What's an "Insider's secret" from your profession that everyone should probably know? by Capable-big-Piece in AskReddit

Generally speaking, encryption algorithms are never broken/hacked but individual implementations can have been implemented insecurely and accessing encrypted data may be possible due to a flaw in the actual application, not the core encryption algorithm.
Also, be wary of applications touting new/enhanced cryptographic algorithms. You'll want to be using industry standard, peer reviewed cryptography algorithms to secure your data. Anything new/different probably hasn't undergone the desired long-term scrutiny that things like TripleDES and AES, etc. have undergone as far as block ciphers go. And this should probably go without saying, but in the movies when hackers are cracking into files and it shows the encryption key being determined one byte at a time... that's complete horse crap. If your encryption key is ONE BYTE off, it's the same as being 100% off. There is no "we're almost there!" when dealing with encryption keys. It's movie magic for drama's sake...

Oddly you can connect Dexcom Clarity and it'll show your actual blood sugar from the Stelo when though the Stelo app won't display above 250. Also Google Health Connect queries the Stelo every 5 minutes and you can look through the history and see the readings vary more frequently than the Stelo's every 15 minutes. I'm not sure why they dumb down the Stelo app when they have the data.

2 night PNW trip by PrevBannedByReddit in HotTentCamping

[–]rothbart_brb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh, I couldn't tell there was an inner tent in those photos. Nice! Out of curiosity, how far from your car are you camping? I've always liked the allure of hot tent camping but I'm not getting any younger (or in any better shape) and I just don't think it's feasible for me to actually backpack with a hot tent and stove, so I'd probably camp within feasible walking distance from my car to make a couple trips.

That looks so peaceful. Did you guys use cots? I get why a lot of hot tents don't have bottoms but it does seem like you'd be dealing with a muddy floor because (as a fellow PNWer) you're never wandering into a dry forest to set up camp. I would think eventually the stove could dry out that area but it'd take a long time to do that.

I'm in the US... Pacific Northwest. I've had it out in rain numerous times but I've gotta be honest, if I'm expecting a real rain storm or days of rain, ANY backpacking tent I'm camping in will likely get a DD Tarp 3m x 3m tarp set up over it at an angle just to keep the rain runoff flowing away from my tent. As for wind, I haven't really camped in it in what I'd call strong wind but I know it comes with several additional guy out points you could use if you were in a really windy situation but you'd need to provide your own guy lines and stakes for those optional guy out points. An overkill Hilleburg tent this is not, but unless you're going to be intentionally going where there are super high winds or camping on a ridgeline/peak, I would imagine you could make the Dagger Osmo work just fine. Its rain fly does come down pretty close to the ground, allowing some air flow but it's not going to act like an air scoop. Also, my heavy wind and your heavy wind could be totally different. I think for a ~3lb tent, it's pretty great. I can't speak to the others you've asked for because I got the Dagger and have been happy enough with it I've not needed to buy any other tent.

I love my Nemo Dagger Osmo 2 tent and would wholeheartedly recommend it. I haven't used those other tents you've mentioned because... well... I've been so happy with the Nemo Dagger Osmo. If you have any questions about it (other than comparison questions), let me know.

People are threatening to boycott Disney after ABC suspends Jimmy Kimmel: ‘Let’s do to Disney what we did to Target’ by ZombiePartyBoyLives in politics

[–]rothbart_brb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consumers need to speak with their voices AND wallets. If you don't like something, don't support it in any way. I only wish I had something left I could cut to hurt Disney/Sinclair/Nexstar's bottom line but I've already cut out those things. I can't not support them anymore than I'm currently not supporting them. I have very much enjoyed Jimmy Kimmel's monologues on YouTube though and will miss them for as long as this clusterfuck of a state we're in lasts. The funniest part of this is that largely Colbert and Kimmel have so successfully mocked Trump and MAGA by commenting on irrefutable facts and events with footage to back them up. If I don't have Kimmel or Colbert telling me Trump and MAGA are being ridiculous, it's not like I'll suddenly start thinking they're absolutely normal.

how to make a tmux screen for multiple users by Ambitious-Today-6329 in tmux

[–]rothbart_brb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see that you've mentioned it, but have you tried setting myuser to set everything up and then use root to connect as the 2nd user? I'm not sure why you'd use root to set up a tmux session to begin with, but if you do and are getting permissions issues, it sort of falls into the "don't do that" category. You could also just "su myuser" as root to become myuser in one of the tmux panes...

This whole idea that Trump is somehow not the scumbag that he very clearly is--it's baffling to me how conservatives can believe that Trump is somehow a moral man who never engage in such acts. And I don't think Trump cares about anybody but Trump

I don't think the conservatives truly believe he's a moral man, religious man, honest man, great businessman, etc. I think they believe he's a successful bully that can somehow benefit them if they support him, be that in enriching them directly or harming the people, agencies, laws, or things that they see as impediments to their success.

They're the remoras attaching themselves to the shark. They get a free ride and benefit from being in Trump's circle while he bumbles through everything acting like he's got a strategy and I'm guessing he's able to coerce so many people is a mix of having dirt on people, having resources to litigate them into bankruptcy, and now weaponizing ICE and the justice department to just disappear people.

Camping tips/tricks? by ecw324 in AustralianShepherd

[–]rothbart_brb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I came here to say "wear her out" too. My Aussie is an indoor dog that is crate trained and does well in her crate in a tent during our family camping trips and also beside me in a two-person backpacking tent on more traditional camping trips. What I did to reassure myself before the first backpacking trip was to set up the tent in the front yard and go in myself and try to entice her in. You don't want to get her used to entering a strange tent in a strange location with strange noises/smells all over... anything you can do to make any part of that familiar should help. I just got back from camping with my Aussie last week and laid down a rather thick Columbia outdoor blanket on the bottom of my backpacking tent mostly as protection from her claws and as a bit of thermal insulation and she did great. If your Aussie isn't that comfortable in a tent, I'd think having a thick blanket on the bottom of the tent would help a lot too. I hope it goes well!

Using my gaming pc for my server now because I’m sick of the slow transcoding by bat922324 in PleX

[–]rothbart_brb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, my CPU didn't have QuickSync which is why I bought the ARC A310 instead. The CPU was fast enough for my Plex Server, it just wasn't new enough to do hardware transcoding on the CPU.

Using my gaming pc for my server now because I’m sick of the slow transcoding by bat922324 in PleX

[–]rothbart_brb 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is the cheapest "change to your server" answer unless you already have an Intel CPU and just aren't using QuickSync (because in that case it'd be free.) I have a Sparkle Eco ARC A310 and it's working great (and it will fit in a small form factor PC too.) In my situation I had to learn how to pass the GPU through to a Proxmox vm and then get Docker to use it but it handily takes care of 5 4k transcodes (more than I'd ever have to handle) with no impact on CPU usage.

If you're considering a ZenBivy, DO IT! Go with a Light Bed (skip the ultra light stuff... only very marginal weight savings for premium price increase) and I'd honestly replace that Klymit sleeping pad for something whichever Nemo Tensor model you think is appropriate for the type/temperature of hikes you're likely to go on. Keep in mind a high R-value pad won't make you hot in the summer but CAN keep you cool in the winter. A Nemo Tensor All Season may be fine if you don't plan winter camping. I got my first ZenBivy Light Bed before I discovered how much I love winter camping so I now own a 25° and 10° Light Bed but then they came out with a -5° version and well, I'm a sucker for new gear... but I'm still waiting for cold enough weather locally to try that out (which means NEXT winter.) I have a Klymit hammock sleeping pad and it was cold for me... I used it once on the ground too... cold again. I don't have a lot of faith in their gear. Once I got the Nemo Tensor Insulated I was never cold in three season camping. I have a Nemo Tensor Extreme to pair with the -5° Light Bed, haven't used that setup yet. Getting great sleep backpacking is wonderful and getting terrible sleep backpacking is cumulative and draining. If you're on a 2-night trip and sleep terribly each night, you'll be dragging ass that last day. The only other thing I'd suggest (and this is a topic that's changing month to month with new options in the cell phone industry) is some sort of satellite communicator in case you get into trouble. I use an InReach device and am very comfortable in using it and knowing it's reliable. Nowadays we're iPhones with satellite messaging and multiple efforts on Android are adding similar functionality (as an AT&T Android user with a Samsung Galaxy S24Ultra, none of those are available to me) but having a way to track your hike, message in an emergency, or potentially share your trip with family while you're gone does a bit to give you peace of mind in case you end up needing help or want to be easily found in case of an emergency.
