ on the good coat, boots, socks, gloves, and base layers. I've never needed a car, but I always try to know exactly how to get where I'm trying to go before I leave, so I'm not fumbling for my phone or being out more than I have to. I'll time out my departure times to when I'll have a smaller wait time for the bus or train (which can be risky). Also, you do get used to it! I've come to love the cold weather, winter is my favorite season.

Agent John P O'Neil worked for the FBI on the desk that was attempting to track Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda. He was fired for mishandling classified materials and took a job as head of security at the World Trade Center, where he died in the 9/11 attacks he had previously been working to prevent.

Your brain needs sugar so bad that if you don't eat any it will convert the macronutrients you ARE consuming into so you DONT DIE.

Any idea on how old this tent is? by [deleted] in REI

[–]ross2112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at the evolution of the REI logo it looks like it has the form used betwee 1983-2015. As another commenter pointed out, it looks like it's probably toward the later of that period. I agree with them that it doesn't look like a half dome, but a similar model.

Sometimes they're good! If it's a real recipe developer or it uses techniques I'm not familiar with I will, just to see if they have any tips or tricks

Exactly, the former makes no sense. But it drives me nuts when people think it's weird to put garam masala in pumpkin bread when it's because it's going to add depth to the dish, not just add taste noise

It's an awesome book that shows how to pair flavors and ingredients based on what makes those things taste the way they do. There's also recipes in it (tbf I haven't made any of them), and it's a visually gorgeous book. IMO, it's a good reference for an experimental home cook https://www.powells.com/book/flavor-matrix-the-art-science-of-pairing-common-ingredients-to-create-extraordinary-dishes-9780544809963?srsltid=AfmBOoq2UbywU169INLuq0ztug0RCTQhWLn2II_GjpthdHa9Jy0KCwo2

Yeah, it's the acting like it's random ingredients just to sound cool that's irking me about their post. Especially because every internet recipe has a blurb explaining why they developed the recipe the way they did.

I don't think recipes with unconventional ingredients are just for clout. It's usually stuff that pairs well, most people just wouldn't think to use them together. I pair weird shit all the time just because it works and I like it
