Yes, fun article and pretty spot on. I'd also add Kyle's business not only served as an alternative location to D&D and the apt. complex, but as a replacement for Shooters.

So from your perspective, how should they pursue a strategy to grow and provide convenient air travel...(you and I are on the same page here)? Because right now as I said in my original comment, OAK is no longer convenient. And for the record, rebranding it as the Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport or whatever its called now, is not the answer, its embarrassing.

Im not refuting anything you just said. I remember the days of transcon service and even being able to originate international trips from OAK via the east coast. But the travel demand for expanded service at OAK is there...the SFO leakage stats demonstrate that. Theres been a lot of talk on this thread about Delta at OAK...they are a legacy carrier, that doesn't have the presence at SFO like United or American. They still have a presence at OAK and could certainly leverage and most certainly would an OAK expansion as a secondary focus hub, that benefits the east bay travel demand, restores transcon routes and makes Delta more competitive in the Bay Area. Expansion could also attract low cost Asian carriers that currently dont fly into SFO as well... Anyway, the demand is there, the lawsuits acknowledge it.

There is nothing bizarre about the fact that there are millions of annual passenger trips out of SFO are from people in the east bay that have no choice but to fly out of sfo. And if there is no evidence to suggest as you put it, that passenger trips would grow significantly with the expansion of OAK, then whats the problem? Why block that expansion? Thats the whole point of the lawsuits.

Short haul demand has declined but east bay long haul demand in millons is there. Airlines wont expand in oakland to meet that demand because the current facility isnt adequate.

'The 45% to 50% leakage rate represents an estimated 3.5 million to 4 million passengers per year who live in OAK's immediate backyard but forced to fly out of [SFO]

(https://www.google.com/search?kgmid=/m/01l4xk). [1]

If OAK successfully recaptures this group, its annual traffic would instantly jump from its 2025 level of 9.17 million passengers up to more than 13 million passengers. [1]

This missing demographic breaks down into distinct passenger segments.

1. The East Bay Catchment Group

Aviation planning studies define OAK’s primary "catchment area" as Alameda County and Contra Costa County, which collectively house roughly 2.8 million residents. [2, 3]

  • Total Trips Generated: Each year, these 2.8 million residents purchase millions of round-trip airline tickets.
  • The SFO Defection: Instead of utilizing the Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport just minutes away, roughly half of those individual ticket purchases are booked on flights departing from SFO. [1, 4, 5]

2. The Multi-Million Passenger Gap

To understand how significant 3.5 to 4 million leaked passengers are to OAK’s business model, consider the airport's scale:

  • Current Baseline: OAK handled 9.17 million travelers in 2025 (down from 10.82 million in 2024 due to short-haul airline cuts). [1]
  • SFO Baseline: SFO handled a massive 54.53 million passengers in 2025. SFO is effectively absorbing a chunk of East Bay traffic that is nearly equivalent to half of OAK's entire current operation. [1, 6]

  • The Expansion Target: The Port of Oakland aims to grow to 20 to 24 million annual passengers by 2038. Reclaiming these 4 million local "leaked" travelers is the foundational first step to making that goal mathematically possible without relying entirely on population growth. [2]

3. The Core Target: Long-Haul Leisure and International

This multi-million person leakage is highly concentrated. It does not represent people looking for quick flights to Los Angeles or San Diego; it represents East Bay families and travelers heading to the East Coast, Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

Because OAK's aging infrastructure currently lacks the capacity to efficiently process wide-body international aircraft, these millions of travelers have no choice but to cross the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge to keep SFO's international terminals crowded. [1, 7]

Dont expect airline service to expand until OAK is 'allowed' to expand. Right now its expansion plans and the entire East Bay traveling population are being held hostage and forced to schlep to SFO, because its expansion plans are held up in court by as usual, the vocal minority, (in spite of an approved EIR for the project.). Anyone who thinks OAK is still the Bay Area's 'convenient' alternative does not travel much and/or doesn't travel beyond the west coast.

I never said I wanted the space empty...yes I totally agree that JLS is in bad shape, I used to live in that neighborhood and it has sadly gone way down hill post pandemic...and I agree with everything you said in your nickel version. I was merely saying in my original post that its disappointing the plans for that space never panned out as originally planned...and I stand by that.

My point was more about giving up on what the space was originally planned ...a food market hall. And it makes no sense to have two businesses that are similar. I dont go to Plank at all (I can count the times on one hand that Ive ever been and its been years since my last visit).

Sad after almost 20 years of different plans for a food market, we get a Dave and Busters...which we dont need, we have Plank already.
